Master P To Host Benefit Concert To Help Louisiana Flood Victims
Huffington Post - 4 months
Master P is on a mission to help the victims of the recent deadly Louisiana floods. During the annual NBA All Star Weekend celebration on February 18, 2017, which will take place in his hometown of New Orleans, the music mogul is hosting a benefit concert and fundraiser in the city to help displaced families in Baton Rouge get back into their homes.   “Together we will entertain and give fans a great show but the real mission is to help get families back into their homes,” Master P wrote on the event’s website.  “In Baton Rouge, there is still a lot of pollution in the air, water damages and mildew.” Since Aug. 12, more than 75,000 Baton Rouge residents ― including “The Wire” star Wendell Pierce ― have been affected by flooding, which also destroyed approximately 40,000 homes, and left 13 people dead ― making it America’s worst natural disaster since Hurricane Sandy in 2012, according to the Red Cross. To help achieve his restoration mission, the New Orleans-native has ta ...

Solange's 'A Seat At The Table' Is A Bold, Pro-Black Masterpiece
Huffington Post - 5 months
A photo posted by Solange (@saintrecords) on Sep 27, 2016 at 2:57pm PDT Solange Knowles released her third album Friday. It’s a beautiful statement about what it means to be black, while also acknowledging how the world makes it hard to celebrate life in a black body.  The 21 tracks on “A Seat At The Table” take listeners on a journey, navigating the world as a black person. The album takes dark turns with songs like “Mad” and has very few upbeat moments with the exception of “Junie.” But perhaps, the most stand-out track is “F.U.B.U.” with its exclusionary lyrics that proclaims “this shit is for us.” And, once and for all, in “Don’t Touch My Hair” she breaks down why it’s not OK to touch a black person’s hair.  Knowles wants you to know that her pro-black message is “surely not new.”  In a conversation between Knowles, her mother Tina Lawson, and writer Judnick Mayard for an interview published Friday on her Saint Heron site, Knowles said the album ...

Rapper McKinley 'Mac' Phipps Re-Emerges In 'The Truth, The Way, And The Light'
Huffington Post - 9 months
NEW ORLEANS -- Hip-hop artist McKinley "Mac" Phipps, who rapped his way out of New Orleans' 3rd Ward and into a recording contract with famed music mogul Master P, is emerging from 16 years of dormancy with a new music video that showcases his talent and serves as an introduction to an upcoming documentary. Phipps, 38, has been behind bars since February 2000, when he was charged in the shooting of a 19-year-old man at a show just outside New Orleans, despite a lack of forensic evidence and another man's confession. Five prosecution witnesses have since told The Huffington Post that police and prosecutors bullied them into fingering the rapper. Thanks to dubbing, a double and camera tricks, Phipps' music returns in "The Truth, the Way and the Light." He sings: "I never sold crack, never murdered my own, but I'm the realest on this microphone." Filmmaker Michael Shahin of Invasion Pictures, who created the video with production assistant Claire Caufield, said the pur ...

For-Profit Colleges Top 5 Video Countdown!
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Every week there are amazing videos by and about America's predatory for-profit colleges, which receive billions annually in taxpayer money, spend nearly a quarter of that money on advertising, deceive many students into enrolling, charge sky-high prices, have enormous dropout rates, leave even many graduates buried in debt, and use high-priced D.C. lobbyists to keep the money flowing. But only this week is Republic Report counting down the top for-profit college videos! Here we go. #5.  "ICDC College: Successful vs Slacker! Which one are you?" This amazing video from ICDC College in Southern California features hip-hop semi-legends Master P and Romeo Miller trying to convince you that the school is great -- "laptop is included" and, apparently, also two women. (I wanted to embed the video in this post, but ICDC College blocks that.) #4. Sunny D Spends the Day With Fat Trel
Amog - over 3 years
It’s been nearly four months since I last caught up with Washington D.C.’s Fat Trel and every time he visits my side of town, I make sure to catch up with the promising rapper. Raised in the hard streets of D.C., Trel continues to create music that reflects the daily struggles of living in the US capital along with finding moments of excitement and thrill with some of his more explosive records (“Go Crazy”). If you’re either on the streets or in the club, there’s always a Fat Trel record for me to blast thru my headphones. Fat Trel recently visit New York while on promotional run of his current mixtape SDMG. Catching the attention of hip-hop heavyweights like Rick Ross & Master P, Fat Trel remains a free agent and in a label bidding war. Rocksmith also has seen great star potential in the rapper supporting his current project. I’ve had the pleasure of spending the day with Trel sharing about his newest project, his thoughts of New York City, and the excitement he had headlining h ...

New Jets QB Picks Jay-Z's Agency
Huffington Post Sports - over 3 years
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Geno Smith has joined Jay-Z for one big sports and hip-hop collaboration. The New York Jets rookie quarterback has chosen the rap artist's new Roc Nation Sports to represent him. Smith, who slipped out of the first round last month and fell to the Jets in the second round at No. 39 overall, fired his agents — Select Sports — shortly after the NFL draft. The former West Virginia star met with a handful of agents before announcing Wednesday that he had chosen Jay-Z's agency, which is partnered with Creative Artists Agency. Smith insisted after practice that Jay-Z didn't play "that big of a role" in his final decision — although the quarterback recently tweeted a photo of him with the hip-hop star. "I think it's just his agency," Smith said. "When you talk about being in New York from a standpoint of what they can do in the city, the connections that they have, I think it's a good move. Abteen Bagheri: American Music Stories: Portland and New Orleans
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Recently, I was given the opportunity by Nokia Music and the Sundance Channel to travel with a small crew and explore the music scenes in two American cities. Nineteen days with two friends -- my cinematographer Isaac Bauman and my producer Chris Black -- and a local sound person, spent in intimate communities in two dissimilar locations. Because the crew was so lean, I kept the filming process very open. The city and the people of the city dictated where our camera was going to next. For us, it was all about immersion -- not being afraid to go anywhere, but at the same time, trying to be as unobtrusive as possible. I picked Portland and New Orleans because I'd never been to either city and from everything I'd heard and seen, the two felt vastly different from each other -- culturally, musically, and aesthetically. Having never been to either city, there was nothing to feel jaded about -- everything our lens was seeing, I was seeing for the first time. So here's ...

The Portland Mercury - over 4 years
Music previews for the week of November 1-7. THURSDAY 11/1 DIA DE LOS MUERTOS: ORQUESTRA PACIFICO TROPICAL, EDNA VASQUEZ, DEATH SONGS (Holocene, 1001 SE Morrison) See My, What a Busy Week! SERA CAHOONE, THE PARSON RED HEADS, DESERT NOISES (Doug Fir, 830 E Burnside) Sera Cahoone continues a streak of oddly trance-inducing country on her new full-length Deer Creek Canyon, her third LP solo record (out on Sub Pop) since her days as drummer for Seattle's Carissa's Wierd. Warm production, feel-good/feel-bad dynamics, and lilting vocal melodies provide more than a few engaging moments on Deer Creek Canyon, and Cahoone's arresting lyrics are situated center-stage for the savory, sweet, or sour in all of us. Take the transitory brood of the slow-burning "Naked" and its subsequent launch into the pick-and-grin campfire ditty "Nervous Wreck"—Cahoone's ability to weave her songwriting in and out of alt-country hallmarks and to shift emot ...
