Gardner Resident Receives Para-medicine Pin at Massachusetts Bay Community College
Belmont Patch - over 4 years
(Wellesley Hills, MA – October 2,2012) – Gardner resident Alexiss Wheeler was “pinned” at Massachusetts Bay Community College (MassBay) last night as part of the induction ceremony into the Para-medicine profession.    “We are proud to recognize Ms. Wheeler for successfully completing the academic obligations of the Para- medicine certificate program at MassBay,” said Jo Ann Mackey, Dean, Division for Health Sciences.  “It is a rigorous program, so she has earned her place in the Para-medicine profession.  All of us at MassBay wish her the best in her future endeavors.”   Pinning ceremonies originated 1,000 years ago when nurses were recognized for their service to others.  Over time, pinning ceremonies have become a ritual to welcome graduates of health care programs into their professional practice.   Para-medicine is the highest level of training for the pre-hospital emergency medical service system. Paramedics receive extensive training in the use of advanced proc ...

Golden Tribute: Though there are flaws in End of the Rainbow, there's nary a flaw in Tracie Bennett's portrayal of Judy Garland
Metro Weekly - almost 5 years
Stage: Maybe you don't love Judy Garland. Maybe you don't understand or – gasp! – respect her ties to the gay community, or why she still has a hold on so many gay men of a certain age. There's even a name for their idol worship: Judyism. Myopia aside, if that's your deal, you're still not off the hook to see End of The Rainbow while it's on Broadway. To be sure, there are flaws in the story this British import by Peter Quilter tells about Garland in her twilight, in the months before she accidentally overdosed on barbiturates, as she worked to make yet another comeback. In the vivid play with music, we see Garland both on stage and in her London hotel suite, where she's settled in for a five-week run at a theater performing cabaret. End of the Rainbow But there's nary a flaw in the actress in the spotlight: Tracie Bennett, who doesn't so much impersonate as embody Garland. The actress was only eight years old when Garland died, and now at 50, she's also three years old ...

Liz Smith: Judy Garland: Gone, But Still On The Comeback Trail
Huffpost Celebrity - almost 5 years
"The earth keeps turning round and gets nowhere. The moment is the only thing that counts," said Jean Cocteau. IF THE 2 p.m. shuttle, from New York to Washington on the day of the White House Correspondents' dinner in D.C., had gone down, that would have been a real disaster for the five networks, especially for ABC-TV. Boarding at one time were Barbara Walters, with her longtime friend - the mover and shaker Vernon Jordan ...."World News" chief Diane Sawyer... "Nightline's" Cynthia McFadden...ABC's new star Katie Couric... NBC's Kate Snow and Harry Smith...plus at least two Fox anchors whose names escaped those looking on. (I guess CBS TV transported their people a la "Star Trek.") But all the aforesaid landed safely without any fisticuffs or you'd certainly know about it. "END of the Rainbow" is a troubling experience in Broadway's new musical theater, being both thrilling and depressing. I suppose the dichotomy of it all goes to the heart of those of us w ...

Fern Siegel: Stage Door: One Man, Two Guvnors, End of the Rainbow
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
There is a laugh riot at The Music Box, a British import that pays homage to commedia dell' arte with a modern twist. One Man, Two Guvnors is simply the funniest play on Broadway. From its stupendously silly one-liners -- "first names are for girls and Norwegians" -- to its outrageously silly plot, the show is a triumph of slapstick and satire. It's set in Brighton, England, in 1963. Francis Henshall (the brilliant James Corden) has been sacked from his skiffle band and grabs two jobs: becoming the manservant of gangster Roscoe/Rachel Crabbe (Jemima Rooper) and Rachel's boyfriend Stanley Stubbers (Oliver Chris). Neither employer is aware of the other -- and keeping track of their demands is a template for comic joy. Throw in a side plot, where Roscoe must marry Pauline (Claire Lams), already engaged to over-the-top actor (Daniel Rigby), whose affectations are priceless, and the wackiness is complete. There are gags, visual and verbal, nonstop humor and even the occasiona ...

Before much could be learned about Mickey Deans, his son also died just a few months later. In the play End of the Rainbow, set just before their marriage, Deans is initially portrayed as a man who tries to wean Garland from her addictions. However, as her ability to be on stage declines and their financial situation remains desperate, he eventually gives her enough drugs and alcohol to continue performing.

Deans became the widower and last husband of Judy Garland when she overdosed on barbiturates during their marriage on June 22, 1969 and Mickey found her dead body.
More Details Hide Details Following Garland's death, Deans co-authored a biography of Garland with Ann Pinchot, Weep No More, My Lady. The book includes autobiographical elements of Deans' pre-Garland life and their time together. The book was published in 1972 by Hawthorn Books with paperback editions issued by Pyramid Books. Deans played jazz piano professionally, often traveling when not working at New York's Jilly's nightclub. After Garland's death, he worked as assistant to impresario/producer Roy Radin in putting together old-fashioned vaudeville-type revues associated with The Police Conference of New York, a police fund raising organization also associated with Roy Radin. (Radin was found murdered in 1983 in the infamous Cotton Club murder, so named for a film Radin was producing: The Cotton Club.) Later, Deans settled in Cleveland, where, at one point, he opened a "haunted mansion" to paying customers. He spent time at his summer home getaway in a quiet suburb outside Cleveland, Ohio. There he kept to himself, barely making an appearance in his few-acre hideaway with a swimming pool and three-acre pond.
After two years of knowing each other, Deans decided to marry Garland and they were married on March 15, 1969 with Deans being apparently unaware about Judy's addictions to alcohol and drugs.
