Penny C. Sansevieri: Self-Publishing Stigma: Because Revolutions Take Time
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Sometimes great ideas and trends start with a wave so big, they are hard to ignore. For others they begin almost unnoticed and go by for years, virtually undetected until suddenly they are not only part of our lives, but part of our culture. Back in 1999 I saw an article, a tiny piece in The New York Times about a company called Fat Brain out of Campbell, California. The article talked about their digital publishing, at the time referred to as Print-on-Demand, printing books as they are needed. I was just noodling with the idea of starting my own company back then, an idea which didn't fully come into being until 2000. But the article intrigued me. If books could be printed one at a time, instead of in lots of several thousand, what could this do for publishing? At some point, Fat Brain was folded into iUniverse.com and so, the revolution was born. It was still a whisper at the time, not many were really talking about it but I remember watching with rabid anticipation. A p ...

Kris Nielsen: I (Used to) Love Teaching
Education Week - over 4 years
Guest post by Kris Nielsen. This post was originally published here on his blog, Middle Grades Mastery. A modified version was sent to President Obama. I love teaching. Or, I did love teaching. I loved teaching when my job was to teach. Now, I don't love teaching, because my job is no longer teaching. Was that introduction awkward enough? That's kind of how my job feels: awkward, frustrating, backwards, stifling, and redundant. Breaking away from the comparison to the introduction, I'd like to add demeaning, thankless, exhausting, fruitless, unappreciated, lonely, undemocratic, unfulfilling, and major energy drain. But, please, let me explain my whining. I'm not generally a whiner, so I feel that when I do moan and complain, I should have some good reasons, and maybe even some solutions. (Before you get your hopes up, I'm not going to offer any solutions. I've tried that; it's pointless.) I look back and I believe that my entry into the world of teaching had th ...

Hit Parade continues for AB JV Softball
Acton Patch - almost 5 years
Acton Boxborough’s JV Softball team continued the hitting barrage on Wednesday against Bedford rolling to a 20 – 8 victory.  Kristina Nelson keyed the attack with two doubles in the early innings that established a lead for AB that they would not relinquish.  Alli Sedler stayed hot with another triple as did Julie Cotillo with her own triple.  AB put the game away in the 6th when Olga Bolberova started a rally by working a walk after being down 1-2 in the count.  That was followed by a sharply stroked single down the third base line from Noelle Roth.   After Julia Holt laid down a perfect bunt to advance the runners, Isabelle Smokelin brought home a run with a shot to short.  Pitcher Anna Meusel helped her own cause with an opposite field double plating 2 more runs.  Theresa Doolittle, who stung the ball all afternoon, added a single after being robbed of two sure base hits earlier. AB’s defense never stopped hustling in the chilly weather limiting the Bedford base runners to sta ...
