What Happens When A President Doesn't Like To Read? We're Already Finding Out.
Huffington Post - 6 days
Back what seems like years ago, when former President of the United States Barack Obama surprised Joe Biden with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, he invited the Vice President to step up to the podium and give an off-the-cuff acceptance speech. Biden proceeded to, from memory, quote a line from Harry Truman, a lyric from Irish poet Seamus Heaney, and a passage from the Talmud. In the moment, it was a brief but stark reminder of what was about to leave the White House – an administration that valued literature, led by one of the biggest book worms the Oval Office has ever seen - and what was about to hurl itself in. The new occupant, to say the least, does not share the same passion. Donald Trump doesn’t read books, and it’s not something he’s embarrassed about. When Megyn Kelly asked him during the campaign what the last book he read was, Trump responded “I read passages, I read areas, chapters, I don’t have the time.” The fact is, the words of other people don’t matter too muc ...

Why I Hate President Trump
Huffington Post - 8 days
For the record, I don’t hate Donald Trump the person. I hate Donald Trump the president. I wish I didn’t. But I do. Here’s why: He’s a pathological liar, according to Republican Ted Cruz. He’s a fake, a fraud, and a con-man, according to Republican Mitt Romney. He convinced 81 percent of white evangelical Christian voters to throw Jesus under the bus to vote for a man who bragged about grabbing women “by the pussy.” He fired the acting Attorney General in a Monday Night Massacre because she determined that the president’s executive order on immigration was constitutionally indefensible. He’s created an environment in which a southern white man can shut down a northeastern white woman while she’s reading from the floor of the Senate the cautionary words of a heroic southern black woman about a southern white man, Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, who was deemed too racist to be a federal judge in 1986. He disrespects duly-appointed, Senate-confirmed federal magistra ...

Last month, NBC revealed plans to bring former Fox News host Megyn Kelly into its morning lineup, reportedly bumping co-hosts Tamron Hall and Al Roker from the 9 a.m. slot. On Wednesday, NBC announced that Hall would be leaving the network after three years as a co-host on the show. She’d surprised her colleagues by rejecting a multimillion-dollar deal amid the hour’s healthy ratings; ac ...

People Have Book Recommendations For Trump, If He'd Only Read One
Huffington Post - about 1 month
Does President Donald Trump read books? He says yes, he “like[s] reading books.” Other evidence suggests no. During interviews on the campaign trail and post-election, he’s never been able to name a book other than the Bible, his own works, and All Quiet on the Western Front unless said other book is directly in front of him.  Still, let us posit that President Trump will read entire books during his term in office. In that case, there’s good news: He need not rely on his own ghostwriters’ output, nor commemorative books sent to him by CNN, for material. The experts are stepping in. The executive director of the National Book Foundation, Lisa Lucas, offered Time’s Sarah Begley a few reading recommendations for the new POTUS. Appropriately, she suggested books that have recently been honored by her organization, which administers the prestigious National Book Awards: Claudia Rankine’s Citizen; John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell’s March; Arlie Russell Hochschild’s ...

A Dad Takes On Spencer's: Your Trump T-Shirt Is An Assault On Us All
The Huffington Post - about 1 month
My daughter loves going to the mall. This is not shocking. It is also not surprising that your average American mall is full of mixed signals for young women, with mannequins and the models in store artwork often posed provocatively to depict the kind of fantasy girl that society loves to sell. As dad to a girl who now likes makeup as much as Minecraft, and for whom Forever 21 is the new Children’s Place, I find myself constantly walking a tricky line between supporting self-expression and making clear what is sexist, which things disempower as much as they empower. None of this is new. But it says something—and not something good—when we reach a point in our culture that a national retailer can sell clothing emblazoned with a sexual assault joke and display it for all to see. An Oregon woman walking through Portland’s Lloyd Center Mall was stopped in her tracks to see novelty store Spencer’s displaying a quartet of Trump shirts, one of which exclaimed: Grab America by the Pussy. Tak ...

Curb Your Ire, Bros: Anna Kendrick Is In Talks To Play Santa In A Disney Movie
Huffington Post - about 1 month
Anna Kendrick is in talks to play Santa Claus in a new Disney movie, Variety reported Wednesday. We know some people are incredibly protective of the traditional image of Santa Claus, so the backlash about this news seems inevitable. Typically protesters (aka Megyn Kelly) argue that Santa ― a fictional character with historical ties to a Turkish monk ― must be white. Now they get to argue over whether Father Christmas must, in fact, be a father. (Please don’t.)   The project’s working title is “Nicole.” Kendrick plays Santa’s daughter, who is left to take over the family business when Saint Nick retires and her brother chickens out before his first Christmas in charge. “Miss Congeniality” and “Two Weeks Notice” scribe Marc Lawrence has written the script and will direct the film.  Gender-swapping on the big screen is nothing new, of course. Just last year, misogynistic bros claimed their childhoods were ruined by Paul Feig’s female-centric “Ghostbusters” reboot. Marvel opted ...

Here Are A Few More Things Donald Trump Thinks Are Overrated
Huffington Post - about 1 month
On Sunday night, Meryl Streep masterfully slammed Donald Trump ― without ever saying his name ― in a powerful speech while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes.  Naturally, and disappointingly, the president-elect responded on Twitter ― his favorite medium ― to continue gaslighting America and to inform the world that he thinks Streep (aka one of the greatest actors of our time) is “over-rated.”  Following Trump’s retort, folks on Twitter couldn’t help but point out all the other #ThingsTrumpThinksAreOverrated.
