Tres Brooklyn: Jean-Paul Gaultier at the Brooklyn Museum and Tres Chic: Grace Kelly Celebrated
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Only some of the crowd greeting French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier at the Brooklyn Museum, wore his clothes, easily identified by the tab on the back. But many chose the occasion of the opening of a lavish exhibition, "The Fashion World of Jean-Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk," to pay tribute, riffing on his most camp and louche looks without actually wearing HIS designs. That's to be expected for the man who gave Madonna the pointy cone bra! But upstairs on the museum's fifth floor, rooms fitted with mannequins whose facial expressions move in delight or dismay display his art in a spectacular show to rival the splendid Alexander McQueen at the Metropolitan Museum a few seasons back. Featuring a full sampling of his career, from his nautical stripes to beaded bustiers, lace gowns to tartan trenchcoats, gartered corsets and an outré glamour, the exhibition illustrates the line between what is beautiful and what can actually be worn. The exhibition catalogue, with image ...

After Rudy, Before Bloomberg: Looking Back on a Mayoral Legacy
Dallas Observer Blogs - over 3 years
Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani alongside outgoing New York mayor Michael Bloomberg. (David Handschuh/New York Daily News/POOL) Finding an unpublished George Gurley piece is like opening a perfectly written time capsule. In May 2001, New York City was preparing to say farewell to a term-limited Rudy Giuliani and welcome anyone from Mark Green to Freddy Ferrer to Michael Bloomberg as its first new leader in eight years. An intrepid young Observer reporter named George Gurley hit the party scene to ask prominent New Yorkers what they thought would happen to the city. He wrote it up and then ... it disappeared. The Observer never published Mr. Gurley's observations, captured first at the annual benefit for the African Rainforest Conservancy, held at The Park on 17th and Tenth Avenue and the second was for the 10th anniversary of the Paramount Hotel.  Twelve years later, as we approach another change of guard at City Hall, Mr. Gurley got to thinking about that piece. Who Wants A 'Good Wife' Spinoff?
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Carrie Preston will likely be back for "The Good Wife" Season 5 ... but what about a spinoff? After every appearance she makes on "The Good Wife," fans start the Elsbeth spinoff chatter. Preston's character Elsbeth Tascioni, a flighty lawyer who operates in her own little world, has become a fan-favorite guest star on the CBS drama. "There have been quite a lot of suggestions for an Elsbeth spinoff," Preston told EW. "Some of them involve [Kyle MacLachlan's character]; some of them involve Michael J. Fox’s character; some of them involve Martha Plimpton’s character. I take that as a big compliment. I am very flattered by that. My Twitter feed often lights up with Elsbeth spinoff suggestions, and I would certainly not be opposed to something like that. I just love playing the character, and it is really exciting that she has struck some kind of nerve in people that makes them want to see more of her." In February 2013, Preston told The Huffington Post nobody was offici ...

Liat Kornowski: The Captain Returns And Lily Gets A New Gig In 'HIMYM'
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Note: Do not read on if you have not yet seen Season 8, Episode 17 of CBS "How I Met Your Mother" titled "The Ashtray." Much like Robin's repeated flash-forward last week (Mrs. Doubtfire turned into Mike Tyson, just to jog your memory), this episode's core sequence was a repeated memory. Granted, last week Robin added key details with each new story and this week we saw the same incident through three different sets of eyes, but come on, "HIMYM" writers, switch up your act. We have a whole new season ahead of us. The premise: The Captain (Kyle MacLachlan) is back, as promised, and leaves a message on Ted's archaic answering machine to call him back at his earliest convenience. Ted, freaked out, recounts the story of the last time he saw The Captain, a year and a half earlier, a few weeks after he broke up with Zoey (watch out for Ted and Barney's hilarious Garth and Kat-like storytelling). It was at a gallery opening Lily had dragged Ted and Robin to, which Barney ins ...

Portland as Fuck
The Portland Mercury - over 4 years
Portlandia: You know... it could be better! by Ian Karmel THERE SEEM to be three opinions about the television show Portlandia: (1) "It's pretty funny, I like it." (2) "It's the worst. I named my dog Sleater-Kinney because of it, and I HATE MY DOG." And (3) "I'm not familiar with Portlandia." Count me among the first group. Portlandia isn't perfect, but writing sketches is hard, and they knock out some banging sketches. Sometimes it generalizes Portland in ugly ways, but they're just trying to be funny. I would have to say my one criticism of the show is that they don't have a native Portlandian on the writing staff... well, I'm here to offer my services. Here's a list of sketch ideas that I think would go over great on the program. • A graphic designer makes a fixed-gear bicycle out of pork belly. Portland vibrates violently and dematerializes. • A local white becomes flummoxed. • A radio disc jockey tries to sneak his own mandolin ...

Twin Piques: Everything's Coming Up Lynch
The Portland Mercury - over 4 years
I know shit-all about Lana Del Rey, but when Kayla says I should be impressed with her, I'm impressed with her. Then Lana goes and stars in this David Lynch-arific H&M ad, and I find myself loving this lovely. Off-the-cuff notes: * Lana Del Rey's nom de chanteuse seems like it might be a reference to the Mulholland Drive-mesmerizing Rebekah Del Rio. * There seems to be references to Lynch's Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, Inland Empire, and surprisingly no reference to Wild at Heart in this H&M ad. * Why does everyone have the buttercream-fondant skin of a kewpie doll in this ad and this campaign from Urban Outfitters? Del Rey, along with nearly every young beautiful creature out there (and the businesses who sell to them), is tits-over-teakettle in love with all things David Lynch lately. Twin Peaks references, a Lynch appearance on Louie, theme nights at Holocene, Netflix queues... oh, the list is lengthy. I'm loving it, personally. There's been s ...
