Backstreet Boys Member Opens Up About Substance Abuse

NEW YORK — Nick Carter isn't only writing songs – he's written a book. The Backstreet Boys singer will release a memoir, "Facing the Music and Living to Talk About It," on Sept. 24 via Bird Street Books. The 33-year-old is the first in the group to release a book. The autobiography and self-help book will include stories about Carter's teenage years in the multiplatinum Backstreet Boys, his struggles with substance and alcohol abuse, and the hardships of his family. His younger siblings include Aaron and Leslie Carter. Leslie, who battled with substance abuse, died last year. Carter is engaged to Lauren Kitt. New details have emerged in the "mysterious" death of <a class="fplink fp-172946" href="/leslie+carter+1"><a class="fplink fp-172946" href="/leslie+carter+1">Leslie Carter</a></a>, and it appears the 25-year-old sister of Nick and Aaron Carter died as a result of an overdose. Three prescription drugs found near her body, according to the police report. The report was taken by officials who responded to the 911 call. The three prescription bottles found were Olanzapine, used to treat schizophrenia and/or bipolar disorder, the muscle relaxant Cyclobenzaprine, and the anxiety medication Xanax. Official autopsy results have yet to be released pending toxicology tests, but a source tells E! News that family members believe Leslie overdosed on pills.     On January 31, 2012, aged 25, Carter, who had complained of feeling ill, was found unresponsive at the home of her father, Robert Carter, in Mayville, New York, and was pronounced dead on arrival at Westfield Memorial Hospital in Westfield, New York.
    More Details Hide Details While not attributing a cause of death, a Chautauqua County police incident report and supplemental "Overdose Follow Up" report said Carter, identified by her married name of Leslie B. Ashton, had suffered an overdose and was taking the prescription medications Olanzapine, Cyclobenzaprine (muscle relaxer) and Alprazolam (Xanax). As of February 25, 2012, the cause of death is still under investigation by authorities. Her life was celebrated at a ceremony in Mayville, New York. Many family members attended the funeral, including Aaron Carter, but Nick did not attend because of a family feud. In a September 2013 interview on Dr. Phil, Nick said Leslie's death was the most horrific news he had ever heard. He also said that his family blamed him for her death and he did not attend Leslie's funeral because of their accusations against him. Leslie Carter is buried in Chautauqua Cemetery in Chautauqua, New York.
    Carter also had been spotted with Pop/R&B star Nivea in January 2012 at Capitol Records offices both looking for recording deals.
