'Halloweentown' Isn't Just A Classic Disney Movie -- It's A Real Place You Should Visit
Huffington Post - 5 months
Come October, everyone starts squealing about how utterly obsessed they are with Halloween. But we assure you, no one is as dedicated to the spooky holiday as the quaint town of St. Helens, Oregon.  The riverside city was used as the backdrop for Disney’s “Halloweentown” ― the iconic 1998 kids flick about a young witch who, with the help of her grandmother, saves a town of ghouls, ghosts and goblins who all live together in harmony. The people of St. Helens decided that the supernatural town didn’t have to end with the 90s. Now, the townspeople come together every October to transform St. Helens back into the magical place it was for the film. Visit St. Helens throughout October to participate in their month-long festival, “Spirit of Halloweentown.” Activities include haunted houses, town-wide tours, pumpkin carving contests and a meet-and-greet with actress Kimberly Brown, who played Marnie, the central witch of the 1998 film. The small town is less tha ...

Uganda's women, girls seek justice to halt sexual violence: rights group
Yahoo News - almost 2 years
By Kieran Guilbert LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Tackling an "epidemic" of sexual violence in Uganda, in which disabled women and girls are most vulnerable to abuse, and seeking justice for the victims are at the heart of a campaign launched by the rights group Equality Now on Thursday. The #JusticeForGirls initiative will enable women and girls who suffer sexual violence to pursue justice through local channels, avoiding the slow, complex and expensive process of taking a case to court, Equality Now said. Victims have a "bleak prospect of accessing justice for such atrocious crimes", said the group's legal consultant, Kimberly Brown. "Unprofessional conduct and corruption are rampant at various levels [in the justice system], as is a lack of sensitive and appropriate treatment of people with disabilities who report crimes performed against them," Brown said.

Mother And Daughter Fight Over Frisbee Attack
Huffington Post Sports - about 4 years
There's an old saying that the family that plays together stays together, but, apparently, the Brown family of Fort Mill, S.C., didn't get the memo -- at least before they started playing Frisbee. Officers were called to the Brown house shortly after midnight on Dec. 29 in reference to an argument between a mother and daughter, the Charlotte Observer reported. When officers arrived, they heard Kimberly Brown, 23, shouting profanities at her mother, Latina Brown, 39, and smelled an odor that suggested the presence of alcoholic beverages, according to the police report. Kimberly Brown told the responding officer that the two were playing Frisbee in the house when her mother struck her in the face with the toy. Latina Brown told a slightly different story, saying that her daughter became angry because she was having trouble catching the Frisbee, the report stated. Latina also told the officer that when her daughter became "loud and boisterous," she became concerned t ...
