Feinstein, McCain Get Off the NSA Bus
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Nothing like a growing global scandal to alter opinions. There's been no senator more publicly supportive of the National Security Agency during the repeated rounds of controversy from the Snowden revelations about its massively expansive surveillance programs than Senator Dianne Feinstein. She's been chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, the post the moderate California Democrat wanted for years, since January 2009. As the Snowden revelations began, she branded the ex-NSA analyst a "traitor." She vociferously defended the NSA and echoed the NSA director, General Keith Alexander, in claims that the then secret surveillance programs foiled some 50 terrorist attacks in still classified operations. Of course, this approach to Total Information Awareness, a disavowed Bush/Cheney Administration project, was an utter failure in detecting the Tsarnaev brothers' attack on the Boston Marathon, even though Russian intelligence gave us not one but two warnings about their jihadist bent. Steve Rhode: My Attorney Said There Was No Hope for My Student Loans. - Michael
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Huffington Post Reader Question Dear Steve, Im going through bankruptcy but my attorney said no to trying to discharge student loans. I currently have almost 300,000 in student loan debt with Sallie Mae, most of which is 'private loan' vs 'government backed'... I started these loans, with my father as a co-signer, in 2001 until 2008. As of 2011, I started re-paying them in a 'reduced interest' program to lower my payment. Without the program my payment would be $2500+ a month. Now I pay $1090....even that is too much. I 'll be paying it off till the day I die and its still so high that I have filed for bankruptcy. I cannot afford a car ....much else...its depressing. I have my 341 hearing on Aug 7th. my attorney flat out told me my loan wont be discharged. How can I find out if my school wasn't a "eligible education institution"....the first school I went to was Brooks College, a for profit fashion design school which is now closed. The second school which I tra ...

The (Michael) Huffington Network: Romney's Evolving Relationship With His Donors
Open Secrets - almost 5 years
Campaign finance is one of those areas where Mitt Romney's views have, well, evolved. But there are more than the obvious ironies to be found when comparing Romney the 1994 Senate candidate with Romney the 2012 presidential hopeful on this issue. Talking to the Burlington (Mass.) Business Roundtable back then, Romney called for the abolition of political action committees, limits on gifts to lawmakers and campaign spending caps. "[T]his race, I understand, Ted Kennedy will spend about $10 million dollars to be reelected…I think that’s wrong," Romney said. "[T]o get that kind of money, you’ve got to cozy up as an incumbent to other people -- all of the special interest groups who can go out there and raise money for you from their members -- and that kind of relationship has an influence on the way that you’re going to vote." Romney also singled out fellow Republican Michael Huffington, a House member trying to win a Senate seat that same year. "I mean ...
