Lost Causes: 16 Great Performances From 2015 That Have No Prayer of Winning an Award
Huffington Post - about 1 year
December has dawned and with it have come the lists. Site & Sound kicked it off with their Best Films (International Division), and then the Independent Spirit nominees followed, and then the National Board of Review, and then, and then, and then. Soon, we will all be comparing notes and arguing and raising or lowering our opinions of friends and colleagues based on how much their opinions coincide with our own. Well, call me old fashioned, but I believe in waiting until the end of the year to write my year-end list. But, fish gotta swim and birds gotta fly, and film bloggers gotta tell you over and over again how great their favorites are til you cry. (That rhymes provided you say it fast enough.) So, as a place holder until December gives way to January, I have compiled a list of 16 stand-out performances from 2015. None of these have a prayer of getting a sniff of an Oscar Nomination. They come from the obscure or the maligned or the generally overlooked and undervalued. In ...

Review: Leland Orser's 'Morning' is moving but uneven
LATimes - over 3 years
In 'Morning,' Leland Orser directs himself and real-life wife Jeanne Tripplehorn as a couple who lose their only child. "Morning" is about mourning. I'm sure the connection is one its author intended.

Junk TV Round-Up: BURN NOTICE, MOB DOCTOR, CRIMINAL MINDS, TRANSPORTER
Boom Tron - over 4 years
All right, you buncha undercooked couch potatoes, limber up your DVR and pretend like you don’t need any friends, it’s time for more junk TV. Sleeper hit Burn Notice has its sixth season premiere tonight, and I’m betting the suits over at the USA Network haven’t been this pleased since they dug Silk Stalkings out of CBS’s garbage.  Series creator Matt Nix had a chat with the good folks over at TVLine and he explains that this will be a very different season.  Which, yes, every series creator says before a premiere, but I think Nix actually means it this time.  As you may (or may not) recall, the end of last season found the sweet(?) and precious(!) Fiona in the slammer after she turned herself in for blowing up the consulate.  This canny move totally threw a monkey wrench in Anson’s plans (Jere Burns, be on every show ever from now on, please and thanks), but now as noted little Fi is in jail.  If anybody knows how to jail, it’s her, but as Nix points out, generally speaking Burn N ...

Add a white pilgrim's bonnet and a long apron, and Ms. Linney is transformed into the nobly suffering Elizabeth Proctor in Arthur Miller's ''Crucible.'' Dress it up

MOVIE REVIEW | 'TAKEN'; Vigilante Daddy Avenges Kidnapping
NYTimes - about 8 years
''Taken'' stars a dour Liam Neeson as a big bad papa bear on the rampaging hunt for his baby cub, a virginal Los Angeles teenager -- the first of many dubious plot points -- who has been snatched while vacationing in Paris by hairy and scary Albanians who put her on the auction block. The movie was produced by the international hitmaker Luc Besson,

In his genre pastiche ''The Good German,'' Steven Soderbergh has tried to resurrect the magic of classical Hollywood, principally by sucking out all the air, energy and pleasure from his own filmmaking. Based on the well-regarded Joseph Kanon novel, this film stars a distracted, emotionally detached George Clooney as Jake Geismer, an American

TV REVIEW; Wrung Out, Strung Out In Bedlam
NYTimes - almost 17 years
To watch ''Wonderland,'' the unsettling series set in a New York psychiatric hospital, is to step into a world of pure chaos. Everyone races, everyone yells, doctors scream instructions, patients scream delusions, somebody dies, someone is saved and at the end a viewer is wrung out. It is a perverse compliment to say that near the end of the first

FILM REVIEW; A Taxi Ride To Torture Provokes A Chase
NYTimes - over 17 years
Since movies keep pushing the envelope of the acceptably gruesome, even the nastiest sights glimpsed in Phillip Noyce's preposterous thriller ''Bone Collector'' should strike jaded moviegoers (those who relished ''Seven,'' for instance) as ho-hum shocks.
