'13 Hours' and 'Cartel Land': Cries and Whispers
Huffington Post - about 1 year
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi and Cartel Land, two current films about vigilante actions, share common roots and concerns, but end up worlds apart. 13 Hours, is a political screed told through the eyes of six secret mercenaries, an implausible Benghazi for Beginners, that often ignores the findings of eight Congressional Subcommittee Hearings, jettisons inconvenient conclusions and blames the local C.I.A. chief and "Harvard- and Yale-educated" bureaucrats running our government. Cartel Land is a more fact-based, sobering documentary that examines anti-drug cartel citizens group actions on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border. Director Michael Bay's 13 Hours purports to be the story of "the secret soldiers of Benghazi," the ex-armed forces shady security contractors' efforts to fight off Libyan insurgents' attacks on the U.S. Ambassadorial staff. "When everything went wrong, six men had the courage to do what was right," proudly announces the theatrical release poster. ...

<i>Law and Order: SVU</i> Season 15, Episode 10 Recap: Detective Benson Confronts Her Attacker
Huffington Post - about 3 years
Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 15, Episode 10 of NBC's Law and Order: SVU, titled "Psycho Therapist." And just as I was getting used to Wednesday nights free of semi-fictionalized sex crimes -- playing Settlers of Catan, learning how to make a soufflé, effectively keeping my nail polish chip-free -- Law and Order: SVU jumps right back into its arguably most upsetting story yet: Olivia's assault and kidnapping. In case you missed it, Liv was kidnapped by William Lewis (Pablo Schreiber), who was set free after a mistrial, at which point he broke into her apartment. He proceeded to torture her for four days, even making her watch as he raped the mother of his former attorney, and kidnapping her to a beach house where she eventually escapes and beats the living daylights out of him before calling the police. In this episode, Benson finally faces her attacker in court in what predictably becomes one of the most infuriatingly obnoxious scenes of the season. Seriously, ...

Why Was <i>Law & Order SVU</i>'s Benson Spared This Violation?
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Like pretty much every woman I know, I have a major crush on Olivia Benson, the character inhabited by the subtly sexy Mariska Hargitay. Benson is one of the most badass cops on television, and she's a woman, who will pistol whip perpetrators of the city's most "heinous crimes" without batting a perfectly kohl-pencil-lined eye. But what also makes her unmistakably "good police," is her ability to empathize with the victims of sex crimes, never second-guess or patronize them, and certainly never slut-shame victims of sexual assault. So, like most of my woman-crushes, I pretty much want to BE Olivia Benson. She's self-sufficient, completely fulfilled by her career, and in the past few seasons has had relationships with men (yes, Liv dates! and currently is in a relationship with dreamboat Brian Cassidy, played by Dean Winters). I'm not saying she's without her issues: she's had a rough childhood, being the child of rape, a fact that compelled her career to give voices to the victims o ...

The Race To Save Benson On 'SVU'
Huffington Post - over 3 years
"Law &amp; Order: SVU" has put Detective Olivia Benson's life in danger, leaving viewers to champion "Save Benson." The Season 14 finale ended with Benson (Mariska Hargitay) at gunpoint, being held by William Lewis ("Orange Is The New Black" star Pablo Schreiber). Hargitay signed on for the new season of "SVU," so it's safe to say Benson will live ... but whether she makes it out of the situation unscathed is the real question. Benson's captor is known for raping and torturing his victims over a period of time. "I want to live," she says in the promo above. Hargitay shared the promo on Twitter with a special message. HOLY SH!?!$&amp;@!?%€£¥T!!! “@SVUWritersRoom: It's here. #SaveBenson http://t.co/85ScTTS0qH” — Mariska Hargitay (@Mariska) August 23, 2013 "Law &amp; Order: SVU" Season 15 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.

Jesse Lava: What Orange Is the New Black Gets Right About the Prison System -- And What It Leaves Out
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Shows revolving around prisons and law enforcement have traditionally sensationalized crime and dehumanized criminals. Think Lockup, CSI, Oz, Cops, the Law &amp; Order franchise -- there are good guys and bad guys, and the bad guys are really bad. But TV is changing. Pockets of programming are becoming sophisticated and analytical when it comes to crime, The Wire being perhaps the foremost example of a show that indicts our country's dysfunctional criminal justice system more than the individuals ensnared in it. Netflix's new series Orange Is the New Black is a welcome addition to this trend. It isn't as gritty or nakedly political as The Wire, but it has no fear about revealing that the good guys aren't always good, the bad guys aren't always bad, and the system is setting all of them up to fail. Created by Jenji Kohan (Weeds), Orange Is the New Black centers on an educated, cosmopolitan woman from New York City with the über-white name of Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling). ...

Meet The Real Piper Chapman
Huffington Post - over 3 years
She certainly doesn't look like a former prisoner at first glance -- Piper Kerman resembles your average businesswoman, nondescript, clad in a suit. But when she starts talking you realize that there's so much more below the surface, that there are stories she can tell that would blow your mind. She and Netflix are doing just that with "Orange Is The New Black," a TV series based on her memoir of the same name. Brought to television by "Weeds" mastermind Jenji Kohan, "OITNB" follows Piper Chapman (played by Taylor Schilling) as she navigates her way through a 15-month prison sentence. She's a fish out of water, big time, and we get to watch her succeed and fall on her face as she morphs into a different person. HuffPost TV spoke to the real-life Piper on a press tour in Toronto, where she came clean about how much of "OITNB" is real, the most harrowing aspects of staying in prison, and whether or not she ever talks to "Alex" anymore. Pablo Schreiber: “I’m the most hated guy on Twitter right now”
Salon.com - over 3 years
Any semi-regular TV viewer probably knows Pablo Schreiber as “that tall, good-looking guy who played that guy in that thing once.” The physical amalgamation of Luke Wilson and Christian Bale (with a dash of half-brother Liev’s genes thrown in for good measure), Schreiber has been making the Broadway and cable TV circuit for years, earning raves for his turn as earnest dock worker Nick Sobotka in "The Wire," as well as his performance as Demetri “The Sarge” Ravitch in the seventh season of "Weeds." Since the premiere of the new Netflix series "Orange Is the New Black," however, Schreiber, who plays prison guard George “Pornstache” Mendez, has achieved a new level of (not always positive) recognition. As the pernicious Pornstache (so named for the character’s John Holmes-esque facial coiffure), Schreiber plays a bona fide sociopath who extorts, harasses and assaults the female inmates at every turn. Like the sadist that he is, Pornstache derives enormous satisfaction from inflicting pai ...

Netflix Series Renewed Before It Premieres
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Netflix obviously has faith in "Orange Is the New Black," having renewed the dramedy for a second season before Season 1 has even premiered. Netflix confirms that "Orange" has been picked up for another 13 episodes, joining previous Netflix successes "Hemlock Grove," "House of Cards" and "Lilyhammer," which have all been given second seasons. Netflix has also reportedly been exploring the possibility of more "Arrested Development," despite previously downplaying the idea. “Jenji and her team have produced a phenomenal series and we’re eager to get a second season to our viewers,” Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix, said in a statement. “I am thrilled that Netflix has extended my sentence,” said series creator and executive producer Jenji Kohan. “We’re enormously proud of the brilliant work of Jenji, the cast and the entire production team,” said Kevin Beggs, president, Lionsgate Television Group, “and we’re delighted about this early seco ...
