Diana the Movie -- Not As Awful As You've Heard, But It Could Have Been Better -- (Memo to All Actors -- Try To Avoid Portraying Fabled Icons!)
Huffington Post - over 3 years
"You know, Hillary Clinton gives of herself. Princess Diana gives of herself. But they are not saints," said actor Edward James Olmos. Well, during no point in Hillary Clinton's lifetime has she ever been considered a saint. Princess Diana, however, even before her much-publicized charity endeavors, was considered some sort of other-worldly saint-like celebrity phenomenon. She was famous for being famous on the grandest scale. (So powerful was her impact before she married Prince Charles many people referred to her as "Lady Di" forever.) She initially tapped into the beautiful fairy-tale of a "commoner" being lifted to royalty by a (reasonably) attractive prince. Although Diana wasn't really a"commoner" at all. Just very young, and totally unsuited for The Life. Later, as her unhappiness and neurosis became known--often through her own clever self-promotion -- she was the first truly modern star of the obsessively searching "me" generation. Theatrically staged suicide attempts ...

'Diana' review: This was the love of her life?
San Francisco Chronicle - over 3 years
According to friends, and as presented in the film, Dr. Hasnat Khan was the love of her life, but there's a difference between an audience's being told that and actually feeling that. Yet what the movie actually gives us is an unsatisfying romance, the story of a beautiful woman's unaccountable interest in a hidebound and unappealing man, who is condescending and unreasonable and won't budge to accommodate her. [...] the movie seems caught in a tangle between the demands of the love-story genre, the actual facts of the relationship and the awkwardness of presenting intimate details from the life of a living person, one who does, after all, have access to the legal system. [...] Naveen Andrews, who plays Dr. Khan, has a difficult role. [...] this is the only kind of man Diana could ever be with, someone self-possessed enough not to melt in the heat of her fame. What director Oliver Hirschbiegel finds lacking in the story he tries to make up in style, giving us impressionistic snipp ...

'Diana' Review: Mediocre Biopic Wastes An Opportunity
Huffington Post - over 3 years
-- Let's start with the relatively good news: "Diana," a new biopic about the last two years of Princess Diana's life, is not nearly as horrendous as some of the reviews in her homeland may have led you to believe. ("Car-crash cinema," one British paper opined.) Now the bad news: It's just not very good. And that's a shame, in at least three ways. First, the gifted actress Naomi Watts deserves to be in a better movie. Second, Oliver Hirschbiegel, who directed the admired and Oscar-nominated German-language film "Downfall," about Adolf Hitler, somehow, er, falls down here. Finally, and most unfortunately, an opportunity is lost to dig deeper into a personality that fascinated the world like few others in our modern times — "the most famous woman in the world," as the movie aptly calls her. So where does it go wrong? For starters, the filmmakers may have been constrained by a desire to be respectful. It's not hard to imagine why. Diana's two sons are very much alive, for one thing ...

'Lost' Reunion On 'Once Upon A Time In Wonderland'
Huffington Post - over 3 years
It's a "Lost" reunion on "Once Upon A Time In Wonderland" as Naveen Andrews and Zuleikha Robinson cross paths again. Andrews, who played fan favorite Sayid on the ABC series during its entire six season run of "Lost," currently appears as Jafar on "Once Upon A Time In Wonderland." Robinson -- who joined the cast of "Lost" during season five -- will be joining him in "Wonderland" as "Amara, a powerful sorceress from Agrabah," according to TV Line. This isn't the only "Lost" reunion to happen this fall. Jorge Garcia -- who played Hurley on "Lost" -- appeared on "Hawaii Five-0" and reunited with Daniel Dae Kim. "Once Upon A Time In Wonderland" is the spinoff from ABC's popular "Once Upon A Time," but the audience for the fairytale heavy drama hasn't followed the new show down the rabbit hole. Ratings continued to shrink last week. "Once Upon A Time In Wonderland" airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland's Sophie Lowe: Alice Will Stop at Nothing to Get Cyrus Back
Seattle Pi - over 3 years
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland took viewers back down the rabbit hole last week, but this isn't the Alice you remember from your childhood. On the Once spin-off, a grown-up Alice (Sophie Lowe) has traveled back to Wonderland in order to save her true love Cyrus (Peter Gadiot). Standing in her way are the powerful Red Queen (Emma Rigby) and Jafar (Naveen Andrews), who have determined to steal her wishes and crush Alice's dreams of a happy ending. Once Upon a Time in Wonderland takes Alice down the rabbit hole again How is this Alice different from the one we've grown up hearing about in the fairy tale? Will we see flashbacks of how Alice became this badass character? [...] she's been in Wonderland for so long, so she had to defend herself and figure out for herself how she can survive in Wonderland. 'Once Upon A Time In Wonderland' Premiere: 7 Reasons To Watch ABC's Whimsical Spinoff
Huffington Post - over 3 years
ABC's "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland" premieres tonight (Thurs., Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. ET), and if you're a fan of the whimsical world that "Lost" alums Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz have created on the original "Once Upon a Time," you'll find its spinoff thoroughly enchanting. And if you're not a fan of the mothership, "Wonderland" still has the capacity to pull you down the rabbit hole. Unlike the sprawling, flashback-laden, dimension-hopping shenanigans that may make "OUAT" (now in its third season) a little daunting to newcomers, "Wonderland" aims to be a more self-contained effort -- Kitsis admitted that they were inspired by FX's "American Horror Story" in that each season has a beginning, middle and end. Horowitz explained that with the show's initial 13-episode order, they aim to tell a "closed-ended story within this season. Should it work, we’ll hopefully move on to many more adventures with Alice [Sophie Lowe] and all these great characters." The producers are adamant tha ...

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland: Big Cat Keith David Lends His Voice
Boom Tron - over 3 years
At the current rate it’s going, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland will have more voice actors than physical actors in its cast! ABC’s Once Upon a Time spinoff has added yet another big voice actor its roster of people who shall be heard but not seen. Already we have John Lithgow voicing the White Rabbit and Roger Daltrey reprising his part as the hookah-smoking caterpillar. Now we open our arms to a man with a particularly well-known voice: Mr. Keith David. He’s done voice over work for Ken Burns, as well as several animated features (The Princess and the Frog) and video games (Mass Effect series). Now David will be voicing one of Wonderland’s most famous characters: the Cheshire Cat, says TVLine. The goofy grinned feline will make its first appearance in the spinoff’s premiere, which will air Thursday, Oct. 10. While David would hardly be the first name I’d think of when considering voice actors for the Cheshire Cat, I’m excited to hear what his interpretation of the character will s ...

Interview with Once Upon A Time in Wonderland Cast & Executive Producer
CNN - over 3 years
I got the opportunity to interview the stars and Executive Producer earlier this year at SDCC where I got to ask a few questions about the book, series, idea behind the spinoff and how it's independent from Once Upon a Time. In case your unfamiliar with the new series. It takes up where the iconic books leave off and answers the question of 'What Happened to Alice' after she returns to England??? This is an interesting mashup with a blending of Aladdin and Alice in Wonderland that is in the spirit of Once Upon A Time because we all love fair tales and ABC has a huge roster of untold stories! It is being filmed in Vancouver and will be a 'mini series' where the entire story will be complete in one season. About Once Upon A Time in Wonderland: In Victorian England, the young and beautiful Alice (Sophie Lowe) tells a tale of a strange new land that exists on the other side of a rabbit hole. An invisible cat, a hookah smoking caterpillar and playing cards that talk are just ...

'Once' Fans Will Get 'Something They've Never Seen Before'
Huffington Post - over 3 years
The cast and creators of "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland" were on hand at ABC's TCA day to discuss the "Once Upon a Time" spinoff's trajectory and the addition of Jafar (Naveen Andrews) to the series' mythology. So far, critics and Comic-Con attendees have only seen 19 minutes of footage from the show's pilot, which feature Alice (Sophie Lowe) in a mental institution with doctors interrogating her about her "delusions" of a visit to a place called Wonderland -- which is only seen in flashbacks -- and her lost love, a genie called Cyrus (Peter Gadiot). The pilot presentation was enough to convince ABC execs to greenlight the fantastical series, but co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis promised that the full pilot will take fans into present-day Wonderland, which will give viewers "a sense of the world now with Alice’s return," as well as introducing them to "Wonderland's" version of Jafar. Andrews was enthusiastic about tackling the classic "Aladdin" villain, ...

You Might Just Get Your Wish, 'Lost' Fans
Huffington Post - over 3 years
It's been nearly nine years since we were first introduced to the survivors of Oceanic flight 815, and J. J. Abrams and TV masterminds alike have been trying to recreate the phenomenon that was "Lost" ever since. Michael Emerson, who played Ben Linus on the hit ABC series, has been a part of that effort. The actor currently stars on the Abrams-produced "Person of Interest" on CBS, and while promoting the show at Comic-Con in San Diego, he told Zap2It's Terri Schwartz that fans might see the "Lost" cast reunite at the convention next year in honor of the show's 10-year anniversary. "I've heard some murmurings of some kind of reunion. Whether it will take place at Comic-Con or not I'm not sure," Emerson told the site. "No matter what happens, if anything happens, it will be really hard logistically to put it together." In another corner of Comic-Con, Emerson's former "Lost" co-star Henry Ian Cusick was also looking back on the fan favorite. Cusick, who played Desmond H ...

Diana: watch the first trailer of the royal biopic
Guardian (UK) - over 3 years
The first trailer has been released of the Princess Diana biopic starring Naomi Watts – and the signs are that this is going to be a pretty soft-centred affair The first trailer for Downfall director Oliver Hirschbiegel's Princess Diana biopic has hit the web, hinting at an adulatory portrait of the figure it dubs "the most famous woman in the world". Diana is seen escaping from scurrilous paparazzi, smiling as third world children run through a sumptuous garden, and gingerly stepping through landmine-strewn African terrain, a Red Cross symbol pasted to her chest. "An icon, adored by millions", the trailer tells us, to soaring strains of uplifting piano. Starring Naomi Watts as the princess and titled simply Diana, the film is Hirschbiegel's followup to 2009's Northern Ireland troubles-themed Five Minutes of Heaven. The German director is best known for the acclaimed 2004 film Downfall, retelling of the last days of Adolf Hitler. Diana apparently centres on its subject's romance ...

Video: Naomi Watts' 'Diana' trailer long on looks, short on words
LATimes - over 3 years
“The Legend Is Never The Whole Story,” an inter-title promises in the new trailer for “Diana,” Naomi Watts’ take on the iconic royal. For that full tale, though, we’ll have to wait for a later point — perhaps the release of the Oliver Hirschbiegel film. The one-minute teaser released today features no dialogue, instead playing a piano theme over a quick succession of shots of Watts as Lady Di, looking if not sounding like the late legend. We see a series of images of the Princess of Wales: with family at home, with glitterati at parties, avoiding paparazzi in the London streets. PHOTOS: Summer Sneaks 2013 The movie focuses on Diana’s relationship with Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews), whom she met in the last years of her life. There's a quick shot of that too, but anything more specific about her character will have to wait. Incidentally, the movie will come in the same season as “Grace of Monaco,” in which fellow Aussie and bff Nicole Kidman also takes on a galvanizing royal. T ...

Princess Diana Movie Very 'High Risk' Says Star
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Why did Naomi Watts agree to play Princess Diana in the new film "Diana"? According to the actress, because the project was going to happen whether she accepted the role or not Calling the role "high, high, high risk," but also a "very, very important piece of our history," Watts told Peter Travers that the Princess Diana movie was like a fast-moving train she felt compelled to jump aboard. "It was a story that was going to be told, and I just felt like she was a fascinating woman," Watts said. "It's delicate because her boys are still around, obviously. Very much so. But, like I said, it was going to be told. Maybe it was more recent than people [expected]." Originally called "Caught in Flight," "Diana" focuses on Diana's long-time love affair with Dr. Hasnat Kahn (Naveen Andrews), the "love of her life." According to Variety, the film will show "how finding true personal happiness for the first time allowed [Princess Di] to evolve into a major international campai ...
