North Korea nuclear test paves way for rare party congress
Yahoo News - about 1 year
By James Pearson and Ju-min Park SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's recent nuclear weapon test was designed to boost his domestic legitimacy ahead of a rare ruling party conference in May that could formalize market-based economic experiments in the isolated country, analysts say. Although violent, the years since Kim took power following his father's death in late 2011 have moved the country towards increased stability and a return to a more "formal" way of running the country, said Michael Madden, an expert on the North Korean leadership. "What some observers and analysts identify as instability is really more a matter of Kim Jong Un trying to reset a very entrenched system".

Kids Who Take Vitamins May Be Consuming More Nutrients Than What's Recommended (STUDY)
Huffington Post - about 3 years
By: By Rachael Rettner, Senior Writer Published: 01/27/2014 06:21 PM EST on LiveScience Young children who take vitamins may be consuming much greater levels than recommended of the nutrients, a new study suggests. For the research, scientists reviewed the labels of nearly 200 dietary supplements marketed for children in two age groups: younger than 12 months, and 1 to 4 years old. The researchers determined the level of vitamins that children would consume if they used the product as directed. (Specifically, they looked at levels of vitamins A, C, D, E, K and B12, along with thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, biotin and choline.) Most products contained vitamin levels much greater than those recommended for children in a single day. For example, dietary supplements for children ages 1 to 4 contained, on average, about 300 percent of the daily recommended levels of vitamin A, thiamin and riboflavin, 500 percent of the recommended level of vitamin C and more than 900 percent ...

As Banks Retreat, Funds Smell Profit
Wall Street Journal - over 3 years
By Ianthe Jeanne Dugan School Specialty Inc., a distributor of classroom supplies, borrowed $64 million from a private investment fund last year after it couldn't get a loan from a bank. Its financial problems persisted, and, in January, it sought bankruptcy protection. Most of the company's creditors lost money and its shareholders were wiped out. But its last-ditch lender, Bayside Capital, had its loan repaid in full, plus 12.5% interest. It also stands to collect a $23.7 million "early-payment" fee that would vault its profit above 30%, which has prompted a bankruptcy-court challenge by other creditors.Private investment funds, facing diminished returns in some other areas, have piled into the business of lending to struggling companies, part of a so-called shadow-lending system that operates under different rules than commercial banks. Hedge funds D.E. Shaw Group and Oaktree Capital Management, for example, recently set up funds to lend to small and midsize businesses, including dis ...

FBI: U.S. Teen Tried To Join Al Qaeda Group
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
April 20 (Reuters) - An 18-year-old Chicago-area man accused of planning to join an al Qaeda-linked group fighting in Syria has been arrested by the FBI, the agency said on Saturday. Abdella Ahmad Tounisi of Aurora, Illinois, was taken into custody late on Friday as he prepared to board a plane at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport bound for Turkey, the FBI said in a statement. It added that Tounisi was a friend of Adel Daoud, an American accused of trying to stage a bombing outside a downtown Chicago bar last year. The agency said Tounisi had not been involved in that plot. Tounisiappeared before a U.S. magistrate on Saturday on one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. He was ordered held until his next court appearance on Tuesday, the FBI said. A criminal complaint accused Tounisi of making online contact in March with a person he thought was a r ...

Did Rodman Just Reveal A North Korean State Secret?
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
It may be time to add Kim Jong Un's name to the list of folks who aren't eager to trust Dennis Rodman. In a Tuesday interview with The Sun, the retired American basketball star claimed Kim has a daughter. If the statement is true, Rodman may have outed a major state secret. “[Ri Sol Ju] kept talking about their beautiful baby daughter,” Rodman told The Sun of Kim's wife. There has been previous speculation that the couple had a baby girl, but Pyongyang has yet to officially acknowledge any potential heirs to Kim Jong Un's regime. Indeed, North Korea Leadership Watch editor Michael Madden told the Washington Free Beacon that the North Korean government "would have made an announcement” if the child was a boy. Rodman added, per The Sun, that Ri Sol Ju seemed "very elegant and quite tall for a Korean — maybe 5ft 5in." A recent United Nations report found that more than a quarter of North Korean children suffer stunted growth as a result of chronic malnutrition. ...

He dropped out of an art college course, in order to take up an apprenticeship with a freelance specialist painter and decorator. Later on Michael returned to college to take up a course in restoration, in order to learn how to utilize his artisan skills in the restoration of historic artworks. While there he fell in love with wood carving and has concentrated on it ever since, both working on restorations, interior decoration and his own recreations ‘in the style of’. By taking famous Old Master paintings and giving them a contemporary twist he uses humour to comment on society. His paintings Adam and Steve and Mr. & Mrs. Ritchie are typical examples. New Purple Line Alignment a Relief to Many
Riverdale Park-University Park P - almost 5 years
A little after 7 p.m., Pat Rinaldi scurried into her seat at Thursday night’s Purple Line forum. She’d donned a red polo shirt with Rinaldi’s Riverdale Bowl logo stamped in the upper left corner, as if to advocate for her alley's survival.   She’d heard rumblings that the light rail’s proposed route on Kenilworth Avenue had changed, sparing the bowling alley her father built in 1960. But she wanted to hear it firsthand. Michael Madden, the Maryland Transit Administration's manager on the Purple Line study, clicked to a slide labeled “new option review,” and Rinaldi sighed with relief. Her business, along with five others, would be saved. “Oh my gosh, it’s been a rollercoaster. I’ve been in business, I’m out of business, I’m in business, and then I’m out of business,” she said. “It’s been very emotionally straining. Really, I’m just thrilled, happy as can be to know that I can take a deep breath and go ‘business as usual’ now.” Since the announcement last year that the $1.93 ...
