Abercrombie Plans Spurring Protests
Huffington Post - over 3 years
CNBC: Plans by Abercrombie & Fitch to open a children's store on London's Savile Row have come under fire again from local tailors determined to keep the historic street free of chain stores. The U.S. fashion retailer had earmarked No. 3 Savile Row - a street which has been associated with bespoke tailoring for two centuries – as a possible site for its first children's store in the U.K. But Mark Henderson, chairman of heritage tailor Gieves & Hawkes, told CNBC that an Abercrombie shop would be out-of-keeping with the rest of the street. "Opening a kids store on Savile Row is a somewhat bizarre thing to do. It's a fairly narrow street, it's got its own atmosphere to it," said Henderson, who also heads lobbying group Savile Row Bespoke, on Tuesday. "It's just fundamentally a mistake from Abercrombie - they don't get everything right." More from CNBC: -- Want to be rich? Turn off lights, turn on water, NFL games go on
Seattle Pi - about 4 years
Turn off lights, turn on water, NFL games go on Associated Press Copyright 2012 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. Updated 2:24 a.m., Friday, November 30, 2012 [...] after a computer glitch in Miami on Sunday caused stadium sprinklers to douse Seahawks and Dolphins players and delay the game for a minute or two, we feel compelled to put forth a Pick 6 on inadvertent delays of game. [...] even after so much confusion and controversy, the officials missed another call on the same play — offensive pass interference against Tate that would have negated the TD and given the Packers the win. With the 49ers hosting the Steelers in a game of playoff-bound teams, the lights went out about 25 minutes before the start of the Monday night game, delaying the opening kickoff by 20 minutes. The critter continued on its merry way, broke into the open field, weaved back near the ...

Nate Silver: it's the numbers, stupid
Guardian (UK) - over 4 years
The poker player and baseball nerd turned political forecaster won fame after predicting the result of the US election with uncanny accuracy. And as his star rises so too does that of a whole new generation of 'quants' leading the digital revolution Nate Silver is a new kind of political superstar. One who actually knows what he's talking about. In America, punditry has traditionally been about having the right kind of hair or teeth or foaming rightwing views. Silver has none of these. He just has numbers. Lots of them. And, on the night of the US presidential election, they were proved to be right in quite spectacular fashion. For weeks and months, the election had been "too close to call". Pundit after pundit declared that the election could "go either way". That it was "neck and neck". Only it wasn't. In the end, it turned out not to be neck and neck at all. Or precisely what Nate Silver had been saying for months. On election day, he predicted Obama had a 90.9% chance of winning ...

Espressogrow: Plant Nutrition from Coffee Ground Waste
Business Review Australia - over 4 years
About a year ago, Mark Henderson was having a simple chat with a barista when the conversation led to what happens to the coffee ground waste at the end of the day. “They said straight into the bin and off to the landfill, [totalling] 10 to 15 kilograms of waste per day,” said Henderson. “And that was just from one coffee shop site!” Henderson went home to do some more research on the subject and discovered that “coffee grounds are a great fertiliser by-product” and that no one else in the world was manufacturing a commercial-grade product with it. “That one conversation led us to developing the business just under a year ago,” said Henderson of the Canberra-based venture he pursued with his business partner Geoff Howell: Espressogrow. Enlisting the assistance of an organic chemist, the trio designed a 100% organic fertiliser that works with a variety of plant and soil varieties. “It has some good chemical subsets within it – nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium being t ...

David Finkle: First Nighter: London Looks at the Scarily Contemporary '30s With 'Top Hat,' 'Sweeney Todd,' 'The Sunshine Boys'
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Theater-goers arriving in London in the next few weeks for the Olympics -- or just for theater-going -- will come up against a fascinating cultural phenomenon in at least three theaters. It's the sound of Olympics extravagance clashing with economic austerity. On the local stages, it's manifested in a hard-to-ignore backward glance at the '30s -- arguably the last time global finances were in such disarray. The most obvious example is the adaptation by Matthew White and Howard Jacques of the 1935 Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers piece of silver-screen fluff, Top Hat, at the Aldwych. The resulting stage souffle is just that and perhaps even more than an avid and suspicious Astaire-Rogers fanatic (such as this writer) might expect. The dance flick -- filmed in black-and-white but in glorious color here, thanks to Hildegard Bechtler's style moderne sets and Jon Morrell's high-fashion costumes -- was made in the RKO movie studio, of course. So there was no worry about re ...

Northern Football Alliance round-up (May 12)
Morpeth Herald - almost 5 years
PREMIER DIVISION THE celebrations ran long into last night as Heaton Stannington were crowned the Northern Alliance Champions after a 3-2 victory at Shankhouse, writes Jon Tait. Derek Thompson’s side were in a party mood and netted three times in the opening half-hour. Gary Dixon gave them an early lead from the penalty-spot and Ian Irvine headed in the second soon after. Dean Deagle pulled one back, but Heaton added a third when Ben Telford tapped in from close range. David Dormand crashed in a second for the hosts but it couldn’t dampen the celebrations as the black and white ribbons adorned the silverware and the champagne began spraying. Dan Balmer netted a double as Harraby came from behind twice to beat Ponteland United. Gavin Wood’s penalty put the visitors ahead, with Balmer replying just before the break. United sub Andy Mogwo crashed in a stunning drive from distance to restore their advantage, but once Balmer had levelled again, it was all Harraby. Peter Ferris slam ...

Top picks This week sees the launch of The Geek Manifesto, in which Mark Henderson argues that science needs to play (and is playing) a greater role in politics, the media, education, economy, culture and other aspects of public life. It’s a stirring rallying cry for geeks, and anyone who cares about science, everywhere. Mark’s a great science writer. Go try the book. This is so spot-on: Michelle Nijhuis reviews two new books suggesting that scientists should fight science denial by flaunting their flaws. Have to etch this on some foreheads: XKCD on ignorance Epic New Yorker piece on geoengineering by Michael Specter – “The Climate Fixers“. Some big problems with an updated psychiatry bible, and why a science journalist walked out of a symposium at the American Psychiatric Association meeting. Go Ferris!
