In Season 2, 'The Knick' Balances Medical And Social Instability For Another 'High-Wire Act'
Huffington Post - over 1 year
When we last saw the Knickerbocker Hospital, the year was 1900, the Gilded Age was in its final days and everything was in shambles. Botched experimental procedures, bloody street fights and an impending relocation all threatened the stability of the titular establishment in Cinemax's acclaimed drama, "The Knick." But as the show's second season opens in 1901, a slight air of optimism has set in. The hospital's chief of surgery, Dr. John Thackery (Clive Owen), has landed himself in rehab for cocaine dependency, and African-American Harvard grad Dr. Algernon Edwards (André Holland) has assumed his duties. That shift alone has calmed Knickerbocker -- at least temporarily.  "There are fewer deaths, they’re making more money, they’re able to see more patients, people are smiling at each other occasionally," Holland told The Huffington Post. "Things have been going great." Things have been going great for "The Knick" offscreen, too. What began as a gamble for Cinemax quickly bec ...

'The English Teacher' has a class of underachievers
LATimes - almost 4 years
The failing film wastes a fine cast that includes Julianne Moore, Greg Kinnear, Nathan Lane and Michael Angarano. "The English Teacher" is a tragedy masquerading as a comedy and doing a disservice to both. The same could be said for the film's normally fine cast. Julianne Moore, Greg Kinnear, Nathan Lane and Michael Angarano have all had better days.

Lottery Winner Using Her $30 Million To Finance Films
Business Insider - almost 4 years
If Megan Ellison shows what a very, very rich person with a yen for moviemaking can do, Cynthia Stafford is determined to show what a “a mini-mogul” who got her funding from a big lottery win, can do. In the last few months, as Ellison, daughter of billionaire Larry Ellison, has counted the profits and losses from such high-profile films as Kathryn Bigelow’s “Zero Dark Thirty,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” and John Hillcoat’s “Lawless,” Stafford has seen three of her own films come to the market. With a smaller fund and less experience in the business, the former single mother of five from Hawthorne, Calif., has backed indies that haven’t made much of a mark on the critics or at the box office. But she’s enjoying the ride, Stafford told TheWrap.   “I love stories, and I love to see how people view the world,” she said. “I remember watching movies at home with my dad and saying, ‘What if we did this? If we had the money, could we?’ And I would always say, ‘Yeah, we will one ...

Shailene Woodley Caught Making Out With Who?
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Looks like Shailene Woodley is taking her on-screen love public. The 21-year-old is reportedly dating her 27-year-old "White Bird in a Blizzard" co-star Shiloh Fernandez. The actors, who play love interests in the movie, were caught kissing during the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah on Jan. 18, multiple sources reveal. "They danced until 2 a.m. and ended up making out at the end of the night," an insider tells Us Weekly of the pair, who were spotted partying at the Hyde Lounge. Woodley, who was busy promoting another flick "Spectacular Now" at Sundance, has been previously linked to her "Secret Life of the American Teenager" co-star Daren Kagasoff. Fernandez, on the other hand, was reportedly in a relationship with actress Juno Temple, who is now dating Kristen Stewart's ex Michael Angarano. Ah, young Hollywood.

Kristen Stewart Worried Someone Will Murder Her With The Help Of Twitter
Huffington Post - over 4 years
It's no secret that Kristen Stewart isn't a big fan of fame, but the actress reportedly worries it will be the death of her. The 22-year-old is convinced that thanks to social media platforms, others have the ability to know where she is at all times, and she's afraid that information will fall into the hands of the wrong people, reports TVNZ. "Nowadays it's harder because everyone is on Facebook and everyone knows where you are all the time, and everyone's twittering," she is quoted as saying in author Talia Soghomonion's e-book, "Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner - In Their Own Words." "Like I'm going to die because somebody is going to say where I am and somebody is going to kill me. Someone's going to Twitter my location and then it's going to be like, boom," she explained. Neither the "Twilight" actress, nor her (maybe) boyfriend Robert Pattinson, has an official Twitter account or Facebook page, which might in part be due to her fear (and t ...

Two Moes & A TWILIGHT Vampire: EMPIRE STATE Casting
Boom Tron - almost 5 years
Nikki Reed Joins Dwayne Johnson Heist Flick The heist film Empire State has been racking up the star-studded names for itself lately.  You’ve got Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in what I presume is the lead, and apparently that guy ain’t going anywhere.  You’ve got Liam Hemsworth from The Hunger Games that the kids seem to like, and you’ve got Jerry “Turtle” Ferrara from Entourage.  You’ve got Eric Roberts’ kid, Emma, who was in that not-very-good Scream 4 last year, and who also caused quite the kerfuffle because she publicly stated she did not prefer Robert Pattinson’s character in the Twilight films (horrors!).  And speaking of Twilight, you’ve also got Kristen Stewart’s ex, Michael Angarano, and now just added, Nikki Reed who played one of those vampire chicks. Of course, I didn’t give a crap about any of this until it was announced that there would be two guys in the flick who had each played Moe Howard. The plot of Empire State is based on a true story of the heist of an armor ...

HAYWIRE Blu-ray Review
Collider - almost 5 years
Steven Soderbergh approached Haywire as a chance to turn Gina Carano into a movie star. As she’s been cast in the next Fast and Furious movie, it’s likely that we’ll see more from her. But Soderbergh approached doing an action movie as an art project, so he played with the structure and style of the modern action film. It’s ambitious, and not entirely successful. But he was right on the money that Carano can carry a movie. Haywire costars Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGreggor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas and Bill Paxton, and our review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump. The film beings with Malory Kane (Carano) going to a coffee shop where Aaron (Tatum) shows up to take her in. She’s not going to go quietly, and the film begins with a pretty brutal hand to hand fight. Kane wins and takes witness Scott (Michael Angarano) with her to have someone who knows why people are trying to kill her. She was on an assignment with Aaron where she’s supposed to rescue a ho ...
