Grant Balfour, Victor Martinez Trade F-Bombs As Tigers, A's Benches Clear In ALDS (NSFW VIDEO)
Huffington Post Sports - over 3 years
Grant Balfour has a couple of nasty pitches in his repertoire and plenty of filthy words in his vocabulary. The Oakland A's closer could be heard using at least one of those profane words during a heated confrontation with Victor Martinez of the Detroit Tigers on Monday. The fiery 35-year-old Australian pitcher was on the hill for the A's in the ninth to close out Game 3 of the ALDS. Martinez led off the frame for the home team and the pair engaged in an unlikely argument during the at-bat. Tensions rose after the Tigers' designated hitter fouled off a 1-2 fastball. He then stared back out at the mound just a bit too intently for Balfour's liking. "Every time I make a pitch, I walk down the mound. That’s just what I do. He gave me the death stare and had the eyes locked on me," Balfour told Jane Lee of MLB.com after closing out the A's 6-3 win. "He knows what he’s doing. It’s all good. He’s a great competitor and a great hitter. I like a little fire. Obviously he does too." With ...

Ryan Vogelsong's dilemma is WBC's
San Francisco Chronicle - almost 4 years
Ryan Vogelsong's dilemma is WBC's [...] from a pure baseball standpoint - as in, the U.S. needs to win this game - it was a crime. The WBC's second-round limit is 80, so in that sense, it wasn't such a ghastly notion - and in the back of his mind, Torre had to be aware of the Giants' concerns. All of a sudden, here comes some red-hot (Vinnie Pestano) sprinting out of the bullpen as if someone made off with his wallet. Given that his arm survived the ordeal, this was a night for excellence and pride. Here was the man who started those desperate elimination games against Cincinnati (Game 3) and St. Louis (Game 6) and comported himself so well in last year's postseason. The steely competitor who picked up the win against Italy in a first-round game the U.S. could not afford to lose. Leave it to the teams who really care, who field most of their finest players, who speak of joyous celebrations and unbridled passion back home. The MLB Network's ratings have been ...

WATCH: Mexico, Canada Brawl At World Baseball Classic
Huffington Post Sports - almost 4 years
Anyone still wondering if the players involved actually care about the World Baseball Classic should review the film of the matchup between Canada and Mexico on Saturday in Arizona. With Canada leading 9-3 in the top of the ninth inning, a wild brawl broke out. The melee kicked off after Mexico pitcher Arnold Leon hit Canada outfielder Rene Tosoni in the back with a fastball. Tosoni was none too pleased as Leon had been warned by the umpire after his previous pitch had been inside. Mexico catcher Sebastian Vale tried to get between Tosoni and Leon as they began arguing but players from both teams were already closing in. The punches began flying once the players from both teams were tightly bunched near the mound. Mexico pitcher Alfredo Aceves, a member of the Red Sox, may have made out the worst in the fracas. Aceves was tossed to the ground by Canada outfielder Tyson Gillies. "Boy, I'll tell you, this really got ugly fast," marveled MLB Network announcer Matt Vasgers ...

The Grant Napear Show – May 3, 2012
KNCI 105.1 - almost 5 years
May 3, 2012 Major League Baseball ruled most of the day with some brief NFL discussion in the early stages of the show. Mike Lombardi joined to review the punishments handed down to the New Orleans Saints players as part of the recent bounty scandal, saying the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell might be harsh in his punishments but he’s shown to be fair as well as consistent. Mike also discussed the recent achilles injury to Baltimore Ravens’ star Terrell Suggs that will likely cost him the entire 2012-13 season. He also reviewed the draft, touching on the 49ers’ and Raiders’ selections and explaining how the strongest teams last year had the strongest offseasons. Later on, Grant took it to the San Francisco Giants for their early-season ineptitude with both the bats and the gloves, soliciting the listeners’ opinion on whether or not the team can be fixed. Radio voice of the San Francisco Giants Dave Flemming checked in to break down the team’s woes and helped shed some light ...

Matt Vasgersian will be hosting the FOX pregame show
Awful Announcing - almost 5 years
Prior to their weekly Saturday MLB broadcasts, FOX will air a half hour long pregame show, aptly titled the "Fox Saturday Baseball Pregame Show." The show will be taped at the MLB Network studios in New Jersey (as opposed to on-site at the stadium), and the host of the show will be MLB Network's Matt Vasgersian. He'll be joined by a rotating panel of analysts, most of whom are excellent. The show will air on FOX prior to the games, but not on MLB Network. FOX has dabbled in pregame shows before their MLB Saturday broadcasts for years, with one hosted by Jeanne Zelasko and Kevin Kennedy ending in 2008. That show was taped at FOX's studios in Los Angeles. Chris Rose also was the "host" of FOX's Saturday baseball broadcasts for the last three seasons, but it was a less formal pregame show and more of just an introduction to the game. Rose is also an MLB Network employee. Vasgersian had occasionally served as a commentator ...
