Concept of Creative Schools Taking Hold in California
Huffington Post - about 1 year
When it is becoming clear that creativity and innovation are the benchmarks of the new, global, knowledge economy, California is emerging as a leader in the effort to reinvent education. Last year, the California Arts Council received a one-time $5 million increase in its 2014-15 budget, bringing its total support from the general fund to $6 million. This year, Governor Brown signed a state budget that included a $7.1 million permanent increase in general fund support for the Arts Council, and the Council in turn, has funded more communities throughout the state, and, together with the California Department of Education, helped craft a "Blueprint for Creative Schools," which eventually will be adopted by all California schools. This is not just another government report to gather dust. It is a well thought-out set of recommendations and an action-oriented directive. The Blueprint has recommendations that touch on every aspect of teaching and learning in all K-12 schools. But w ...

Maureen O'Hara: The Roads to Recognition, Co-Starring Lillian Gish and Robert Altman
Huffington Post - over 1 year
"This is what it's all about." -- Harvey Weinstein to Benedict Cumberbatch and director Morten Tyldum on leaving the Governors Awards, November 9, 2014 * * * The midnight blue of the bracing Idaho sky was the color of her beaded gown, reflecting the sparkle in her green eyes. The legendary red hair was perfectly coiffed; the tasteful diamond bracelets added a touch of glamour. The high-powered audience, gathered in the heart of Hollywood at the beginning of awards season, suddenly quieted as the evening began with a film tribute honoring the ravishingly beautiful actress who never gave less than a perfect performance in her seven-decade career. Martin Scorsese defined her impact: "She started at the very top, at age 18, starring with and working with the best and most brilliant-- only to remain there." After Liam Neeson reflected on his infatuation in seeing THE QUIET MAN, and Clint Eastwood, as a Universal contract player, told of his attempts to get close to LADY GODIVA, ...

Patrick Wayne Germond: Fast and Furious explanation has holes
Craig Daily Press - about 5 years
Mendacity, meaning to purposely mislead people, is the perfect word to describe the Fast & Furious gun running scandal. As it stands now, the federal government isn’t going to answer any more questions concerning the matter until an Inspector General report comes out in three months. We know the F&F program allowed the purchase of more than 2,000 guns — mostly battle rifles — by straw buyers here in the U.S. Many of these guns are now in the hands of this continent’s most deadly criminals — the Mexican drug cartels. In hundreds of cases, the straw buyers couldn’t afford the guns, so the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms used taxpayer money to buy the guns for criminal insurgents.
