Bipolar Comes Out of the Closet
Huffington Post - over 3 years
In Homeland, Claire Danes portrays a brilliant CIA analyst who is determined to prevent another 9-11. Her portrayal of Carrie Mathison, the female protagonist of the cable show, has been lauded with Best Actress awards for two years in a row. Much of the buzz stems from her spot-on depiction of someone with bipolar disorder. For Carrie and many like her, her mood disorder has a genetic component; her father is also bipolar. Her sister Maggie, a physician, is the ground support for both of them. Carrie displays the behavioral changes that are symptomatic for both the mania and depression of bipolar. During her full-blown manic episodes, we see Carrie talking very fast, her thoughts racing. She behaves impulsively, risking everything, even her job. She moves about restlessly and sleeps little. Homeland's co-creator and executive producer Alex Gansa has said, "The interesting thing about bipolar disorder ... is that even at the hypomanic stage, which is a degree below the manic stage, t ...

“Rizzoli & Isles” is losing its showrunner, with Janet Tamaro stepping down from the position after Season 4, according to Variety. “I did four seasons that I’m incredibly proud of, and the show is in great shape,” Tamaro told Variety. “It’s been phenomenal, but I’m at the top of my game creatively and really want to use the juice I have to produce other projects … I do so love writing female characters, and I want to do more!” Tamaro will reportedly remain with the show as a consulting producer for its fifth season. A replacement for her position has yet to be named. Robert David Jaffee: Congresswoman Napolitano Fights the Good Fight for the Mentally Ill
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Former Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr., who may or may not have bipolar disorder, but who definitely committed more than 3,000 illegal financial transactions, was recently sentenced to 30 months in prison for absconding with $750,000 in campaign funds. He has harmed the cause of the mentally ill by reinforcing the stereotype that those with a supposed mental disorder engage in irresponsible and reckless, let alone criminal, behavior. By contrast, Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-Calif.), who makes no claim to suffering from a mental disorder, is a hero to the mentally ill for her stalwart work in devising programs to improve mental health care and reduce violence among children in schools. On Friday, August 23, Congresswoman Napolitano and her mental-health consortium had their quarterly meeting at the Southern California Edison Federal Credit Union in Irwindale, Calif., roughly 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The meeting focused on providing housing for homeless veter ...
