Success in Sauce: Former Raider Kenny King Cooks Up Family's Texas Recipe
Huffington Post Sports - about 3 years
There is an old saying that if you give a man a barbecue, you feed him for a single day. But if you teach a man how to barbecue, well, you feed him for the whole summer. Former NFL running back Kenny King hopes that at your next barbecue -- be it during summertime or otherwise -- his King's Q Sauce will be close at hand on the picnic or dinner table. "My King's Q Sauce is a work in progress," says King, 56. Though it comes from an old family recipe, I've been working on it seriously for about a year and a half, and I'm working on developing and marketing the brand. Here in Texas we are into barbecue, and I've got something that is quality and handmade. King's memories of barbecue are interspersed with those of his father, Walter King, a purveyor of fine barbecue, who proudly supplied a never-ending flow of delicious grilling. Barbecue is a passion for me. And it all started with a sauce my dad made years ago, in the small town of 2,000 people, in Clarendon, Texas. What ...

Asomugha retires in Silver and Black
San Francisco Chronicle - about 3 years
Nnamdi Asomugha made the drive Friday from Berkeley to Alameda, just like he did 10 and a half years ago when the Raiders drafted him in the first round. This time, he came to the team facility and officially retired. “It’s the same scenario,” Asomugha said. “I parked my car and walked into the building. And another journey started for me. The cornerback, who was cut by the 49ers earlier this season, officially ended his 11-year career, and was joined on stage in the auditorium by former and current Raiders greats Lester Hayes, Charles Woodson and Willie Brown (left to right, above). “It’s a great feeling putting on the Silver [...]

NFL Investigating Chargers For Cheating
Huffington Post - over 4 years
SAN DIEGO (AP) — If coming off consecutive tough losses wasn't bad enough, the San Diego Chargers will return to work Monday with another distraction. NFL said Sunday it is investigating whether the Chargers used a banned sticky substance during Monday night's loss to the Denver Broncos. If the league determines the Chargers used the substance, they could be fined or lose a draft pick. Fox Sports first reported the investigation on Sunday. "We have been looking into it," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said. The Chargers issued a statement Sunday that said they are "aware of the inquiry and are cooperating fully with the League." During Monday night's game, an equipment manager came onto the field with an illegal substance on hand towels, Fox Sports reported. Line judge Jeff Bergman saw the towels and tried to confiscate the substance. When the equipment manager wouldn't give it up, the o ...

10 of the worst sports nicknames ever
guyism - almost 5 years
The Sultan of Swat, Joltin’ Joe, The Great One, Broadway Joe, Magic. Those are just some of the famous sports nicknames which have become iconic not only among sports fans but within all of pop culture. Sadly, however, our propensity to bestow memorable nicknames on our sports heroes doesn’t end with the iconic. No, it seems like we just can’t help but to slap a nickname on anyone who throws on a uniform. Sometimes, this leads to the utterly ridiculous, the inane and even the occasionally offensive. And it is these horrible, godforsaken nicknames which we celebrate (okay fine, mercilessly make fun of) here today. So, without further ado, here are 10 of the worst sports nicknames of all time. 10 The Athlete: Anthony McFarland The Nickname: Booger Unless you’re an iconic nose-picking movie character from an ‘80s flick, the nickname Booger isn’t exactly one to be proud of. Especially if you’re a 300 pound defensive lineman. Look, Anthony McFarland may have been an elite athle ...

Drug Smugglers Placing Job Ads In Mexican Newspapers
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
SAN DIEGO — The war on drugs is going to the classified sections of Mexican newspapers. Smugglers have long advertised work as security guards, housecleaners and cashiers, telling applicants they must drive company cars to the United States. They aren't told the cars are loaded with drugs. Starting this week, U.S. Immigration and Customs and Enforcement began buying ad space in Tijuana newspapers to warn jobseekers they might be unwitting pawns. "Why don't we do the same thing that (cartels are) doing? It's successful for them. Why wouldn't it be successful for us?" Lester Hayes, a group supervisor for ICE in San Diego, recalls his agents telling him. There have been 39 arrests since February 2011 at San Diego's two border crossings tied to the ads for seemingly legitimate jobs, according to ICE, which hadn't seen such significant numbers before. Those arrests have yielded 3,400 pounds of marijuana, 75 pounds of cocaine and 100 pounds of methamphetamine – ...
