How Naomi Judd’s 'Debilitating' Depression Affected Her Relationships With Ashley And Wynonna
Huffington Post - 3 months
Naomi Judd revealed she suffered from a “completely debilitating and life-threatening” depression during an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts Tuesday.  In her new book, River of Time: My Descent into Depression and How I Emerged with Hope, the country singer opens up about dealing with anxiety and panic attacks in addition to her depression and time in a psych ward. Judd told Roberts that hiding her struggles affected her perception with fans. “They think, because they see me in rhinestones, you know, with glitter in my hair, that really is who I am. I’m sort of a fantasy ‘cause I want to provide that for them,” the 70-year-old said. “But then I would come home and not leave the house for three weeks and not get outta my pajamas, not practice normal hygiene. It was really bad.”  The country singer, who is the mother of actress Ashley, said the two are more alike than ever. “I mean, we have the same mannerisms,” Judd said. “We both read a whole lot. A Graduation Unlike Any Other
Huffington Post - almost 2 years
Spring ushers in the season of college commencements. These societal rituals -- with their sartorial splendor and lofty speeches -- commemorate the sacrifice of students to improve their minds and sharpen their skills before fully entering the rigors of civil society and their chosen fields. They are unequivocal causes for celebration. Lamentably, however, today too many college graduates are leave campus with heavy debt burdens in addition to their diplomas and gowns. Even worse some fail to obtain the latter while still accumulating the former. In my 20-plus years of work in higher education, I have attended countless commencement and convocation ceremonies. As president, I have always had a role as speaker, convener, or host. Recently, however, I had the pleasure of being a platform party observer. And it was a ceremony I will not soon forget. But first, just a bit of background. Smack dab in the middle of central Kentucky is Madison County. In the Commonwealth of ...

Easy On The Hairspray, Naomi!
Huffington Post - about 4 years
When you think of Naomi Judd, you probably think about her eclectic dresses, embellished blazers and twangy voice. The five-time Grammy winner (and mother of actress Ashley Judd and singer Wynonna Judd) has a fearless sense of style that has put her in the limelight almost as much as her strong pipes have. With her countless chart-topping songs, Judd has become somewhat of a god-like figure in the country music industry. While she has toured the world as one half of the singing duo The Judds, Naomi has kept her wardrobe choices, erm, interesting. Let's just say she isn't afraid of having all eyes on her, and her feathered hair, batwing sleeve dresses and crushed velvet suits are a testament to that statement. In honor of Naomi Judd's 67th birthday, we are taking a look back at some of her crazy style choices. While we may not have enough confidence to wear iridescent taffeta pants, we certainly applaud her for trying. var src_url=" ...

Vanity Fair: 13 People to Ignore in Politics in 2013
Huffington Post - about 4 years
by Juli Weiner, Vanity Fair Politico published a list of "13 people to watch in politics in 2013"--a ragtag assembly of television executives (Jeff Zucker), incoming U.S. senators (Elizabeth Warren), Judd sisters (Ashley Judd), and failed 2012 vice presidential candidates (Paul Ryan). Read it! Or don't! Whatever. But do read's corollary list of 13 People to Ignore in Politics in 2013. Which failed vice-presidential candidate made this list? Which, if any, Judd sister? And exactly how much does our Ignore-group overlap with Politico's pay-attention-to group? All is revealed below! 1. Sarah Palin. If something--literally anything, good or bad--happens, she will say something about it, and she will do it on Greta Van Susteren. The news value here is negligible. 2. John Boehner. The increasingly impotent House speaker will probably be out of a job as soon as his party can convince someone to volunteer to replace him. 3. Wynonna Judd. We just don't forecast ...

Ashley Judd Raises Money To Boot Scandal-Scarred DesJarlais
Huffington Post - over 4 years
WASHINGTON -- You might say Ashley Judd is making it double jeopardy Friday for embattled Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R-Tenn.). That's because after a national group started spending money to highlight his affair with a patient whom he pushed to get an abortion, the Tennessee-based actress is lending her well-known name to a fundraising push on behalf of DesJarlais' Democratic opponent, state Sen. Eric Stewart. In an email pitch being sent out Friday, the "Double Jeopardy" and "Kiss the Girls" star says DesJarlais, who is a doctor, is a prime example of why people don't trust politicians. And she says he needs to go. "For as far back as I remember, politicians have gotten a bad reputation for saying one thing and doing another. And, this past week Congressman Scott Desjarlais proved why," Judd said in the email, referring to news of a transcribed recording of DesJarlais pushing the woman to get an abortion. DesJarlais contends he suspected she was not really pregnant, ...
