abc Newspapers - over 4 years
When supplemental teachers Karla Dahlheimer, Dorris Northup and Patty Sorenson launched the Hamilton Elementary Traveling Library in June, they hoped about 20 students would come to the three locations in Coon Rapids they planned. Teachers Karla Dahlheimer, Dorris Northup, Jana Woody and Patty Sorenson took part in the first-ever “Hamilton Traveling Library” this summer. It was a success and organizers hope to expand on the program next summer. To their surprise and delight, more than 60 students attended the traveling library’s first day in June; turnout at the July and August events was about the same. The women decided to do the traveling library after discussing how they could build community with students and give them fun experiences during the summer. A decision was made to take the traveling library into the community and events were held at Winchester and Pondale apartments and Creekside Trailer Park once in June, July and August at each location. SPEAK OUT: What's Your Favorite Woody Guthrie Song?
Bowie Patch - over 4 years
Woody Guthrie was born on July 14, 1912, and throughout his lifetime, he traveled around the country performing traditional folk and blues. His songs provided inspiration for the folk movement, and several modern-day artists have cited Guthrie's music as an influence for their own. Many of Guthrie's lyrics reflected his experiences in the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. His song "This Land Is Your Land" is one of his most famous, and if your family was anything like mine, it's one you probably grew up singing along to.  To celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birthday, we want to know: What was your favorite Woody Guthrie song? Tell us in the comments. And check out the "This Land is Your Land: Woody Guthrie at 100" tribute concert being held in honor of his 100th birthday at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, in October.

Secret Sex – A Book Alive Online: Chapter 34 – Vows
eNews Channels - over 4 years
eNewsChannels BOOK SERIAL: “Secret Sex, A Book Alive Online,” written and lived by John Scott G. Chapter 34 – “Vows.” Warning, severe plot twist coming. Here we go: I got married. “WTF?” I hear you saying. Yup, it was a shock to many people. This is probably where we should cue up some eerie and ominous sound effects. Asking my friends to suggest the most disturbing music they’ve ever heard resulted in a number of interesting replies, including “Psycho” by Bernard Herrmann. Also: “Macarena” by Los Del Rio. “The Isle of the Dead” by Sergei Rachmaninoff. “Yummy Yummy Yummy” by Ohio Express Overture to “The Flying Dutchman” by Richard Wagner. Anything by Raffi, Kenny G, or Mannheim Steamroller. “Toccata and Fugue in D minor” by J.S. Bach. Anything by Pat Boone, Michael Bolton, or the Black Eyed Peas. My personal pick might be Olivier Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time,” not only because it was written while the composer was in a concentration camp but also beca ...

What Would You Like to See Here?
Healdsburg Patch - almost 5 years
The Healdsburg Center, formerly the Mitchell Shopping Center, lost a major tenant late last year when The Firefly Trading Co., an outlet store that sold seconds from a range of other retailers, closed its doors. Firefly, which bought its business from the former Healdsburg Outlet, had a 6,580-square-foot space at 449 Center St., inside the popular shopping center which also has a busy CVS pharmacy and a number of other smaller stores, shops and cafés. Dana Wood, one of two leasing agents on the property, said he and co-agent Eric Drew haven't had any takers yet for the Firefly space -- likely because of its large size. "It would be a perfect place for all different kinds of stores," Wood said. "Something like a Trader Joe's would be great." The Firefly vacancy came just a month or two before the closure of the Sears Appliance Showroom at 431 Center St. in the same shopping center. Wood said he has had a few inquiries on the Sears space, likely because, at 3,200 square ...
