Melvin Earl Jones is a former American football offensive lineman in the National Football League for the Washington Redskins. He played college football at the University of Houston and was drafted in the seventh round of the 1980 NFL Draft.

Whitehall Community Lions Hold 63rd Charter Night

Hear them roar. The Whitehall Community Lions Club held its 63rd annual Charter Night banquet on Thursday at the South Hills Country Club, an event that marked the Whitehall Lions' founding in May 1949 and celebrated its achievements over the past year.  During a number of successful fundraisers and important service projects in the past 12 months, the club had provided financial support to nearly 50 community organizations and local, state and national Lions charities. The club also provides ongoing aid for eye exams and glasses for local children and adults in need. During Thursday's banquet, the club installed four new members and its 2012-13 officers, awarded two scholarships, and recognized three students who participated in a Peace Poster Contest.  The scholarships were awarded to Baldwin High School graduating seniors Michelle Bruni and Michael Markunas. Etowah – D.C. Cantrell, 78, passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the Elizabeth House, Flat Rock, NC. A native of Henderson County, he was the son of the late Carl Cameron Cantrell and Nannie Weese Cantrell. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Cantrell. Mr. Cantrell was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Etowah Lions Club of which he had served as President, and he was a board member of the WNC Lions Club. Mr. Cantrell received the Jack Stickley and Melvin Jones Awards for his service in the Lions Club, and he was a NCLIF Life Member. He was a member of Etowah Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Garren Cantrell; daughters, Irene Owen and husband Jimmy of Rosman, and Kathy Boggs of Etowah; son, Ron Cantrell and wife Rhoda of Chattanooga, TN; brother, Jimmy Cantrell and wife Patsy of Hendersonville; grandchildren, Brandi Patterson of Chattanooga, Chris McCall and wife Misty, and Marty McCall and wife T. John Weicht named Volunteer of the Month

by Joni Astrup Associate editor John Weicht's children accepted the Volunteer of the Month award on his behalf from Mayor John Dietz (right). John Weicht has been named the city of Elk River’s Volunteer of the Month for April. He was honored at the Monday, May 7, Elk River City Council meeting. Mayor John Dietz said Weicht is gravely ill and was unable to be at the presentation. His children, Willy and Heidi, were there to accept the award. In honoring Weicht, Dietz listed some of his volunteer contributions including: •Took volunteer shifts at the Business Expo and Fourth of July celebration for many years. •Served on the board of the Elk River Lions, including a term as president. •Hosted four Lions Youth Exchange students. •Worked at graduation parties, local festivals and parades and served as a youth sports coach. •Donated the contracting fee and helped secure volunteer labor and materials to build Lions Park Center for well below cost. •Served on the Board ...

The Stacy Lions Club celebrated such on April 7. The Stacy Lions Club was organized Jan. 1977 and chartered Feb. 9, 1977. The Stacy Lioness club was organized March 1978 and chartered Apr. 28, 1978. The Lions and Lioness clubs merged July 1, 2000. Randy Bernier of Stacy extends a heartfelt thank you to the Lions. Bernier received assistance for a cochlear implant surgery enabling him to gain limited hearing ability. Three charter members are still active with the Stacy Lions; Clete Bracht, Jerome Schroeder and Jim Keacher. The first Stacy Lions president was John Allquist. In the 1950’s as the Village moved into private ownership, housing development increased, and the population exploded (see Week#72), local chapters of some nationally known organizations were formed. The following story about one of them was researched and written by Ron Anderson of the Greendale Lions Club. Lions Clubs International began in 1917 as the dream of a Chicagoan, Melvin Jones. He believed that local business clubs should expand their horizons from purely professional concerns to the betterment of their communities and the world at large. The organization has since grown to over 1.3 million members in 200 countries. Local History! John C. Hershey Jr., 73, of Springtown died Saturday, March 31, 2012 at St. Luke's University Hospital, Fountain Hill. He was the husband of Leona D. (Lorenzini) Hershey. He was born in Quakertown on April 4, 1938 to the late J. Clair and Pearl M. (Bodder) Hershey. He served our country faithfully in the U.S. Navy during peacetime.
