Lorraine Bracco Takes on Aging, One Food at a Time
Yahoo News - almost 2 years
I first met Lorraine Bracco in 1990, when I did her makeup for the cover of Interview magazine. She had been a model for years and acted in French films, but at the time, she was getting noticed for her breakout role in Goodfellas. Lorraine was a kick to be around. She was warm and funny, with a wicked laugh. We’ve been friends ever since.

'Sopranos' Star Michael Imperioli On 'Oldboy' And The Best Thing About James Gandolfini
Huffington Post - over 3 years
The physical features on Michael Imperioli's face change when his former co-star James Gandolfini is brought up. There's certainly no sense that Imperioli doesn't want to talk about Gandolfini -- in fact, he mentioned Gandolfini's name first -- but it's obvious that speaking about the late actor is hard for former friends and colleagues. I was wary to discuss "The Sopranos" at all with Imperioli (who, of course, played mobster Christopher Moltisanti on David Chase's acclaimed show) out of fear that since the subject comes up so many times in his day-to-day life he may just be over it by now. This is not the case. Imperioli's eyes light up as he recounts tale after tale -- including an admission that he wasn't a huge fan of the first script. Imperioli, who I met at his lower Manhattan hotel room, is now co-starring in Spike Lee's "Oldboy." He plays Chucky, a bar owner who helps his childhood friend, Joe (Josh Brolin), on a mysterious quest to find out who has imprisoned Joe for the l ...

The Ultimate All-Star Concert Film: 12-12-12 on Hurricane Sandy's Anniversary
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Who or what could upstage these musicians: Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Michael Stipe, Chris Martin, Eddie Vedder, Roger Waters, The Rolling Stones, Sir Paul McCartney? Maybe a big storm. Aerial shots of the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy are intercut with concert footage in the new documentary 12-12-12. These shots of homes a pile of debris, water coursing through residential neighborhoods like a wild river, houses ablaze, and the people whose lives were upturned, speak volumes. The movie, under Amir Bar Lev's deft direction, makes a big impression. Harvey Weinstein approached him, admiring his work on The Tillman Story, and work began roughly 10 days before the concert. "I hired a bunch of fellow filmmakers I admire here in town and we all fanned out around the Garden and collected material ad hoc," wrote Bar Lev in a recent email. With a focus on helping, as the behind the scenes glimpse illustrates: whatever could go wrong did: including the Internet breakdown ...

James Gandolfini has reportedly died while in Italy, according to Deadline.com. According to the website, the "Sopranos" star was in the country for a film festival. Variety also initially reported that he suffered a fatal stroke, but both the trade site and Deadline.com updated the cause of death to a heart attack. Gandolfini was 51 years old and is survived by a wife and two children. FBI Digging For Body Inside Home Of Late 'Goodfellas' Mobster
Huffington Post - over 3 years
By Murray Weiss and Ben Fractenberg QUEENS — The FBI began digging for a body Monday in the former Queens home of notorious mob power James “Jimmy The Gent” Burke, who was famously portrayed by Robert De Niro in the movie "Goodfellas," sources told DNAinfo New York. FBI Evidence Collection specialists and agents from the Organized Crime Division descended into the basement of Burke’s family home at 81-48 102 Rd. in South Ozone Park around 8 a.m. armed with jackhammers and sledge hammers. Sources said the feds recently obtained information from a new cooperating informant linked to the Gambino and Bonanno crime families who told them he believed a hood who disappeared decades ago was buried in Burke’s basement or backyard. The sources say the dig is not related the fabled 1978 Lufthansa Heist, where Burke, portrayed as Jimmy Conway by De Niro in "Goodfellas," and his fellow wiseguys pulled off an $8 million robbery at JFK, which at the time was the largest robbery in h ...

Justine Hope Blau: Scattered: How My Memoir Went From Proposal to Paperback
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Three weeks ago, on Oct 8th, I opened the box that held the first shipment of my book, Scattered. After nine years, while working full time and raising two kids, I finally had the book in my hands. I was driven to write the story of my childhood -- a life with my beautiful, smart and crazy mother and two older brothers in 23 New York City hotels and apartments. I was determined to make art from that chaos and create a story that would last. Here are most of the places we lived in or stayed at by the time I was 11 years old: The Chesterfield on 49th street, the Taft, the Wellington, the Empire, the Wolcott, the Excelsior, Hotel Pennsylvania, 34th street YMCA, 50th street YMCA, Martha Washington, Allerton, Martinique, Beekman Arms, Broadmoor, Wyndham on 58th street, the shabby hotel on east 86th street, the boarding house in the Bronx, the house of an acquaintance in Pelham, the apartment on West 56th street, apartment on 72nd street and York, one night in the ladies room ...

Penny Marshall: 'Well, Don't You Want To Have Fun?'
Popeater - over 4 years
I meet actress and director Penny Marshall in a midtown Manhattan office building, where she is curled up on a sofa, stocking feet tucked beneath her, doing a back-to-back assembly line of media to promote her new memoir, “My Mother Was Nuts.” Heavily made up for the TV interviews, she looks a bit exasperated. “I’ve done [publicity] for movies but then you have a whole cast, you can split it up!” she says. “Here, same questions, over and over…” That’s Marshall –- the straight shooter from the Bronx. Cuts to the chase, says just what she’s thinking, no glossy airs; what you see is what you get, and that’s a big part of her charm. It’s also how she tells her hilarious and painful life story. Marshall grew up performing in her mother’s dance studio, whose students appeared everywhere -- “shipyards, charity events, telethons,” and national television. Marshall notes that while most people think her family is Jewish, her brother was christened Episcopalian; her sister Ronny ...

Jon Chattman: A Brief Chatt: Brooklyn's own Tony Sirico Talks "Law" and Sopranos
Huffington Post - over 4 years
There's no way around it: Tony Sirico is always going to be synonymous with his Sopranos character Paulie Walnuts. He's probably fine with that, but the character actor said it's nice to branch out of gangster roles every now and then. Two films he recently finished up find him doing just that. In the comedy Super Athlete, he'll play a high school football coach and in Zarra's Law, he'll be on the other side of the law. "I'm one of the good guys now," he said earlier this month. "I play a retired police detective. That crime drama, which shot in Brooklyn and Staten Island over the past month, tells the story of one brother trying to solve the murder of his younger brother. The film is written and produced by Joseph Scarpinito, who said "like the movie," it was "all about family" on the set. Q. What's the concept of the film you just wrapped up? Why did you sign on? A. Zarra's Law is the story of two brothers on the opposite side of the law. When my character's bro ...
