Fred Armisen: 'I Think It's Clear' That I've Left 'SNL'
Huffington Post - over 3 years
It's official: After 11 years, Fred Armisen is done with "Saturday Night Live." In an interview with Splitsider, not only did the "Portlandia" star confirm his exit, but he said he felt he went out with a bang. "I think it's clear," Armisen said. "I didn't do any kind of official announcement, but I really felt like it was obvious. An ending that was a love letter to all the music I grew up with, and also to my friends and to SNL and to Lorne and to the cast. There was a lot of emotion attached to it, but it was a very positive emotion." The ending Armisen is referring to is a sketch he performed in May in which he played Ian Rubbish, a member of an English punk rock band. He was joined onstage by his "Portlandia" co-star Carrie Brownstein, plus several music legends including Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones, Aimee Mann and Michael Penn, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis. Rumors of Armisen's departure began to surface earlier this year, and las ...

Christopher Rosen: Why 'Girls' Didn't Have A Happy Ending
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
The second season of "Girls" concluded with a happy ending on Sunday night, minus the happy ending. Which may be what threw some people off immediately following "Together," an episode that is being called "out of character for the show" or "a let down" by some fans and critics. To wit, the show's key couples -- Hannah and Adam and Marnie and Charlie -- got back together, complete with a triumphant piece of rom-com scoring from Michael Penn. Adam actually ran to Hannah's rescue, the type of swooping, swoony gesture you might see in a movie starring Ryan Reynolds. Except while the images were happy, the underlying themes were not: Hannah, Adam, Marnie and Charlie are all back to square one. Any personal gains they've made in the year that the show has depicted were erased with one single montage. It was "Girls" as "The Graduate": the characters won the battle, but lost the war. That's kind of what made the season finale of "Girls" so strong. Lena Dunham spent an entire ye ...

Is Lena Dunham Really The Voice Of The Baby Boom Generation?
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Musician Michael Penn has the enviable, if not incredibly difficult task of scoring “Girls.” OK, that didn’t sound quite right. Allow me to rephrase: Penn composes the music for Lena Dunham’s HBO series, which he’s done from the very beginning. Of course, he’s scored films before -- for Paul Thomas Anderson: “Hard Eight” and “Boogie Nights,” among many other films. I tried to imagine what it must be like to evoke through music the millennial female Brooklyn experience, as a 54-year-old man living in Los Angeles -- and frankly, I couldn’t (and I’m a huge fan of “Girls” and I live in Brooklyn!).

Penn met fellow singer-songwriter Aimee Mann, and during the recording of her album I'm with Stupid (to which Penn contributed), the two struck up a friendship, which blossomed into romance and their December 29, 1997, marriage. Together with manager Michael Hausman they formed United Musicians, an independent music collective founded on "the principle that every artist should be able to retain copyright ownership of the work he or she has created and that this ownership is the basis for artistic strength and true independence." The album was reissued by Legacy Recordings in April 2007 with bonus tracks from a KCRW session. The reissue came in conjunction with Legacy's release of Palms and Runes, Tarot and Tea: A Michael Penn Collection, a compilation that includes several alternate versions and previously unreleased songs. It was with Free-for-All that Penn faced the specter of the one-hit wonder. The album, while praised by critics, was not as successful as Penn's debut, though it had more than its share of supporters. Rolling Stone called it "stunning" and CMJ wrote that the album "exhausts any doubts" about whether March was a fluke. In Vox magazine, critic Gary Leboff acknowledged that Penn could be "pig-headedly uncommercial," but, he conceded, "the payoff is sublime". Leboff continues, "His freeform songwriting creates tracks of startling shape and originality, offering literate reflections on the human condition "
