What's Working: All the News <s>That's Fit to Print</s>
Huffington Post - about 2 years
There's an old saying in the news business, one that's guided editorial thinking for decades: "If it bleeds, it leads." That is, stories of violence, tragedy, dysfunction and corruption get top billing -- at the top of the hour, at the top of the computer or phone screen or above the newspaper fold -- driven by the assumption that these are the stories the public will be most drawn to watch or read. This ethos is wrong, both factually and ethically. And it's lousy journalism. As journalists, our job is to give our audience an accurate picture -- and that means the full picture -- of what's going on in the world. Just showing tragedy, violence, mayhem -- focusing on what's broken and what's not working -- misses too much of what is happening all around us. What about how people are responding to these challenges, how they're coming together, even in the midst of violence, poverty and loss? And what about all the other stories of innovation, creativity, ingenuity, compassion and grace? ...

Winter Storm Causes Massive Gridlock, Strands Commuters And Students In The South
Huffington Post - about 3 years
ATLANTA (AP) — Students spent the night on buses or at schools, commuters abandoned their cars or idled in them all night and the highways-turned-parking lots iced over when a winter storm slammed the city, creating a treacherous traffic jam that lasted into Wednesday. It wasn't clear exactly how many people were still stranded on the roads, a day after the storm hit the Deep South on Tuesday, paralyzing the region. And the timing of when things would clear and the highways would thaw was also uncertain because temperatures were not expected to be above freezing for very long. Authorities worked to get food, water, gas and blankets to people still stranded in their cars and National Guard vehicles and police were to escort home the thousands of children who were still at schools. Hundreds of children spent the night on school buses, officials said. The rare snowstorm deposited mere inches of snow, but the South saw fatal crashes and more than 1,000 fender-benders. At least six pe ...

Tracey Harnish: Made in LA: Like Too Many Fabulous Hors d'oeuvres
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Cayetano Ferrer. Quarter-Scale Grand Entrance, 2012. Made in L.A.Installation view at Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, Barnsdall Park, Los Angeles, June 2, 2012-September 2, 2012. Photo by Brian Forrest. LA has a strange relationship with its arts institutions. Artists and critics are quick to bash the few museums it has; witness the razing local critics and artists have given MOCA over the last several months. Never mind that wonderful exhibitions like Amanda Ross-Ho: Teeny Tiny Woman run for a three-month period, it's the one night party bash that advertised Drew Barrymore as featured artist, that had the community sputtering cries that the museum's turn to celebrity was going to be it's downfall. (To be fair, I have just completely over simplified the complex situation at MOCA into two sentences.) The constant slamming of the only Los Angeles contemporary museum can't possibly help it's already dire straits. So it was not really surprising that the day after the ...

Can you go home again? Mother and son reunite after 25-year search across the world
Fox News - over 4 years
Saroo Brierley pulled up to the train station and stepped out of his car into the chaotic landscape that had haunted his dreams. The swerving bicycles, noisy three-wheelers and vendors' pushcarts crowding the streets of this Indian town were half a world from where he lived in Australia's tranquil island state of Tasmania. And yet he knew that once — a lifetime ago — he had called this place home. It was Feb. 12, 2012, and he hadn't been here in nearly 25 years, since that nightmarish day when his brother vanished and a train whisked him away from everything he knew. Since he had ended up an orphan in distant Calcutta, before an Australian couple adopted him and gave him a second chance at family. It took years of searching the Internet before he finally found his way back to this town. After all this time, would his family still be here? If they were, what would they say? What would he say? _____ This is the ...

Ferndale Students Strike a Pose at Prom Fashion Show
Ferndale Patch - almost 5 years
Ferndale High School and the Ferndale Rotary Club hosted a springtime prom fashion show Saturday night. While students worked behind the scenes managing lighting, music and timing of the show, other teens walked the runway modeling the latest trends in high school proms. The fashion show, in the Ferndale High School auditorium, also included popular hairstyles, makeup designs, flowers, jewelry and more. Assistant Principal Lisa Williams said she was impressed with how the students put together the event almost entirely on their own, including seeking donations. Designer Resale Boutique provided the clothes and accessories for the models, flowers and floral arrangements were provided by Blumz by JRDesigns, and hair styling and makeup were provided by Dye Hair Salon. Amy Keely, owner of Designer Resale Boutique, said she was glad to help with the event. "I did this because kids like to run business, as I did as a kid, so this is another way for me to mentor them ...

REVIEW: JLS 4th Dimension Tour, Sheffield Motorpoint Arena
Guardian - almost 5 years
LISA Williams reviews JLS 4th Dimension concert at Sheffield Motorpoint Arena... At the age of 33 and after sitting through both support acts I’d quickly decided I was far too old for the noise of thousands of adoring teenagers screaming out and chanting the names of their favourite band member while eagerly awaiting their presence on stage. How wrong could I be? The foursome made a surprising entrance by being lowered on to the middle stage in the centre of the arena and quickly launched into a number of old favourites as well as songs from the latest album. Surprisingly the harmonies and vocals of these guys were spot even during some of the most daring dance routines. I have to stress the energy of JLS as they leapt from the centre stage and ran through the crowd to the main stage to complete the first of the ‘4 dimensions’ we were promised for the evening. The main concept of the show was based around a video game and as the boys completed each level they collected a diamond ...
