Will Ferrell Pulls Out Of Ronald Reagan Biopic Amid Alzheimer's Controversy
Huffington Post - 10 months
The world will never see Will Ferrell play Ronald Reagan.  Depending on your political leanings and penchant for Ferrell's brand of humor, this news might be met with a welcome relief or seen as an unfortunate concession to political correctness.  On Wednesday, Variety exclusively announced that Ferrell was attached to star in "Reagan," a Black Listed script penned by Mike Rosolio about the former president's second term in office, where he reportedly began to experience the symptoms of dementia. The plot centers on a young intern who must convince Reagan that he is an actor playing the president in a movie.   If Ferrell doing his Reagan best wasn't enough to elicit the ire of right-wingers, the comedic take on Alzheimer's disease pushed the detractors over the edge. According to Page Six, Ferrell is "not pursuing this project" amid the controversy. "Reagan" was just "one of a number of scripts that had been submitted to Will Ferrell which he had considered," said a spoke ...

You're taking care of someone with Alzheimer's, but who is taking care of you?
LATimes - 10 months
After Ronald Reagan became America's most recognizable Alzheimer's patient, well-meaning friends, relatives and even strangers would routinely stop his daughter, Patti Davis, to ask: "How is he doing?" Only occasionally would someone ask, "And how are you doing?" It's understandable, of course,...

Amazon Tightens Rules On Hoverboards Because Of Those Pesky Fires
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Amazon has removed many, but not all, brands of hoverboards from its website following reports of the popular Christmas present catching fire.  Without any public announcement, models of the self-balancing scooters from makers like Swagway and Phunkeeduck have disappeared from the online retailer. Hoverboards from brands like Jetson and Razor remain for sale.  On Friday, Amazon asked Swagway to provide documentation that its boards' batteries and chargers meet safety standards, according to Swagway. The company told HuffPost that its boards passed those tests and that it has sent proof to Amazon. "As safety is on the forefront for Swagway, we applaud Amazon for taking these steps to weed out the low-quality boards," said spokeswoman Lauren Song. A Musical Look At The Women Of The White House As You've Never Seen Them
Huffington Post - over 1 year
American politics can make for epic theater, as evidenced by Broadway's smash hit, "Hamilton." Now, a new Off-Broadway musical is putting a quiet, satirical spin on a less-heralded side of our nation's heritage: the complex, often fraught relationships between first ladies and their daughters. Michael John LaChiusa's "First Daughter Suite," which runs through Nov. 22 at New York's Public Theater, tells the story of the lives of the female inhabitants of the White House, young and old, to a hauntingly operatic score. The daughters of Richard M. Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Gerald R. Ford, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush are the stars of what LaChiusa describes as a two-act "fantasia" divided into four fanciful, if zany, sung-through vignettes, each with its own unique tone. LaChiusa, 53, wrote "First Daughter Suite" as a sequel of sorts to "First Lady Suite," his 1993 musical that dramatized the lives of Mamie Eisenhower, Eleanor Roosevelt and Jacqueline Kennedy. As with that earlier ...

Theater: Amy Carter Gets Her Closeup In New Musical 'First Daughter Suite'
Huffington Post - over 1 year
FIRST DAUGHTER SUITE ** 1/2 out of **** PUBLIC THEATER Every current composer of musicals worth his salt gets compared to Stephen Sondheim sooner or later. The talented Michael John LaChiusa earns the comparison more than most for one unfortunate reason: like Sondheim, many of his musicals get staged, earn acclaim and then slip away too soon. Again and again, we see Sondheim shows "rediscovered" upon revival, becoming the hits and and gaining a place in the repertory they always deserved. Sondheim's shows aren't "difficult;" we're just slow to catch up with them. The same holds for LaChiusa. Hello Again is a lovely song cycle that looks wiser every time we return to it. The Wild Party is going to be revived on Broadway any day now and prove -- a la Kander & Ebb's best work -- to be a smash hit not despite but because of its wicked dark wit. (Frankly, it should have been a hit the first time around.) Maybe it falls between the cracks, but Marie Christine would thrive if it co ...

'Trouble In Toyland' Report 2013: Public Interest Research Group Names Dangerous Toys For Kids
Huffington Post - about 3 years
WASHINGTON (AP) — Toy recalls for excessive lead and other hazards are down this year, but consumer advocates warn that potential dangers to children remain on store shelves. Several toys with high lead levels or toys that could cause young children to choke were found at major retailers and discount stores in the last few months, the U.S. Public Interest Research Group said Tuesday. The consumer safety group analyzed 50 toys for its annual report. Violations were found in fewer than a dozen, including a Captain America toy shield and play jewelry. PIRG said the Captain America Soft Shield purchased at Toys R Us had 29 times the legal limit of lead. A package of toy jewelry rings from Dollar General tested positive for lead twice the legal limit, said the report. Small parts that could pose a choking risk were found in six toys that the group said did not carry the necessary warning labels for children. PIRG said three toys were too loud and exceeded federal limits on decibels: two ...

Art Of Indie Cover Design
Huffington Post - over 3 years
First published at IndieReader.com With self-publishing settling into the mainstream, fierce competition has upped the ante for indie authors. The finest books boast strong, well-written stories. But to rise to the top, to gain traction with readers, even the best book needs a dynamic cover. Recognizing this, savvy indies invest time and energy into creating striking cover designs. As a result, it’s becoming nearly impossible to differentiate between self- and traditionally published books. “I'm blown away by the great covers on books by indie authors,” says Smashwords founder Mark Coker. “The quality of cover design today is head and shoulders above what it was just a few years ago.” A book’s cover is the first thing a potential reader sees and it can make a lasting impression. “Our brains are wired to process images faster than words,” Coker explains. “When we see an image, it makes us feel something.” A great cover, he says, can “help the reader instantly recognize ...

Reagan's Daughter Pens Lesbian Novel
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
She may have received a lukewarm reception from publishers, but Patti Davis has been undeterred about getting her new novel -- centered on a lesbian love story -- out into the world. Davis, the 60-year-old daughter of former President Ronald Reagan, has self-published her new work, entitled Till Human Voices Wake Us, as an e-book. It is currently available online for $2.99. On Amazon, the book description: In the empty days after her son's death, left alone in her grief by her husband, Isabelle Berendon falls in love with the unlikeliest person in the world: her sister-in-law. Though some of Davis' earlier works have been based on her life and that of her famous family, she told the New York Post that this new book is entirely a work of fiction. "This is not me. None of it is autobiographical,” she said. According to the Independent, Davis had a hard time convincing publishers to take on her new novel -- so much so that she eventually decided to self-publi ...

‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ tour test run June 26
ajc - over 4 years
The folks who recently started a “Walking Dead” tour are experimenting with a “Real Housewives of Atlanta” tour for the evening of Tuesday, June 26. And since they are not affiliated with the Bravo show, they can’t call it “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” tour. Instead, they dubbed it the “Keeping it Real” tour. (You can get more details and buy tickets here.) This is going to be far different from the “Walking Dead” (er… Big Zombie) tour. It will run from 7 to 10 p.m., and include three complimentary cocktails and appetizers in three locations for a $60 fee. Tour creator Patti Davis said they’ve gotten cooperation from Peter Thomas, the husband of cast member Cynthia Bailey, so there will be a stop at his lounge/bar BarOne in Grant Park, plus a visit to Cynthia’s modeling agency, the Bailey Agency. Cynthia won’t be there, though, and she isn’t sure if Peter will be at BarOne either. She said she’d love to visit TAGS Boutique, Kandi Burruss’ clothing store in Smyrna but …
