ACEP Applauds Passage of Historic Medicare "Doc Fix"
Yahoo News - almost 2 years
ACEP's president, Michael Gerardi, MD, FACEP, thanked Congressional leaders in both the House and Senate for their leadership in securing passage of this historic legislation, which ends a 13-year annual bandage approach to preventing steep financial cuts to Medicare physician payments. "This new system is essential to emergency departments.  Elderly patients are more likely to need emergency care than any other age group, and the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population is people over 85 years of age.  It represents a signficant  accomplishment for all the emergency physicians who actively made their voices heard in Congress.

Tonight in Music: Phil Anselmo, Cloud Control, La Luz & More
The Portland Mercury - about 3 years
PHIL ANSELMO AND THE ILLEGALS, AUTHOR AND PUNISHER, HYMNS, PROVEN (Hawthorne Theatre, 1507 SE César E. Chávez) Read our Q&A with Phil Anselmo. CLOUD CONTROL, BODY PARTS, BRAINSTORM (Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi) Cloud Control moved from Australia to the UK to make their second album, and ol' Blighty certainly agreed with them. Dream Cave is a delirious, sparkling bauble of melody, with just-about-perfect pop songs stitched neatly together: the walking-a-knife's-edge infatuation of "Promises," the skipping-stone bounce of "Scar," the subterranean slow-dance of the closing title track. The quartet stopped by Mississippi Studios last August right around Dream Cave's release, and gave their terrific new songs a live treatment that was appropriately thrilling. The opportunity to see 'em again in what's become one of the band's favorite venues should not be missed. NED LANNAMANN LA LUZ, THE GHOST EASE, HOODED HAGS (Doug Fir, 830 E B ...

Up & Coming
The Portland Mercury - about 3 years
Music previews for the week of January 15-21. WEDNESDAY 1/15 PATTERSON HOOD, FERNANDO VICICONTE (Doug Fir, 830 E Burnside) Since co-founding Drive-By Truckers more than 15 years ago, Patterson Hood has cranked out hundreds of songs and logged countless miles across the country. Hell, this will be his second of three solo performances at the Doug Fir this month alone. It seems Hood has taken a liking to our city, perhaps bolstered by the fact that he's struck up a kinship with local author/Richmond Fontaine frontman Willy Vlautin. In fact, the Truckers' new single "Pauline Hawkins" (which will appear on the band's forthcoming record English Oceans, due out in March) is named after a character in Vlautin's new book The Free, which comes out February 4. There's a good chance you'll hear that one, along with other classic Truckers beer-swillers, and choice material from Hood's equally raucous and introspective solo joints. There will b ...

MAP: Is Your State Ready for Climate Disasters?
Mother Jones - over 3 years
Tim McDonnell/Climate Desk Whether it's wildfires in the West, drought in the Midwest, or sea level rise on the Eastern seaboard, chances are good your state is in for its own breed of climate-related disasters. Every state is required to file a State Hazard Mitigation Plan with FEMA, which lays out risks for that state and its protocols for handling catastrophe. But as a new analysis from Columbia University's Center for Climate Change Law reveals, many states' plans do not take climate change into account. Michael Gerrard, the Center's director, said his team combed through all 50 reports to see how accurately and comprehensively climate change was taken into consideration, if at all, and grouped them into four ranked categories: No discussion of climate change or inaccurate discussion of climate change. Minimal mention of climate change related issues. Accurate but limited discussion of climate change and/or brief discussion with acknowledgement of need for fut ...

Tyson: A Look into the Downfall of a Legend
Stony Brook Press - almost 5 years
Michael Gerard “Mike” Tyson, former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, said in his documentary Tyson shown on April 16 in the Wang Center that he “never backs down from a fight.” “I won’t start one, but I won’t walk away from one either,” Tyson said in the documentary. The 45-year-old holds the record as the youngest boxer to win the World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation heavyweight titles; he was 20 years old at the time. The documentary started off with Tyson reminiscing about his early years. At the age of 12 he was arrested for the first time, and by the age of 13, he had been arrested nearly 38 times. Tyson was sent to Tryon School for Boys in Johnstown, New York. It was at this school that Tyson was introduced to the sport of boxing and was discovered by Bobby Stewart, a juvenile detention counselor and former boxer. Stewart trained Tyson for a few months before he introduced him to Constantine “Cus” D’Amato. Tyson and ...

The Old James Joyce (a.k.a. Brewhouse Cafe Avondale) Closing April 28
Decatur-Avondale Estates Path - almost 5 years
The Avondale Estates bar that kept changing its name -- from James Joyce Irish Pub to the Hail Mary to the Avondale Arms and finally the Brewhouse Cafe Avondale -- is closing its doors on April 28. Ashley Wheldon, one of the managers, said Wednesday afternoon, that financial problems brought down the bar on East College Avenue in Avondale Estates. She said all dozen employees have been offered work at the Brewhouse Cafe in Little Five Points, the other bar owned by Denise and Michael Gerard. The bar may not have drawn enough customers, but it got attention because of its identity crisis. The James Joyce opened in 2002 and developed a loyal following. It closed in late September and reopened a few days later as The Hail Mary, a sports bar modeled after a place in Grayson. Denise Gerard has said she expected the Hail Mary folks to keep running the bar, but they pulled out in December. The Gerards took over the pub again and named it the Avondale Arms for a short peri ...
