Well-sung 'Hero' offers fresh twist on comic book fable
Chicago Times - over 4 years
Superhuman score drives new musical whose kryptonite can be found in its story Michael Mahler, the composer and lyricist of the very promising new musical "Hero", is a young, multi-talented Chicago fellow who likes to do a lot of different things in the theater. But if there's one thing that Wednesday night's warm world premiere proved, it's that Mahler needs to be writing Broadway musicals. Especially when Broadway is in need of all the heroes it can muster.

Peggy Siegal: Cannes Diary 2012
Huffington Post - over 4 years
An alternative version of this article will appear in the July issue of Avenue Magazine. Wednesday, May 16 I have hitched a night flight on Lisa Marie Falcone's G5 to Nice and arrive at Teterboro early enough to sneak three trunks filled with 10 Marchesa gowns onto her plane. Lisa arrives two hours later. She is making her maiden voyage to the 65th Cannes Film Festival as a producer of the hot film,Mud. She arrives with gargantuan Vuitton luggage that fills the fuselage. We are now part of 200,000 filmmakers, dealmakers, studio execs, stars, journalists, models, hookers and yachtsmen ready to see 22 films in competition and party till dawn for 12 days. Festival executives affected by the global financial crisis are delirious with numerous fashion houses acting as major underwriters and allow them to brand and control the press coverage on the red carpets, sometimes overshadowing the very films the festival is presenting. Sponsors who control the after parties a ...

Alec Baldwin Apologizes For Trashing Harvey Weinstein
Business Insider - over 4 years
Alec Baldwin has apologized to Harvey Weinstein for bad-mouthing the indie mogul at the Cannes Film Festival. Baldwin also opted not to appear onstage at Thursday night's amfAR gala in Cannes, out of concern that his public disagreement with Weinstein could be a distraction, individuals close to Baldwin and Weinstein told TheWrap. Baldwin and Weinstein were among the several co-chairs of the glitzy "Cinema Against AIDS" party and celebrity auction, which traditionally closes out the big parties at the festival. Reports that Baldwin was going to emcee the auction were erroneous, but he was slated to appear onstage with another co-chair, Heidi Klum, for a segment of the show. But according to Baldwin spokesman Matthew Hiltzik, the actor (left, arriving at amfAR with Hilaria Thomas) opted out of those duties and apologized to Weinstein for a tirade he'd made against the Weinstein Company chief at another Cannes party a week earlier. Baldwin had been in Cannes for the entire run o ...

Wild Oats Goes to Dimension Films
Movies Web - almost 5 years
Dimension Films continues its acquisitions streak with the pick up of the road-trip comedy Wild Oats featuring a talented cast including Academy Award winner Shirley MacLaine, Academy Award nominee Jacki Weaver and Academy Award winner Alan Arkin. The film is directed by Howard Deutch who helmed the classics Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful, and recently worked at HBO directing shows such as Big Love and Hung. Claudia Myers and Gary Kane penned the script which has been described as a spunky comedy that is a cross between Sideways and Thelma & Louise. Wild Oats tells the story of a retired widow (Shirley MacLaine) who hits the jackpot when she receives a Social Security check mistakenly made out for $900,000 instead of $900. She and her best friend (Jacki Weaver) then take off for Las Vegas, only to become media sensations and fugitives from justice. "Howard Deutch has directed some great classics and the cast is extraordinary," said Bob Weinstein, co-chairma ...

Norman Mailer did not want to let a little fear get the better of him. For Mr. Mailer, the proudly pugilistic giant of American literature, being scared of heights was unacceptable. ''The Golden Boys'' is an object lesson in how to squander a seasoned cast, a charming premise and a breathtaking location. Set in 1905 on Cape Cod, the movie observes the domestic chaos of three retired septuagenarian sea captains.
