Juror In Oregon Standoff Trial Dismissed Over Bias
Huffington Post - 4 months
PORTLAND, Ore. - A juror in the trial of seven militia members charged with seizing a U.S. wildlife refuge in Oregon earlier this year was dismissed for bias, a federal judge said on Wednesday. Prosecutors and defense attorneys in the case agreed to the dismissal of the juror, who formerly worked for the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM), after U.S. District Judge Anna Brown said the juror would be questioned more closely about comments he may have made about his bias. “It’s a new jury, a new day, a new start,” Brown said. Brown said jury deliberations must start over from scratch. An alternate will step in for the dismissed juror. The attorney for Ammon Bundy, one of the leaders of those charged, asked the court in a motion on Wednesday morning to dismiss the juror in question and order the jury to begin deliberations again or declare a mistrial. One of Bundy’s attorneys, J. Morgan Philpot, said a mistrial would not have been a better alternative, adding he did ...

Jury deliberates in Malheur standoff case, as land use questions linger
Yahoo News - 4 months
Federal prosecutors and defense attorneys wrapped up two days of closing arguments late Wednesday in the trial of six men and one woman charged with conspiracy in the armed takeover and 41-day occupation of a wildlife preserve in rural Oregon earlier this year. As the jury began deliberating Thursday in Portland, residents of the region were left wrestling with the political and economic questions central to the Malheur occupation saga – particularly whether the federal government, which owns a majority of the land in Oregon and other western states, should cede more control of these forests and grazing pastures back to the states. Ammon Bundy, who led the ranchers to occupy the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, was merely protesting what he considered tyrannical federal land-management policies, argued his defense attorney, Marcus Mumford.

Want Some Hangout Clout? My Morning Jacket's Jim James Is the Surreal Deal
Huffington Post - almost 2 years
Is Jim James for real? My Morning Jacket's mysterious frontman/guitarist/vocalist must enjoy keeping people guessing, bouncing from prestigious side projects to occasional solo work to incredible collaborations with the likes of Elvis Costello and Marcus Mumford. The trio joined Rhiannon Giddens (Carolina Chocolate Drops) and Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes) to record Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes, a T Bone Burnett-produced album and Showtime documentary that required the five singer-songwriters to flesh out Bob Dylan's long-lost lyrics into the most intriguing roots-oriented product of the 2014 holiday season. Members of James' actual band have been co-stars, too. Portraying the fictional Ruckus in the Cameron Crowe film Elizabethtown, they burned up the stage in more ways than one with a rendition of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" that was the highlight for many who were otherwise disappointed in the 2005 dramady. Part whimsical, part weirdness, part wonderment, James ...

Huffington Post - over 3 years
Sunday night's "Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating The Music Of 'Inside Llewyn Davis'" concert at Manhattan's Town Hall was one of those only-in-New-York events where a guy in a Mike Piazza t-shirt jersey could breathe the same air as Hollywood luminaries like Susan Sarandon and Paul Rudd. The show, a benefit concert for the National Recording Preservation Foundation, was presented by "Inside Llewyn Davis" directors Joel and Ethan Coen and the film's music supervisor, T Bone Burnett, and featured nearly four hours of performances from singers like Joan Baez, Patti Smith, Jack White, Marcus Mumford and the "Inside Llewyn Davis" cast, Oscar Isaac (who plays the film's title character, a 1960s folk singer) and Carey Mulligan among them. "I'm humbled to have a seat at this table," Isaac said during one of his solo performances. Isaac, an actor who also sings, played "Hang Me, Oh Hang Me" and "Green, Green Rocky Road," two folk songs made famous by Dave Van Ronk, at the concert, and wa ...

Mumford & Sons Pick Up Where Sinatra Left Off
Huffington Post - over 3 years
NEW YORK — Mumford & Sons were in the tennis spirit at the reopening of the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in Queens. The Grammy-winning British rockers performed a sold-out concert Wednesday for 16,000 fans at the stadium's West Side Tennis Club, which hosted the U.S. Open until 1978. Near the end of their set, the foursome played tennis onstage – using a racket at times, and a guitar and banjo at others. They also threw balls to fans in the crowd. Mumford & Sons played the first concert at the 90-year-old stadium, where acts from Jimi Hendrix to the Beatles to the Rolling Stones performed. It was the first show at the historic venue in more than 20 years. Mumford & Sons electrified the crowd – even when it rained lightly – playing the well-known rock hits "Little Lion Man," "I Will Wait" and "The Cave" as well as other songs from their two multiplatinum albums. "Yes, Forest Hills, Queens, New York. We just can't believe you all came. This is amazi ...

Jason Sudeikis, Jason Bateman, Ed Helms and Will Forte aren't in Mumford & Sons, but they play the group in the band's new video for "Hopeless Wanderer." The clip for Mumford & Sons' latest single off the 2012 album "Babel" features the four funnymen as arch versions of Marcus Mumford (Sudeikis), Ted Dwane (Forte), Winston Marshall (Bateman) and Ben Lovett (Helms). It's pretty much perfect, if only for Helms' entire existence (check the photo below for an example). Not that anyone should be surprised to find out that the Nard Dog likes Mumford. More Details Hide Details As stated previously, Mumford began writing the majority of Mumford & Sons' debut album, Sigh No More, in Edinburgh. Critics either love or hate Mumford's lyrical style, some saying it is far too "churchy" and others wondering why so few musicians nowadays write deep, meaningful lyrics like Mumford does. The backlash against the band began as soon as they started gaining attention, with the indie music critics at "Pitchfork" describing the album "Sigh No More" as having "predictable crescendos, there are some unexpected textures, mostly courtesy of some guy calling himself Country Winston playing banjo and dobro. And they contain hints of Celtic melodies in songs like 'Roll Away Your Stone' and 'Thistle & Weeds', like they might be trying to update Fairport Convention and Pentangle. But none of these ideas is fully developed or explored, the gestures fleeting at best."
