Justine Ashley Costanza: Interview With A Lonely Place for Dying Director Justin Eugene Evans
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
A Lonely Place for Dying (currently available on iTunes) is a powerful independent thriller from promising new director Justin Eugene Evans. Set in 1972, the film centers on a KGB mole, Nikolai Dzerzhinsky (Ross Marquand), who threatens to expose the misdoings within the CIA in exchange for asylum in the United States. Agent Robert Harper (Michael Scovotti) is called in to kill Dzerzhinsky and destroy the evidence he has against the organization. As the effects of Vietnam continue to mount and many begin to fear the spread of communism, the two men are forced to confront their past. The compelling film, which was inexplicably banned in Russia, stars James Cromwell and Michael Wincott. The renowned Wincott (who appeared in last year's Hitchcock) says that he was in awe of Evans' "unpainted and untrampled enthusiasm and his love of the work." "(Working on the film) just lit him up like a Christmas tree. That's a necessary thing to see," the stage and film vetera ...

Scott Mendelson: 2012 in Film: The Year's 'Worst' Films
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Almost to the end, folks.  But before we finally recap the best (or, err, my favorites) of 2012, let's take a pit stop to discuss what are arguably the worst films of 2012.  Now as always, I can't presume that I've seen every terrible movie out there (I generally avoid Adam Sandler comedies and didn't catch Parental Guidance in time), but I tried to highlight films that were both very bad and whose respective failures meant something more than just their artistic inadequacy.  As always, the films below are in alphabetical order.  So, without further ado, let's dive in! Alex Cross: To William Hurt in A History of Violence, "How to do you f*** that up?!"  You have a long-running detective series filled with larger-than-life villains and often insanely over-the-top violence.  You have Tyler Perry, if perhaps cast against type than at least hungry to prove that he can do something different.  You have Matthew Fox theoretically willing to chew up every bit of available sce ...

Scott Mendelson: Review: Hitchcock Thinks You Can't Handle the Truth
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Hitchcock 2012 95 minutes rated PG-13 by Scott Mendelson It is telling that the opening frames of Sacha Gervasi's Hitchcock don't even give us the usual 'based on a true story' text as its allegedly non-fiction story begins.  It's the only honest moment of the entire picture, which is so gloriously full of shit that it can't bear to even pretend that the story it's presenting is remotely truthful.  Technically based on Stephen Rebello's 1990 book, Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, the film alters history, dilutes the contributions of talented individuals, commits outright libel against others, while basically ignoring its central subject (the, um, making of Psycho) in favor of a contrived would-be romantic conflict between Alfred Hitchcock (Anthony Hopkins) and Alma Reville (Helen Mirren).  Worse yet, the story is told in broad, on-the-nose strokes that resembles the kind of writing found in bad childrens' cartoons and the picture revolves ...

What's The First Word On 'Hitchcock'?
Huffington Post - about 4 years
-- The man who made "Psycho" was no lightweight, though he kind of comes off that way in "Hitchcock." Starring Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock and Helen Mirren as his wife and collaborator, Alma, "Hitchcock" puts a featherlight yet entertaining touch on the behind-the-scenes struggle to make the mother of all slasher films. Hitchcock's very dark side gets superficial treatment as the film offers the cinematic equivalent of psychobabble to explore the director's notorious gluttony, sexual repression and idolization of his leading ladies. Though shallow, "Hitchcock" has a playful quality that often makes it good fun, its spirit of whimsy a wink that the filmmakers know they're riffing on Hitchcock's merrily macabre persona and not examining the man with any great depth or insight. "Hitchcock" is a promising move into dramatic filmmaking for director Sacha Gervasi after his 2009 documentary "Anvil: The Story of Anvil," a chronicle of heavy-metal wannabes w ...

First Look: Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock
Obsessed with Film - What Cultur - over 4 years
Fox Searchlight Pictures has debuted the very first look at Anthony Hopkins as the legendary Alfred Hitchcock in Sacha Gervasi’s (Anvil! The Story of Anvil) upcoming biopic. Now we know what Hopkins looks like in Hitch make-up, you can almost hear his voice in your head delivering The Master of Suspense’s immortal dry line, “Good Evening”. Not that I think Hopkins looks much like Hitchcock mind you. Then again he didn’t look a great deal like Richard Nixon either in Oliver Stone’s mid 90′s movie but he delivered a compelling and fiery performance that sure felt like Nixon. Filming began this week on the movie which is now simply going by the title ‘Hitchcock’ and no longer ‘Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho’, the name of the Stephen Rebello book upon which it is based. A wise choice, I’d say. The film revolves around Hitchcock’s mindset during the making of his seminal horror movie ‘Psycho’ and just like last year’s successful ‘My Week With Marilyn’ is a behind-the-curt ...
