Plus-Size Designer Ashley Nell Tipton Wins 'Project Runway'
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Major congratulations are in order for Ashley Nell Tipton! The 24-year-old designer is this season's "Project Runway" winner.  LOVED the collection, #DesignerAshley! It perfectly embodied your heart! #ProjectRunway pic.twitter.com/LxcnqlxXl5 — Project Runway (@ProjectRunway) November 6, 2015   Any fan of the reality show looks forward to its finale, but this time around was especially exciting. Tipton is the first ever plus-size designer to win in the show's 14-season run.   Tipton, who was also the first to show a plus-size collection during the "Project Runway" show at New York Fashion Week, was a force to be reckoned with all season, garnering the support of the likes of Rachel Zoe and Nina Garcia along the way.  The news marks a truly exciting step toward equality. While many aspects of the industry have started to welcome body diversity, the runway is still a place where it is widely absent.  Now, thanks to Tipton, who said in the interview below ...

New York Fashion Week Fall 2014 Beauty Street Style: Banging Bobs From Day 2 (PHOTOS)
Huffington Post - about 3 years
On Day 2 of New York Fashion Week, we saw more colors and smarter coats. But as for beauty street style, we still had our eyes on the hair. This time around, bob hairstyles were BIG. From wavy to bone-straight to asymmetrical, these mid-length looks added to already fierce outfits. Darker hair colors, like jet black and dark mahogany, were present on "It" Girls like Lucky magazine editor-in-chief Eva Chen and The Man Repeller's Leandra Medine. Meanwhile, some bobs were graced with a combination of tones, as seen on Marie Claire's creative director Nina Garcia. Look below to see some of our favorite 'dos from Day 2 at Fashion Week, all shot by HuffPost Style photographer and photo editor Raydene Salinas. Kerry Washington On 'Project Runway': 'Scandal' Actress To Guest Judge For Season Finale
Huffington Post - over 3 years
NEW YORK — There was a glamorous whiff of scandal – make that "Scandal" – at "Project Runway" on Friday, with Emmy-nominated actress Kerry Washington making an appearance as guest judge for the reality show's season finale at New York Fashion Week. Washington, who plays a wily political strategist in her red-hot series, is a fast-growing fashion luminary as well – a development she described as an "occupational hazard," though a happy one. "I've had to learn about fashion because as an actor, it's such a huge part of the marketing," Washington said in a pre-show interview, dressed in a flouncy floral Stella McCartney dress. "I'm the daughter of a professor, and an A student, and I approach it as a student. I do my research. I stay informed. I communicate with the designers." Washington joined regular judges Heidi Klum, Nina Garcia and Zac Posen at the Lincoln Center tents to watch eight final contestants display their wares. But actually, there remain only three finalists. Their names ...

PIC: Nina Garcia Reveals Must-Have Fashion Week Accessory
Huffington Post - over 3 years
We love learning about all the hottest trends during New York Fashion Week, whether we're focusing on a silhouette, a color or a must-have accessory. This season, the look of the moment is super sleek: Google Glass. Nina Garcia of "Project Runway" and Marie Claire fame will wear the high-tech specs throughout the industry's biggest events, Women's Wear Daily reveals, broadcasting her enviable perspective across the Internet. As dorky as Google Glass may seem, we're not terribly surprised by its high-fashion perch -- after all, the tool debuted during New York Fashion Week last year, when Diane von Fursteberg accessorized her wrap-dressed runway with Google Glass. We're excited that fashion fans around the globe can literally adopt an insider's perspective into a notoriously exclusive world. With Glass' technology, we'll be able to attend parties and presentations with Nina. Hopefully, this haute partnership will encourage Google to manufacture trendier frames... PH ...

Tom Morris: The Philosopher King of Reality TV
Popeater - almost 4 years
I've been watching too much reality TV. Well, maybe you have too. And I just had a dream the other night that, as a public philosopher, I was hosting a new show. Then, I realized that if it was a hit, I could have a huge new empire of reality TV shows on my hands. Here's what I mean. My first dream show is an inevitable twist, from my point of view, on the standard HGTV real estate series: Million Dollar Open House... With a Philosopher: This show offers the ultimate opportunity to think through a major New York City real estate purchase. I'll co-host open house extravaganzas at Manhattan's finest apartments. The other host, a licensed real estate broker, can talk to potential buyers about square footage, neighborhood amenities, and price. I'll help them reflect on image, convenience, wealth, and the importance of location in America -- all connected, of course, with meaning of life issues. The philosopher is in. And, if this is a success, there are other, even more exci ...

Christina Anderson: I'm A Fashionista And I Refuse To Shop
Huffington Post - over 4 years
When I moved to New York City in 1999, I was just starting in the fashion industry and making peanuts. Nina Garcia, one of my first bosses, asked me during my interview to become her assistant if "Twenty was OK?" I said, "Twenty dollars an hour?" Her response was firm: Twenty thousand dollars a year. You can imagine the pittance that I took home every two weeks; my parents very kindly supplemented my income and my best friend lived with me (he actually slept in a closet -- not uncommon for new residents to the Big Apple). But all the same, I'd find myself up at 5am on my way to the latest Manolo Blahnik or Fendi sample sales, where I'd empty my bank account. Thankfully, I didn't have a credit card at the time or I'd be accruing debt faster than you can say "in over my head." Was I in over my head? Thanks to the parental dole, no. Was I financially irresponsible and naive? Definitely. I went on to marry a very patient banker who laughed kindly when I'd call him tearfully fro ...

And who better to join the judges panel than new mom Hilary Duff, who sat alongside Klum, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia to choose the winning pieces. Selecting one girl and one boy outfit, judges crowned Sonji Williams for her punk-inspired fleece jacket and pant set and Christopher Palu, for his sweet ruffled dress and blazer ensemble. “This Project Runway episode was really special to me because, for the past year, I’ve put so much of my passion, mom know-how and design experience to work creating an exciting collection,” Klum says. “I’m truly proud of some of the stand-out pieces that the designers created.” Love the adorable runway ...

PHOTOS: Did Jennifer Hudson Outshine Heidi Klum?
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Confession: we haven't seen "Project Runway" in a while, limiting our consumption to the rare scandals (contestants fleeing, bullying, etc) that crop up each season. But today we found a completely positive, uplifting reason to tune in: Jennifer Hudson joined the judges for today's live runway show and she looked a-mah-zing. Like, so amazing she blew Heidi Klum out of the water. How is it possible that the "American Idol" alum outshone the telegenic supermodel under the bright lights of the runway? By dressing to perfection. After the models walked the catwalk in the three finalists' collections, Jennifer, Heidi Klum, Nina Garcia and Michael Kors posed for photos on the runway. On the left was Heidi in a seriously plunging, cut-out sequin gown (perfect for daytime, right); on the right, Nina in an elegant but restrained LBD embellished with crystal detailing; and in the center, Jennifer in a head-to-toe aqua jumpsuit and matching blazer. Her figure looked amazing, t ...

Courtney Cachet: Trending This Week: Nina Garcia's NYFW Playlist
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Photo: Xavi Menos Welcome to New York Fashion Week! Where the energy is frenetic, the fashions are fabulous and nobody (and I mean nobody) touches the bread basket. If you don't have the job, the clout or the well-connected friends to get you a coveted ticket to a show or two, at least now have the music you might hear. Kind of like staring out the window at that fabulous rooftop party at the building next door, but not really. Along with her loyal cult-like Twitter fans, Nina Garcia has teamed up with Spotify and created the ultimate music playlist just in time for New York Fashion Week. Garcia, fashion editor for Marie Claire magazine and a judge on Project Runway, includes a hip variety with everything from Jay-Z to Lana Del Ray. The basic vibe is sultry and chic and totally what you expect it to be. You definitely won't find "Somebody That I Used To Know" -- whew! Music and fashion always seem to go together, so this collaboration makes a lot of sense. Models d ...
