Honoring Rachel Robinson, Baseball Pioneer and Civil Rights Activist
Huffington Post - over 2 years
On Sunday, Rachel Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Reliquary's Shrine of the Eternals, along with Dizzy Dean and Don Zimmer. Jim Bouton, former major league pitcher and author of the iconoclastic book Ball Four, has called the Reliquary a "people's Hall of Fame." It celebrates baseball's rebels and renegades. I had the privilege to introduce the induction of Mrs. Robinson at Sunday's ceremony at the Pasadena Public Library. Below is my introduction. It is my pleasure to introduce the induction of Rachel Robinson into the Shrine of the Eternals. It will be accepted by Delano Robinson, Rachel's sister-in-law and a long-time Pasadena resident. Rachel Robinson was voted into the Shrine the first time she was on the ballot - a rare feat. Her entry completes the cycle about baseball's battle against segregation. Jackie Robinson, Josh Gibson, and Lester Rodney (the sports editor of the Daily Worker who was an early champion of baseball's integration) have already been ele ...

'Sleepy Hollow' Promotes John Noble, Lyndie Greenwood To Series Regulars For Season 2
Huffington Post - about 3 years
While the first season of "Sleepy Hollow" was held together brilliantly by the electric chemistry between its leads, Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie, a true ensemble formed by season's end. Two of the most important pieces of that puzzle were recurring players John Noble and Lyndie Greenwood. To reward them -- and the fans -- both actors have been upgraded to series regulars for the show's second season, as reported by Deadline. "Sleepy Hollow" had a 13-episode premiere season on Fox, which has already wrapped. It returns to the network in fall 2014. Greenwood portrays Jenny Mills, Abbie's tormented-but-brave sister, while Noble's story proves a little more complicated. As a Sin Eater named Henry Parrish, he originally helped Ichabod and Abbie. In the season finale, though, he was revealed to actually be Jeremy Crane, son to Ichabod and Katrina. Even worse, he's also the embodiment of the Second of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: War. This marks Noble's first series regular role o ...

Sleepy Hollow Boss "Stunned" By Show's Success
Seattle Pi - about 3 years
Fox's supernatural drama Sleepy Hollow has been the breakout hit of the fall season - a surprise for a genre show that has so far included a headless horseman, the sandman, witches and other monsters-of-the-week that go bump in the night. In a television era where fans are hesitant to get invested in heavily serialized series - fearing their shows will get canceled and they ultimately won't get answers - Sleepy Hollow has found a perfect balance between its serialized elements and stand-alone cases-of-the-week, making audiences feel they've had a complete experience after every episode. "[...] you can come back because there are a lot of strands that are still dangling and things you want to know more about," Kurtzman says. [...] making it easier for viewers to embrace the weird elements of the show was the relatable Abbie Milles (Nicole Beharie), whom viewers followed as she accepted this world. "[...] much of what you're seeing there is really mirroring this lovely relationshi ...

The Fandom Menace
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Although I'm not one of the regulars on ABC's new fantasy series Once Upon A Time In Wonderland I've nevertheless tumbled down the rabbit hole into the land of fandom for Sleepy Hollow, the show I actually am on. It's no secret that Sleepy Hollow is one of the surprise hits of this television season, renewed for a second season after airing just three episodes. The audience response has been tremendous, demonstrated by the countless fan pages that began appearing shortly after the show's premiere. The Sleepy Hollow Fandom immediately embraced the plots, characters and relationships, creating and sharing their own original art and stories (fan fiction, or fanfic, for short). They are legion, but the epicenter of their interaction is on Tumblr, the most exciting social platform on these streets that celebrates diversity, demands accountability (or at the very least authenticity) and promotes a level of interaction that is unlike anything I've experienced. Far more thoughtful analys ...

Can love save “Sleepy Hollow”?
Salon.com - over 3 years
During last night's episode of "Sleepy Hollow," displaced Revolutionary soldier Ichabod Crane and small town police officer Abbie Mills bonded over baseball. Crane listened, bemused, as the diminutive lieutenant expounded upon the beauty of the game. "It's about teamwork," she insists. "The players have to have faith in each other and watch each other's backs because without that, the team don't work." Mills, who is black, went on to laud the egalitarian nature of the sport, explaining that baseball "does not discriminate." Sure, her idealism sounded a little hokey, but Nicole Beharie, who plays Mills, is admirably adept at animating even the most rote exposition. Beharie's scene partner, the lithe, handsome Tom Mison, sopped up her earnestness with those mischievous green eyes of his and the barest of smiles before thanking her for the outing and bowing politely before her as befit a man of his time. This adorable moment was charged with the potential for romance with which the crea ...

'Sleepy Hollow' Renewed For Season 2 By Fox
Huffington Post - over 3 years
"Sleepy Hollow" has been renewed for a second season by Fox. The network announced the early renewal after "Sleepy Hollow" aired just three episodes. "Sleepy Hollow" is the first pickup of a new fall 2013 show. Season 2 will just be 13 episodes, like the first season. “The show has proven to be a risk well worth taking -- it's a conceptual blast unlike anything else on television and it all holds together with inventive writing and a fantastic cast,” Kevin Reilly, chairman of entertainment at Fox, said in statement. "I can’t wait for fans to experience what else is in store for this fall and even more of this wild ride into Season 2." The drama has been a ratings hit for Fox. It was the network's most successful fall drama premiere since the debut of "24" in 2001. Including DVR, VOD and online streaming, the series premiere of "Sleepy Hollow" drew an audience of more than 22 million. "Sleepy Hollow" tells the story of a resurrected Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) who teams up with a p ...

5 Surprisingly Great Things About Sleepy Hollow
Best Week Ever - over 3 years
So, you might be thinking: “Sleepy Hollow? Nope. Don’t need another old-timey-literature/modern mystery mashup in my life.” We thought that too, for a minute. And then we actually watched the first episode of the Fox drama. And yes, that is exactly what it is. But done in with the blend of scary and funny that gets us. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the writers behind the new Star Trek movies and Fringe, and Underworld director Len Wiseman seem to have got it right so far. Here are five things we didn’t realize we’d love about this admittedly kooky show: 1. Funny dialogue. Of course, Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison), who died in the Revolutionary War and just woke up in the 20th century, and Lt. Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie), who just saw a headless horseman murder her partner, have serious things to talk about. But then they also have time to discuss the prevalence of Starbucks in the world (“Is there some kind of law?” Ichabod wonders about the coffee chain; “Did you get up to pee?” sh ...

Who's Michael Fassbender New Rumored Lady?
Huffington Post - over 3 years
It seems that Michael Fassbender is taking a page out of Tiger Woods' book and dipping his toe into the Olympic dating pool. But instead of finding himself a skiing snow bunny, it appears that the 36-year-old actor might be dating heptathlete Louise Hazel. The pair was spotted dining in London with Fassbender's pal Bradley Cooper earlier this month before heading to The Bulgari Hotel in Kensington. The "Shame" star stayed at the hotel with the 27-year-old British Olympian until about 1 a.m. that evening, and sources are now coming forward with status updates on the supposed couple. "They are dating," an insider revealed to Us Weekly. "Michael has been talking to her while also filming 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' in Montreal. He comes back to London to see her." But it's still too soon to determine whether or not this is more than another one of his short-lived romances. The German-Irish actor was romantically tied to "X-Men: First Class" costar Zoe Kravitz prior t ...

Jonathan Kim: ReThink Review: 42 -- Which Side of History Are You On?
The Huffington Post - almost 4 years
42: the True Story of an American Legend is about Jackie Robinson, a four-sport phenom from UCLA who broke baseball's color barrier in 1947 and became the first African-American baseball player to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era. The danger of making a movie about a pioneer, hero, and legend like Robinson is the urge to whitewash (no pun intended) any of the controversial aspects of his life to protect his saintly status. And that's mostly what 42 does, while also portraying the president and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey, as the saint behind the saint. But while there's a lot in 42 that's corny, predictable, and almost Disney-ish, I'll admit that I got choked up a few times, because apparently, I get moved watching people learning not to be racists. Watch the trailer for 42 below. The film mostly follows the period when Rickey (played by Harrison Ford) brings Robinson (played by Chadwick Boseman) into the Dodgers' system to boos ...

What's The Word On '42'?
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Jackie Robinson was the ideal class act to break the barrier and become the first black player in Major League Baseball. Writer-director Brian Helgeland's Robinson biopic "42" is a class act itself, though not always an engaging act. It's such a familiar story that any faithful film biography almost inevitably will turn out predictable, even a bit routine. With an earnest performance by Chadwick Boseman as Robinson and an enjoyably self-effacing turn by Harrison Ford as Brooklyn Dodgers boss Branch Rickey, "42" hits every button you expect very ably. It riles with its re-creations of the heartless, ignorant racism to which Robinson was subjected. It uplifts with its depictions of Robinson's restraint and fortitude. It inspires with its glimpses of support and compassion from teammates and fans. Yet like a sleepy, low-scoring ballgame, "42" is not the jolt of energy and entertainment we wish it could be. Unlike No. 42 Robinson's daring on the base paths, "42" ...

Dwight Brown: 42
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Jackie Robinson's life is a lesson in courage. It's a sobering reminder of the barbaric cruelty of racism and an inspiring testament to those who rallied against it. This revealing film tracks his ascension from the Negro Leagues to Major League Baseball. And though you think you may know his story, you couldn't possibly fathom the horrors he endured to pave the way for black athletes. 42 vividly captures defining moments in the legendary baseball player's career. It spans 1945 to 1947, when he married his sweetheart, played with Dodger farm teams and eventually the Brooklyn Dodgers. Chronicling Robinson's entire life might have been a gargantuan task, and too lengthy an endeavor for one movie, but it's a pity the filmmakers didn't try. When this well-intentioned 2hr 18min bio-film comes to an abrupt end, you'll want more. You'll want to know about his pre- and post-career life. In 1945, when African American servicemen returned from World War II, they encountered an Am ...

'Woman Thou Art Loosed' off to strong box-office start
LATimes - almost 5 years
Codeblack Entertainment predicted last week that its “Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day” would open to strong returns in a limited national release. But the African American drama starring Blair Underwood, Sharon Leal and Nicole Beharie performed even better than its makers expected. Playing in 102 theaters, “Woman Thou Art Loosed” grossed an estimated $650,319, or $6,376 per screen. That’s more than first-place “The Hunger Games” generated per screen in its fourth weekend in wide release in 3,916 locations and better than any other film tracked last weekend by hollywood.com. The film was booked exclusively into AMC theaters under the exhibitor’s AMCi initiative for independent film. Because AMC theaters are not in optimum locations for African American moviegoers in Los Angeles, the bulk of the “Woman Thou Art Loosed” came from other big cities. “If you provide the right films in the right markets at the right times, the films will perform,” said Jeff Clanagan, Codeblack’s ...
