California City Makes Landmark Move For Former Inmates On Job Hunt
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Officials in Richmond, Calif., have approved an ordinance that forbids employers from requiring applicants to reveal their criminal histories at any point during the application or hiring process. In a 6-1 vote, the City Council approved last Tuesday one of the nation's most comprehensive "ban-the-box" ordinances, a reference to the criminal history box on job applications. The ordinance will take affect in September. While similar legislation has been passed in dozens of municipalities across the country, the Richmond ordinance takes it a step further by not requiring applicants to disclose criminal histories at any point, including during the final rounds of interviews or after they're hired. "We've really taken it up a notch," Councilwoman Jovanka Beckles, who introduced the ordinance, told The Huffington Post. "By introducing one of the most comprehensive plans in the country, our hope is to reduce unemployment in Richmond, reduce recidivism in Richmond and give ...

Toshio Meronek: Want Real Safety? Try Jobs and Housing. "Ban the Box" 2.0
Huffington Post - over 4 years
In 2004, San Francisco banned the question "Have you ever been convicted by a court?" and its accompanying check box from government job applications. Since then, so have seven states and dozens of cities and counties. Now, a growing number of formerly incarcerated people, activists and supporters at City Hall are pushing for an expansion of these "Ban the Box" policies. If they succeed, ours will be the first U.S. city where the ban would also apply to private business hiring practices, government vendors, as well as housing applications. Studies from the Department of Justice Statistics and plenty of universities and nonprofits show that if you give someone with a record a better chance at finding housing and above-ground work, the chances that that person will stay out of prison go way up. Should these new Ban the Box policies be enacted, it'll be a huge step toward slowing the revolving door that is Corrections in California -- a system that overwhelmingly targets people ...

Jay Weston: NOBU MALIBU May Be Hottest, Most Exciting New Restaurant in Nation!
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Entrance to new Nobu Malibu - Note the two gorgeous Ferraris parked there. What would induce a world-famous chef to close his small but very successful restaurant at the height of a busy summer season to reopen at another location two miles away? Obviously a new and much larger space which offered better opportunities to feed a larger and even more eager crowd of aspiring diners. Which is exactly what happened this summer when Chef Nobu Matsuhisa closed his tiny, jammed venue in the Malibu village mall after 13 years to open at a beautiful, new self-standing building right on the ocean at 22706 Pacific Coast Highway (310-317-9140), valet parking $8, at Carbon Beach south of the Malibu pier. (The Beverly Hills Chinese restaurant, Mr. Chow, has taken the original space in the village mall and will be opening there shortly, also certain to be a hot, hot place.) A collateral question is whatever precipitated Oracle software billionaire Larry Ellison to buy 10 residential lot ...

Liz Smith: 'Anger Management'--Charlie Sheen's Second Act (Oh, And He's The Shark In 'Jaws' too)
Huffington Post - over 4 years
"If 'Anger Management' wins an audience...it'll most likely be due not to the quality of the show but to the immense appeal and charm of Charlie Sheen on the small screen," writes Erik Hedegaard in Rolling Stone. (The show bows on June 28 on Fox.) This is the article, titled "Still Crazy After All These Years" that reports on a week "on the edge with Hollywood's last wild man." It is just full of fascinating details and concludes that Charlie, after his recent public acting out, "has never gotten a conventional grip on his personal life." Did you know that Charlie Sheen has a contract with FX that says anytime the actor steps out in public, his gold upper left tooth must be camouflaged with paint to cover the gold? On his refrigerator door are photos of his children, along with bagged mementos -- a cigar half smoked by football star Ray Lewis, an empty cigarette pack from Sean Penn, a Sharpie that Russell Brand used to sign autographs. On his walls, baseball collectib ...

Girl Scouts Work Annual "April Showers"
Eureka-Wildwood Patch - almost 5 years
Area Girl Scouts were expecting April showers on Saturday when they handed out paper raindrops regarding personal care items needed for SNAP (formerly known as the Food Stamp Program), but instead they had blue skies for their annual "April Showers" event. April Showers is a long-time Girl Scouts annual drive for personal care products, such as toothpaste, soap and shampoo, which cannot be purchased with SNAP benefits. Nearly 50,000 people in eastern Missouri have no cash income and rely on SNAP benefits only, according to Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri materials. Traditionally, Girl Scouts on one Saturday in April place bags at local residences and then return the next Saturday to pick up donations. See announcement posted by Patch reader Lauren Smith:  Help set a Guinness World Record with April Showers 2012 This year's Girl Scouts hope to set a Guinness World Record by collecting more than 1 million personal care items in honor of the organization's centennial.
