U.S. economic outlook brightens on upbeat job, inventory data
Yahoo News - 9 months
By Lucia Mutikani WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell last week, pointing to sustained strength in the labor market despite a sharp slowdown in hiring last month. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits declined 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 264,000 for the week ended June 4, the Labor Department said. "The hand-wringing over the May jobs report may be misplaced," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Economic Advisors in Holland, Pennsylvania.  Claims have dropped by 30,000 since surging to 294,000 in early May. They have now been below 300,000, a threshold associated with a strong job market, for 66 straight weeks, the longest streak since 1973.

That means that Betty Hargens and her great-grandson, who lost their home after medical expenses for Hargens’ late husband became too much to bear, don’t have to be separated from their beloved Chihuahua, Chloe. “I adopted her out of a veterinarian's office I worked in, and she is so dear to me,” Hargens told the Statesman Journal. “She means everything to me and my great-grandson.” Previously, Hargens had to wrap Chloe in a blanket and leave her in the car while she and her great-grandson slept inside churches converted into shelters. The new facility, which is has space for six dogs and two cats, is the ninth of its kind by the PetSmart Promise program, a collaboration between PetSmart and Family Promise, a nonprofit organization that serves homeless families. Yahoo News - about 2 years
March, April and May. They found that while the yearly tornado total will climb by 2080, the number of tornadoes will also vary wildly from year to year. "We see this trend in a lot of extreme weather," said lead study author Victor Gensini, a severe storms climatologist at the College of DuPage in Illinois. In the future, tornado season will also peak earlier, in March instead of May, the study reported. Typically, climate models can't predict how global warming will affect tornadoes because the storms are smaller than the resolution of climate models.

French hostages: In cold blood
The Economist - over 3 years
The last journey home OVER the years France has grown painfully accustomed to seeing its countrymen taken hostage abroad. So it was to much relief that on October 29th four French hostages, kidnapped in Niger three years ago while working at a French-owned uranium mine and then held in Mali, were freed and arrived safely home. But the good news was short-lived. Just four days later, two more French citizens, both journalists working for RFI, France’s public world-service radio, were seized in northern Mali by armed gunmen, driven into the desert and shot dead.Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon, whose bodies were repatriated to France this week, were both experienced journalists working on a report in Kidal in northern Mali. They had just finished interviewing a local leader of a secular Tuareg resistance movement, the MNLA. In broad daylight, as the reporters were about to drive off, a sand-coloured pickup truck blocked their way, according to their chauffeur’s testimony. Tuareg-spe ...

Lucy Vallender, UK's First Transgender Muslim Woman, Gets Married After Leaving Territorial Army (PHOTOS)

Lucy Vallender finally feels "true to herself" since getting a sex change and converting to Islam, saying that since the surgery three years ago and the conversion last September, "I felt happy and relieved at last -- the happiest I've ever felt in my life." She's been called the first transgender Muslim in the UK, but she said, "I bet there are more -- they are just frightened." Vallender feels more comfortable in her own skin now more than ever before, but unfortunately some members of her new religious community don't feel the same way. Her local mosque in Swindon, Wiltshire, barred her from praying with the women and asked her many personal and judgmental questions, reports the Daily Mail. "They asked me questions about my bra cup size, asked about my Adam's apple, about my period and asked to see my birth certificate," she said, and so returned home to pray there instead. "I hope people will change their attitudes and other people like me will realize they are free to just be ...

Boko Haram leader calls for more schools attacks after dorm killings
Guardian (UK) - over 3 years
Abubakar Shekau describes western-style education as a 'plot against Islam', as two-pronged strategy delivers young recruits The leader of Nigeria's Islamist militant group Boko Haram has called for more attacks against schools, describing western education as a "plot against Islam", in a video released days after his fighters killed 46 students in an assault on a dorm. In the 15-minute recording released at the weekend, Abubakar Shekau said schools would continue to be targeted "until our last breath". "Teachers who teach western education? We will kill them! We will kill them in front of their students, and tell the students to henceforth study the Qur'an," he said, gesticulating energetically while dressed in military fatigues and a traditional hat. Shekau denied that his fighters killed children. "Our religion does not permit us to touch small children and women, we don't kill children," he said, reading from sheets of paper as he cradled a Kalashnikov. He also dismissed talk ...

US wholesale prices rise 0.5 percent in May
Fox News - over 3 years
A rise in food and gas costs drove a measure of wholesale prices in May. But outside those volatile categories, inflation was mild. The Labor Department said the producer price index rose 0.5 percent in May from April, nearly offsetting a 0.7 percent decline in April from March. Gas prices rose 1.5 percent last month, and food costs increased 0.6 percent. The index, which measures price changes before they reach the consumer, has increased just 1.7 percent in the 12 months ending in May. That's up from a 0.6 percent year-over-year increase in April, the smallest in 10 months. Core prices, which exclude the food and energy, rose just 0.1 percent in May. They are up 1.7 percent in the past year, below the Federal Reserve's 2 percent inflation target.

WATCH: Man Wrestles, Then Decapitates, 3-Metre Python
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
A family of tourists got more than they bargained for when their tour guide decided to wrestle with a giant snake while out exploring the Florida Everglades. Tommy Owen, a tour guide with Everglades Adventure Tours, was out with a family touring the river when the mother of the group pointed out that a snake, a Burmese python, was swimming in the river alongside their boat. This particular type of snake, according to Owen, isn't native to Florida's ecosystem and poses a threat to the river's birds, reptiles and other wildlife. Owen positioned the boat a safe distance away from the snake to protect the family, reports the Daily Mail, "They don't belong here and that was literally running through my head," said Owen, according to Sky News. Owen then leaped into the river and plunged his arms into the water so he could grab the snake and lift it out of the liquid. What happened next took the 26 year old by surprise. "I didn't even realize it was 10ft," Owen told ...

Dresden Shumaker: The Problem With Princess Culture For Boys
Huffington Post - about 4 years
I grew up the daughter of a feminist. Mom was always involved with local association of women chapters and always made sure I knew that girls could do ANYTHING. I went to an all-girls school for grades 8, 9 and 10. Those were prime years for defining a sense of self. I was surrounded by teachers and staff that were empowering. I never once had a moment in my life where I paused and thought, "I can't ____ because I am a girl." When I found out that I was going to have a son, I was so surprised. A boy? What? Immediately, I had visions of this super-aggressive and dominant child. Isn't that what they are? They are The Man. They are the ones oppressing women. And now I was going to have to parent one. No opportunity to continue the "girl power" culture that I loved so much. But a funny thing happened when I met my son -- I started to realize how destructive girl power can be to boys. Let me be clear -- I absolutely know that there is a need to make sure that girls a ...
