Oregon miners call for peaceful protest after enlisting armed guards
Yahoo News - almost 2 years
By Shelby Sebens PORTLAND, Ore. (Reuters) - Owners of a gold mining claim in southern Oregon who enlisted armed activists to guard the mine amid a land dispute with the federal government plan a peaceful protest this week but want to avoid a standoff. A co-owner of the Sugar Pine Mine, Rick Barclay, called in armed guards from the conservative Oath Keepers activist group after federal officials served him with a stop-work order last month for failing to comply with federal regulations. The miners argue they have exclusive surface rights and do not have to follow federal regulations.

Vivian Diller, Ph.D.: Why Do We Condone Cruel Coaches?
Huffington Post Sports - over 3 years
I was deeply disappointed to hear about the abusive coaching tactics allegedly used by Julie Hermann, the recently-appointed Athletic Director at Rugters. Having just applauded the school's bold move hiring a woman for the position (there are only two other females in similar roles), I had to eat crow as the incriminating news about Herman's history surfaced. It made me wonder if abusive coaching is more rampant than we know -- not only in sports, but in other arenas as well -- and if, too often, it is quietly condoned as a means to an end. I'm thinking spelling bees, chess tournaments, dance and music competitions. Has anyone watched the adults behind the scenes of those events? As a psychologist who works with a number of child prodigies (and many former ones), I can tell you there are countless talented kids who deal with sadistic coaches -- and pushy parents -- who view cruelty and harsh practices as necessary to achieve success. Take Annie (not my patient's real na ...

Rutgers' Basketball Scandal Just Got More Expensive
The Street - almost 4 years
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- You've likely heard it said that one of the most important assets that a university has is its reputation. Rutgers University officials are learning this the hard way as the fallout from the school's former basketball coach assaulting players rages on. The latest ramification affects the university's investment-grade bond rating from Moody's Investors Service. On Friday, the rating agency announced that it was reviewing the university's handling of the repeated, videotaped assaults on the school's basketball team players by coach Mike Rice. If the agency finds that the incidents and the university's handling of them may impact its revenues, a downgrade may be in order. This is the last thing that the university needs. Rated Aa2 by Moody's, a downgrade would drive up borrowing costs for projects the university chooses to fund with bonds. Rutgers has roughly $1.2 billion of debt outstanding. That amount is expected to grow as the university plans major ...
