Major Wind Storm Knocks Out LA Power
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
LOS ANGELES -- Powerful winds raked much of California on Monday, toppling trees, spreading wildfires, causing scattered power outages, whipping up blinding dust storms, and sending waves crashing ashore as a vigorous spring weather system swept through the state on its way across the West. Rising winds were reported in Arizona, where 34 miles of Interstate 40 near Winslow were closed to traffic. In Phoenix, blowing dust obscured the mountains surrounding the city, and at least four people were injured in a pileup when two semi-trucks jackknifed in a dust storm on I-10 in southern Arizona. The injuries were not life-threatening. New Mexico was expected to start feeling the impact late Monday, and in Colorado, the blustery system was expected to bring up to 2 feet of snow. Northern California was first to feel the lashing blasts, which spread to the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys. At least a dozen trees came down in San Francisco, police officer John T ...

Canyon Stormwater Project Ready for Concrete Pour
Brentwood Patch - over 4 years
Concrete is ready to be poured in the giant hole at Temescal Canyon Park to set the foundation for an underground 1.25-million gallon detention tank. It's part of the two-year, $8 million stormwater best management practices project from the Proposition O Clean Water Bond to remove bacteria and other pollutants from urban runoff reaching Will Rogers State Beach and nearby coastal waters, according to the Los Angeles Department of Public Works. DPW Public Information Officer Michelle Vargas said Thursday workers are about two weeks away from pouring the concrete after a long summer keeping on schedule. They just have to do a few more safety standards before laying the foundation. "People will see it," she said. Frequent commuters who use Temescal Canyon Road have encountered the lane reductions near the project. Vargas said they expect one bike and one car lane to be open at all times in both directions and they will free up lanes as needed. As a city agency, the DPW is c ...

5 tons of trash, from human waste to dead rats, taken from skid row
LATimes - over 4 years
Los Angeles officials have collected five tons of trash and more than 81 cubic yards of waste water in a series of cleanups around skid row over the last few months. They found hundreds of hypodermic needles, dead rats, 60 razor blades, 10 knives, 11 items of drug paraphernalia and a stash of marijuana. Two 5-gallon buckets of feces and three similarly sized buckets of urine were also found. The cleanup was launched in response to a Los Angeles County report citing numerous public health dangers in the area. The cleanup was between 5th and 7th streets and Gladys Avenue and Wall Street in downtown L.A., said Michelle Vargas, a spokeswoman for the city Department of Public Works. They included soiled mattresses, sofas, wheelchairs and portable toilets. City officials had said cleaning crews were hampered by a federal court injunction issued last year that placed limits on the removal of items left unattended on skid row sidewalks. Residents had complained that their property wa ...

L.A. uses disinfectants, rodent spray in downtown street cleanup
LATimes - over 4 years
L.A. began a major cleanup of skid row Tuesday, storing some belongings of homeless people and removing large amounts of trash and dozens of needles. The operation, requested by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, is expected to last up to three weeks and is focused on the area between 5th and 7th streets and Gladys Avenue and Wall Street. Notices were posted Monday on neighborhood walls, and officials with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority canvassed the area for weeks to ask people who sleep on the sidewalks to move their belongings during the cleanup, said Michelle Vargas, a spokeswoman for the Department of Public Works. When city crews arrived on Gladys Avenue at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, just a handful of people remained. They were given 20 minutes to move their bags and shopping carts before the area was cordoned off and sanitation workers in protective suits and gloves began moving through. A woman in a wheelchair scrambled to drag a plastic crate filled with blankets and c ...
