King of Corn
Huffington Post - almost 2 years
My Uniqlo white linen long-sleeved shirt was splattered with blood. My cigar bag also and bits of bright red speckle dotted my Sol Moscot clear frame glasses (Gary Oldman has a pair, so I had to have one.) The back of the boat was drenched in blood as if it was a scene from Dexter. All the beer had been consumed before 1 p.m. I was sunburned as red as the blood and later a scalding cafe con leche would do the same to the inside of my mouth. Some would say that this was no way to prepare for the Sweet Corn Fiesta in South Florida and attempt to become the five time world corn-on-the-cob eating champion, but I would argue that was exactly the way to prepare for the twelve-minute, all-you-can-eat, hand-cramping, jaw-locking, and kernel-discomfort scenario. I was beer soaked, blood drenched, burnt outside and in, and battle ready. Bring on the sweet corn! I should mention that the blood was dolphin blood or more accurately mahi mahi blood, but that in this hidden enclave near the Florida ...

All The People You Forgot Were In 'She's All That'
Huffington Post - about 3 years
It has been 15 years since "She's All That" hit theaters. For many of us, the teen comedy brings back fond memories of Freddie Prinze Jr. ruling the school and Rachael Leigh Cook rocking that little red dress. But beyond those two teen heartthrobs, "She's All That" had a pretty stocked cast. From Usher to Sarah Michelle Gellar, here's who you probably forgot was in "She's All That." Paul Walker After playing the too-popular-for-his-own-good Dean Sampson, Walker went on to appear in the "Fast & Furious" movies. Although he died in November of last year, Walker will appear in "Fast And Furious 7," which hits theaters in 2015. Usher Raymond He didn't even have a name in "She's All That," but Usher crushed it as the campus DJ, providing thoughtful commentary and music. These days, Usher is still topping charts. Milo Ventimiglia He only made a brief cameo as a soccer player who cleans Laney's house, but Ventimiglia went on to play the dreamy Jess on "Gilmore Girls" and later s ...

The Bridge: Matthew Lillard Deserves Applause For His Performance In “Old Friends”
Boom Tron - over 3 years
I don’t often bring up Matthew Lillard’s part in The Bridge’s overarching storyline beyond whatever small part he might have gotten up to in the latest episode. This isn’t because I dislike Lillard or his portrayal of Daniel Frye – far from it. Rather, his role in Tate’s plans has seemed so small in comparison to more pressing matters that I don’t usually feel compelled to mention him aside from in passing. But “Old Friends” has forced my hand; I can no longer ignore Lillard’s performance. In the past, I’ve never known Lillard to be much of an actor. My exposure to him was limited to such light-hearted affairs as Scooby-Doo and Without a Paddle. I saw him in the terrifically heart-wrenching The Descendants, where he was far less used for comedy, but his part was so small he barely made a mark on me. Maybe there are more serious examples of dramatic work from Lillard that I haven’t stumbled upon yet. Either way, I was unprepared for how moved I would be by his performance in this week ...

Maureen Ryan: Murder And Mismatched Cops Anchor 'The Bridge'
Huffington Post - over 3 years
If all "The Bridge" did was bring Demian Birchir to wider attention in the United States, that would be reason enough to watch the show. Fortunately there are many other promising elements holding up "The Bridge" (10 p.m. ET Wednesday, FX), which has been adapted from an acclaimed Scandinavian series by executive producers Ellwood Reid and Meredith Stiehm, a "Homeland" and "Cold Case" veteran. As is the case with "Homeland," "The Bridge" has a topicality that makes the series hum with a low-key but unmistakable energy. The drama's stories of crime and corruption on the U.S.-Mexico border aren't ripped from the headlines in a cheesy way, but the show meditates on these topics in ways that allow it to resonate more than your average crime thriller. In this day and age, it's astonishing that so many mainstream movies and films avoid topics like immigration and fraught border relations, but "The Bridge" incorporates these issues into its ongoing story in thoughtful and ...

'Game Of Thrones' Casts Small But Important Season 3 Role
Huffington Post - over 4 years
"Game of Thrones" has reportedly cast a small but pivotal Season 3 role -- Roslin Frey -- according to fansite Winter Is Coming. British actress Alexandra Dowling is rumored to have scored the role, after WIC discovered the credit on Dowling's resume. A request for confirmation from HBO was not immediately returned. While fans of the books already know why Roslin's casting is so important to the story, we'll try to keep it spoiler-free for those who haven't read the novels. Suffice it to say, Robb Stark (Richard Madden) was betrothed to an unspecified daughter of House Frey in Season 2 of the HBO drama, but broke that agreement to wed the healer Talisa (Oona Chaplin) at the end of last year, much to his mother's chagrin. The sprawling Frey family, headed by Lord Walder Frey (David Bradley) should play an integral role in Season 3, if the series adheres to the storyline of George R. R. Martin's third book, "A Storm of Swords." Winter Is Coming also reports that Lord Fre ...

Matthew Lillard picks top 5 moviegoing memories
Seattle Pi - over 4 years
Matthew Lillard picks top 5 moviegoing memories LOS ANGELES (AP) — Matthew Lillard's filmography runs the gamut, from playing a killer in the original "Scream" and the goofy Shaggy in the "Scooby-Doo" movies to showing a more dramatic side of his talent opposite George Clooney in "The Descendants" and Clint Eastwood in "Trouble With the Curve." The two literally save each other's lives, which may sound corny and feel-good, but Lillard shows a deft touch and finds just the right balance of absurdity and uplift. — "The Blair Witch Project," Park City, Utah, Sundance Film Festival, 1999: The Return of the King," Wellington, New Zealand, 2003: I was in New Zealand shooting "Without a Paddle" and halfway through production we had a three-day break ... for the world premiere of Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings: To commemorate the film's success, Jackson and his team were throwing a premiere party to end all parties. 'Trouble With The Curve' Trailer: Clint Eastwood's 'Moneyball'
Moviefone Blog - over 4 years
Fun fact about Clint Eastwood's last performance in "Gran Torino": Despite great reviews and $269 million in worldwide box office, the Hollywood legend was not nominated for Best Actor. Looking back, that's not too hard to believe -- Sean Penn, Mickey Rourke, Brad Pitt, Richard Jenkins and Frank Langella earned worthy nominations at the 81st annual Academy Awards -- but, still: With only four onscreen performances in the last decade, how many more chances will the Academy have to honor Eastwood for what could be a final time? Thanks to "Trouble With the Curve," at least one more. Warner Bros. released the first trailer for the baseball drama, and it looks like an amalgam of "Gran Torino" and "Moneyball," without the racism of the former and the Moneyball techniques of the latter. In "Curve," Eastwood stars as Gus, an aging baseball scout with failing eyesight who goes out on the road with his estranged daughter (Amy Adams) to find one last top prospect. (Eastwood's Gus has previously ...
