Prince William may have little to no Indian ancestry
Discover Magazine - over 3 years
Credit: Robert Payne The British media is blowing up today about Prince William’s Indian ancestry. Here’s a representative headline: Hunt is on in Gujarat for a distant cousin who shares Prince William’s Indian blood. The science here is straightforward. Apparently some British researchers found third cousins of Lady Diana Spencer. These individuals, like Diana, are descended from a woman named Eliza Kewark. This woman, William’s great, great, great, great, great grandmother was an ethnic Armenian who was resident in India. She was also the housekeeper of William’s ancestor Theodore Forbes, a Scottish merchant. At some point he sent his children by this woman to be educated in England, and there William’s ancestress married into native British lineages. Since Diana’s cousins share the same unbroken matriline as she does they by definition share an mtDNA lineage. As it happens these individuals carry haplgroup R30b, a very rare lineage found only in South Asia. But that’s not all. Di ...

‘Desperate Housewives’ ends 8-season run Sunday
The Palm Beach Post - almost 5 years
“Desperate Housewives” made suburbia sexy — and funny and murderous and touching — and it didn’t stop there. ABC’s series about the messy lives within Wisteria Lane’s tidy houses proved how low comedy and high drama can be a TV marriage made in heaven. It showed that women of a certain age — meaning over 25, in Hollywoodspeak — can be alluring and compelling. It introduced the witty voice of creator Marc Cherry, and reintroduced (with another ABC program, “Lost”) the concept of serialized storytelling at a time networks were stuffing viewers with a heavy diet of cheap reality and stolid crime-of-the-week procedurals. Now, eight years on, “Desperate Housewives” is signing off Sunday (9-11 p.m. EDT), and we must swap farewell air kisses with Teri Hatcher’s Susan, Felicity Huffman’s Lynette, Marcia Cross’ Bree and Eva Longoria’s Gabrielle. As the end nears, the foursome are keeping a secret that could put Bree away for a murder she didn’t commit. Susan is coping with the aftermat ...

Eva Longoria: No beef with 'Desperate Housewives' cast
CNN Enternament - The Marquee Bl - almost 5 years
No cat fights over here: Eva Longoria has said that despite the gossip, she doesn't have any beef with her “Desperate Housewives” co-stars. The 37-year-old actress set the record straight on "The Late Show With David Letterman" on Wednesday. "We all get along," Longoria said. "Everybody says that [we don't]." Speculation of discord between the actresses comes after Teri Hatcher's name was reportedly left off farewell cards that came with parting gifts the women recently gave their colleagues. "We gave the crew carry-on luggage that said, 'Takes us with you in all of your journeys,” confirmed Longoria. While it's not clear whether Hatcher, Longoria, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman and Vanessa Williams are actually friends off-air, at least most of the actresses made it to the end of the show without being snuffed out. “Yes! I forgot about. . . Nicollette Sheridan,” Longoria said to Letterman in response to his question about Sheridan moving on from the show. “She didn't g ...

On TV: Saying goodbye to ‘Desperate Housewives’
Nashua Telegraph - almost 5 years
After eight seasons of murder, a tornado, shootings, an airplane crash and numerous car accidents, the mayhem on Wisteria Lane will come to an end soon. A series finale of “Desperate Housewives” is set for 9-11 p.m. Sunday, May 13. It has already been a tumultuous season on “Desperate Housewives” both on-camera and behind the scenes. Mike Delfino (James Denton) died last month after being shot by a mobster just days after Denton testified at a trial pitting former cast member Nicollette Sheridan against show creator Marc Cherry and ABC. Sheridan sued, claiming her Edie Britt character was killed off in retaliation for her complaint that Cherry slapped her on set; the trial ended with a hung jury. The trial may have distracted from the fictional “Desperate Housewives” universe, but it shared many of the show’s hallmarks: a mix of drama, comedy and soapy shenanigans (observers in court said Sheridan mouthed “Bastard!” after Cherry finished his testimony). For viewers who drifted away fro ...

Scott Bakula Dishes on Desperate Housewives Finale, Cast Drama
The Inquisitor - almost 5 years
Scott Bakula may always be (to those of us of a certain age) the star of Quantum Leap, but the actor has taken on a big and important role for the swan song of TV game changer Desperate Housewives. In the final episodes of the beloved primetime soap, Bakula will be playing the defense attorney of longtime character Bree, who is in turn played by Marcia Cross. Yes, the show’s remaining episodes have a bit of courtroom drama- which is kinda funny, considering that the show itself has been itself a staple of entertainment news due to the ongoing real-life court drama between former Desperate Housewives star Nicollette Sheridan, previously against show creator Marc Cherry and mainly against the network. (Even more amusing is that Cherry might not have even been able to pen drama as drama-y as the multi-million dollar lawsuit brought by Sheridan against ABC for wrongful termination.) Bakula says the comparison isn’t lost on cast and crew, and that basically, everyone is a little sick ...

New 'Desperate Housewives' trial ahead
KXLY - almost 5 years
Actress Nicollette Sheridan's wrongful termination lawsuit against the studio that produces "Desperate Housewives" will be retried in September, a Los Angeles judge ordered this week. The first trial ended without a verdict as jurors deadlocked 8 to 4 in favor of the actress after three days of deliberations. They needed nine jurors to agree on a verdict. The judge set aside 12 days on her calendar for the jury trial, which is scheduled to begin on September 10. In her lawsuit, Sheridan claimed her character was killed -- and her acting job eliminated -- in retaliation for her complaining that show producer Marc Cherry hit her during a rehearsal for the ABC comedy-drama. Sheridan lawyer Mark Baute has previously said he did not expect an out-of-court settlement. "My view is that Disney is the unhappiest place on Earth, so why would there ever be a settlement offer?" Baute said. ABC lawyer Adam Levin said the retrial will be "far more narrow than the previous case" since the judge ...

Unlike the other main characters who had been killed off over the years on Desperate Housewives, Sheridan did not make an appearance in the show's final episode which aired in May 2012.
More Details Hide Details In 2010, Sheridan was cast in an untitled CBS comedy pilot as a mother who battles with her British ex-husband to get her teenaged daughter to stardom, but the show was not picked up. In September 2010, Sheridan starred in the Hallmark Channel film, Honeymoon for One, which was set in Ireland. The film premiered on the Hallmark Channel on 13 August 2011. In 2013, she starred and co-produced another Hallmark movie, called The Christmas Spirit. In an interview in November 2013, Sheridan announced that she was hoping to find a network for a half-hour comedy series that she is currently writing herself.
A further appeal made by Sheridan to the California Supreme Court was rejected in November 2012, A new trial based solely on the retaliation claim was set for December 2013, but this too was dismissed in October 2013 by a judge who stated that Sheridan should have exhausted her claims through a labor commissioner before pursuing a trial.

A retrial was scheduled for September 2012, but this was dismissed in August when the Los Angeles Court of Appeal determined that Sheridan had not been wrongfully fired.
More Details Hide Details The court rejected Sheridan's argument that ABC’s decision not to renew her option for another season was analogous to a violation of at-will employment. The court reasoned that unlike an at-will employee whose contract could remain in force indefinitely, Sheridan’s contract was for a set term that had expired and therefore ABC had not terminated her but simply chosen not to rehire her for another fixed-term contract. However, the court declared that Sheridan was free to file an amended lawsuit alleging that ABC retaliated against her for complaining about unsafe working conditions.
On 13 March 2012, the judge dismissed the battery charge against Cherry due to lack of evidence, and the lawsuit then focused solely on Sheridan's alleged wrongful termination by ABC.
More Details Hide Details Closing arguments were heard on 14 March 2012 and the jury began their deliberations. By 19 March 2012, the twelve members of the jury had failed to reach a verdict and a mistrial was declared.

In April 2010, Sheridan filed a $20 million lawsuit against Desperate Housewives creator/producer Marc Cherry and ABC Television, alleging that she was assaulted by Cherry on the set of the show and was then fired when she reported the alleged abuse to the network.
More Details Hide Details In her lawsuit, Sheridan claimed wrongful termination, assault and battery, gender violence, discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation and age, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. She also alleged that Cherry was abusive to other cast members and writers. ABC responded by stating that while they were unaware of this particular complaint, they had investigated similar claims made by Sheridan and reportedly found them to be without merit. The show's stars, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria, pledged their support to help Cherry in his battle against Sheridan's allegations.
