Finally Famous, After 25 Years Of Acting
Huffington Post - over 3 years
LOS ANGELES — Just one glimpse of her face is followed by a flash of familiarity. But, oh, that name just isn't coming. Together again for the first time: filmgoers, meet veteran character actress Lili Taylor. After 25 years making movies, Taylor said the public most regularly approaches her about work in "Mystic Pizza" (1988), "I Shot Andy Warhol" (1996) and the 1999 remake of the `60s horror classic "The Haunting." "I feel like that's a nice spectrum, because you've got your indie, you've got your big one," the 46-year-old actress noted in a recent interview. "Or they can't remember," she continued, "because I'm one of those who they think I either walk my dog in their neighborhood or I live in their building. And that's the kind of actor I am, which is fine." To the stranger, she says, "`I know you think I'm in your building. It's `The Haunting' and that's where you know me from, and let's just cut to the chase.'" While "The Haunting" grossed nea ...

'The Reenactments,' by Nick Flynn
San Francisco Chronicle - about 4 years
'The Reenactments,' by Nick Flynn Chronicling an operatic family history that included his mother's shotgun suicide and his alcoholic father's stints in the slammer, it seemed a natural for big-screen treatment. Aristotle, in his Poetics, never promised catharsis for the makers of art, only for the audience," writes Flynn, who asserts that when he returns to his mother's suicide through poetry or a film adaptation, "my experience is not one of catharsis, but of a nearly unbearable resurgence of chaos and pain. [...] after watching De Niro and Dano repeat 20 takes of the recognition scene in which father and son are reunited at the homeless shelter, Flynn concedes, If it were my film I'd use every take, I'd make a whole movie out of this one moment, out of De Niro asking, Do you have a room for the evening? Why is it important for Julianne to know what my mother's hair was like, for De Niro to know what jacket my father would wear?" Lunching with Dano, he catche ...

Tribeca Film Festival 2012: What Drives Robert De Niro
Wall Street Journal - almost 5 years
Robert De Niro in “Red Lights” Robert De Niro and his longtime producing partner Jane Rosenthal have been working together for more than 20 years at Tribeca Productions. Over that time, they have produced more than two dozen movies, ranging from indie fare like the funny but financially unsuccessful Hollywood satire “What Just Happened?” to wildly profitable franchise films, like the “Meet the Parents” trilogy. In 2002, they started the Tribeca Film Festival as a creative response to the devastation of downtown Manhattan following the September 11th attacks. At the time, they never imagined it would become a downtown institution, generating an estimated $725 million in economic activity for the area and screening more than 1,300 films from 80 countries since it began. The 2012 edition of the festival, featuring 90 films from 32 countries, runs from April 19 through April 29. It will kick off with the romantic comedy “The Five Year Engagement” starring Emily Blunt and Jason ...

Daddy Drama
The Portland Mercury - almost 5 years
Being Flynn: Another bullshit night with Robert De Niro. by Alison Hallett BEING FLYNN begins with an ending. Nick's (Paul Dano) girlfriend returns from a trip to find traces of his infidelity in the ashtray by their bed, full of lipstick-smeared cigarette butts. Incensed, she begins chucking books at Nick's head, sarcastically reeling off their titles as she rips into him for a high-mindedness his actions don't live up to. The scene serves the double function of letting us know that while Nick may be a cad, he's also troubled, smarter than he looks, and maybe has a sensitive side... basically, he's Ponyboy Curtis, and he's just been kicked out of his apartment. Aimless and heavy-drinking, he rents a room in an abandoned strip club and gets a job working at a homeless shelter. One day he's stunned to encounter his estranged father at the check-in window, a man he's only met once in his adult life—and who, it turns out, fancies himself a writ ...

Paul Dano, 'Being Flynn' Star, Looks Back On 'Little Miss Sunshine' And 'There Will Be Blood'
Moviefone Blog - almost 5 years
There's something fascinating about Paul Dano. Perhaps it's the fact that there aren't many people who walk around thinking, I've got that guy figured out. I'm always skeptical of actors who just love doing press, and Paul Dano is definitely not one of those actors. Not to say that he goes out of his way to be mysterious or secretive -- he just kind of is. And that makes him interesting. Still, I have to wonder whether his reluctance to open up has harmed his career. After all, given the financial success of "Little Miss Sunshine" and "There Will Be Blood," you'd think he'd be a household name by now. But no. Now Dano stars as Nick Flynn in "Being Flynn" -- a film based on the popular memoir "Another Bullshit Night in Suck City," about a drug abuser, Nick, and his relationship with his homeless father, Jonathan (Robert De Niro). When I spoke to the real Nick Flynn, who wrote the book, he told me that the movie originally tested with the title "Welcome to Suck City." Unfortunately, the ...

Comment on The bitter taste of sugar prohibition by Nick Flynn
The Independent - about 5 years
“'Live fast, die young' is great if you don't give a damn about the people who are paying/caring for you for the last 20 years of your rather unhappy existence” This is an often asserted, and I believe, incorrect argument.   Think about the economics,  everyone has to die of something. The largest difference between those who live a long time and those who die young is that the latter don't claim 20 years of their pension they spent a lifetime paying into, saving society huge sums of money.  The long lived may have similar medical and care costs that come at the age of 85 rather than 60.  Ergo: it's the long lived healthy types who are the selfish ones.  Perhaps we should be reducing pension contribution for sugar eaters to make things fairer?
