Hollywood Diversity Awakens!
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Thank you, J.J. Abrams, for granting my holiday wish for a fantastic movie that (1) has a female protagonist, (2) passes the Bechdel test (i.e., at least two women characters talk to each other about something other than a man), and (3) has a diverse cast of superb actors in complex roles. Over the past few holiday seasons I've expressed my disappointment and frustration with Hollywood casting in essays like "Into the White White Woods," (2014), and "Calling All Hobbits of Color," (2012). And after years of wishing, watching the cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a Christmas miracle for me. But this wish granted was not just for me--and that's the point. As I've written again and again, casting with diversity in mind is a gift for everyone. Audiences of all ages, races, and gender expressions who go to the current Star Wars will find a fluid spectrum of characters with whom to identify, all of whom have agency and moments of ambivalence, a need to be rescued at times a ...

Chicago Fire Is Cranking Up the Heat with Mena Suvari
Boom Tron - over 3 years
Chicago Fire is going for a different kind of heat to fight against than what you would usually expect from a series about firefighters. The change comes along with the casting of Mena Suvari (American Pie franchise) who will be the central cause of this new kind of heat that will no doubt leave a few fires in its wake, but I don’t expect any buildings to burn down as a consequence. But I suppose it could happen if the timing is right and she’s in a sufficiently dry place… Wow, anyway: Suvari will be making herself fairly well known throughout Chicago Fire’s second season, so you might as well get to know her character a little bit beforehand. According to Deadline, Suvari will be recurring as Isabella, a close friend of Dawson (Monica Raymond) who is enlisted to help Mouch (Christian Stolte) with his campaign as President of the Chicago Firefighters Union. Now would be a good time to reveal the heat Suvari will be bringing to the show is of a sexual nature. That being said, don’t ...

PHOTOS: Naomi Campbell Defies Time At Versace Couture Show
Huffington Post - over 3 years
If anyone knows how to start a high fashion party, it's Naomi Campbell. The seasoned runway vet kicked off Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week yesterday, opening the Versace Atelier Autumn/Winter 2013 fashion show in a slinky black number. Uma Thurman, Emma Roberts, Zachary Quinto and Mena Suvari sat front row to watch as Naomi showed her fellow models how it's done. At 43 years old, the Brit has walked plenty of catwalks before, and she's now sharing her modeling wisdom as a mentor on "The Face." Despite years of scandalous press headlines (and that one falling incident), we think Naomi's still got it. Seriously, if that's not the walk of an icon, we don't know what is. Shannon O'Connor: Jodi Lyn O'Keefe Talks Stalkers
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
You may know Jodi Lyn O'Keefe from such roles as the ruthless assassin Gretchen Morgan from Prison Break or as the ultimate high school mean girl in She's All That; however in her latest film and backdoor pilot for Lifetime, Stalkers, she sheds her villainous persona and takes on the role of an ambitious district attorney fighting for victim rights. Stalkers, based on the Rhonda Saunders novel Whisper of Fear: The True Story of the Prosecutor Who Stalks the Stalkers, is the story of a polished district attorney (O'Keefe) who teams up with a hot-headed police officer (Drea de Matteo) to bring a stalker (Mena Suvari) to justice. With less than a week until the film's premiere date, I got the chance to chat with O'Keefe about the film/backdoor pilot and her hopes for its successful turn into a full-fledged series. How did you get involved in this film? I got the script and I was told that Drea de Matteo was already signed on to play one of the leads and I got very excit ...

Stacey Nelkin: What To Do If Your Ex Moves On With A Younger, Hotter Version Of You
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Breaking up is painful, stressful, and all-consuming. But for many, the real torture comes after you've somewhat recovered and you find out that your ex has a new love in his life. That's when the real angst starts. Whether you're of the "hook up" generation or a more mature woman in her prime (don't forget that 50 is the new 40!), it's always upsetting to discover. And with the proliferation of social media, it's nearly impossible to avoid. But for us older gals, seeing your ex gallivant about town with someone younger and hotter is practically a cliché. Remember middle-aged Kevin Spacey drooling all over the very sexy, young Mena Suvari in American Beauty? Or Humbert Humbert obsessing over the teenage Lolita in Vladimir Nabokov's classic novel? Or any one of the countless examples of May-December romances that drive the plots of Hollywood films? This phenomenon goes beyond the fictional realm. Singer Rod Stewart traded in his wife for a younger model. And more recent ...

Mena Suvari Tries A Risque Cutout Dress: Yay Or Nay? (PHOTO, POLL)
The Huffington Post - over 4 years
Even though Mena Suvari generally looks flawless on the red carpet, the actress has been known to venture into wardrobe malfunction territory (we're assuming she's learned to avoid sheer fabrics by now though). So when we saw her latest outfit, we began to worry that she may have been tempting the wardrobe malfunction gods yet again. The recent divorcée attended the Foundry LA store launch party in a black cutout dress. And, just to be clear, we're not talking your typical side panel peek-a-boo, but four strategically-placed openings that revealed the top half of her bust and her stomach. Mena must have had to tread pretty carefully all night to keep that thing in place... More...

Mena Suvari Dress Appears to Defy Gravity, What Held it Up
Celebrity News & Style - over 4 years
Mena Suvari wore a dress Saturday night in Beverly Hills which appeared to defy all laws of gravity.
