Banks & Steelz unites Interpol's Paul Banks and Wu-Tang Clan mastermind RZA
LATimes - 6 months
On paper, the collaboration between the two musicians who are releasing their first album as Banks & Steelz seems a little ridiculous.  One of them, RZA, is best known as a hip-hop producer, rapper and cofounder of New York collective Wu-Tang Clan. The other, Paul Banks, co-founded the New York...

Other Voices Resonate in Dingle
Huffington Post - about 1 year
It would take you a long time to get to Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland and the obstacles on your way would give you the impression of experiencing a modern version of the Stations of the Cross. Storm Desmond, the train or the plane, and then the bus until you arrive at the far end of Kerry... But the journey would be worth it. Nothing is too big to prevent you from claiming your love to Folk music and especially at Other Voices festival which offers a unique setting to enjoy the music of rising artists and of already established stars in a cozy, refreshing place. Other Voices is a free festival, set in Dingle since 2002, it is designed to give a various range of artists a chance to perform. Because it is free and not taken into a marketing strategy of bringing the biggest amount of people possible, it proposes an alternative musical scene, offering, each year, a regeneration, a rebirth to folk music. On stage, artists play in front of small audiences, of all age and from all ...

Stereo IQ: Interpol's Turn On The Bright Lights Turns Ten
Huffington Post - about 4 years
By John Dickinson I always thought Turn On The Bright Lights had a pulse. A sort of life that existed far beyond the tonal baritone of Paul Banks' melancholy pleas or bassist Carlos Dengler's emphatic octave jumps. It existed in the way a person exists. It wasn't just a few tracks thrown together by four big Joy Division fans (as they are so often labeled) -- it was so much more: years of preparation and revision toiled by four New York City kids. And in 2002 those four kids succeeded in creating life. Vital signs are found in the sputtering breaths of "Stella", the anxious rhythmic patterns of "Say Hello To The Angels" and the cohesive musical strategy that binds them in perpetuity. It's remarkable how in the decade where full length records grew foreign to most, where people could download individual songs without having to listen to an entire CD, Interpol was more concerned with birthing a story than $.99 song sales. Fast forward ten years: people are buying viny ...

FYF Fest 2012: Refused, Wild Flag, M83, Yeasayer booked
LATimes - over 4 years
Now in its ninth year, the independent-focused FYF Fest is returning to the Los Angeles State Historic Park and for the first time since moving downtown will expand from one to two days. The lineup for the Labor Day weekend fest is an adventurous mix of acts young and old, leaning heavily on punk and veterans of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Top-billed artists this year include the reunited Swedish punk band Refused, reunited local rock band Redd Kross, the trippy M83, indie-punk supergroup Wild Flag and electro-soul artist James Blake.  Once again the FYF Fest is working in conjunction with Coachella promoter Goldenvoice. This marks the fourth straight year that FYF has been stationed at the Chinatown-adjacent State Historic Park, also the site of this summer's dance-focused Hard Summer. While FYF has long specialized in promoting punk and noise shows in and around Echo Park, this year's lineup was first unveiled on Santa Monica's non-profit KCRW-FM, a sign of FYF's ...

Paul Banks Prepares EP
Clash - almost 5 years
Interpol's Paul Banks has completed his new EP 'Julian Plenti Lives...' due for release on June 11th. Paul Banks has an alter ego. 'Julian Plenti' is an outlet for his solo material, with the frontman previously using the name for his generally well received 2009 collection 'Julian Plenti Is... Skyscraper'. Using his own name, Banks has decided to reference the solo moniker for a new EP. 'Julian Plenti Lives...' was completed recently, with Matador set to usher the five song release onto record shelves on June 11th. Extremely varied, the EP seemingly focuses on the new track 'Summertime Is Coming'. Ending with another original - this time the instrumental 'Cavern Worship' - it's the more left field choices which caught our eye. Paul Banks intends to cover the theme from cult 80s flick 'Running Man' as well as J Dilla's classic joint 'Mythsysizer'. Also tackling Frank Sinatra's 'I'm a Fool to Want You' the five track EP will be given a limited edition run of 1,500 CD ...

In an October 2012 interview, former supermodel Helena Christensen described Banks as her boyfriend and said that she was often traveling to Panama to watch Banks surf on a volcanic beach far away from everything.

As of August 15th, 2012, it would appear that Banks laid to rest the use of the alter-ego, "Julian Plenti" as on the official site of InterpolNYC, the name is referred to as "ditched".
More Details Hide Details Also, the domain URL for the Julian Plenti website is as of this time deactivated and all mentions of the character removed from Banks' official Twitter account. During Interpol's early years Banks typically played a black Les Paul Custom guitar. He then started using a Fender Jaguar and a Gibson Flying V (for a time with the word "breasts" spelled out in white tape on it) for songs from Our Love to Admire and his Les Paul for songs from Antics and Turn on the Bright Lights, although some songs like "Obstacle 1" were played with Banks' Fender Jaguar because of the impracticality of switching and songs like "Mammoth" were used by his Les Paul for the same reason. Paul Banks did use his Fender Jaguar as his primary guitar for the end leg of the Our Love to Admire tour and was also seen using a Gibson ES-135 for songs such as "Not Even Jail", but since the 2010 tour leg, he has not been since using the Jaguar or Gibson ES-135 and has only been since using his traditional Les Paul, though the Flying V can be seen in the music video for Barricade with the tape no longer present. His Gibson ES-135 however, was his primary guitar during his live performances as his alter-ego Julian Plenti. Recently during live shows of his solo work he has been playing a Fender Stratocaster with two humbucker pickups.
His second full-length studio album, Banks was announced on 6 August 2012 and will be released on 22 October 2012.

    Age 18
Banks joined the band in the Summer of 1997 when he ran into Daniel Kessler, whom he had met on a study abroad program in Paris.
More Details Hide Details When first asked to join Interpol, Banks initially refused, but after listening to the type of music they were writing, Banks joined. Banks' voice, singing style and lyrics have been strongly compared to, most notably, Ian Curtis of Joy Division. A journalist from NME magazine even staged a joke at one of Interpol's concerts, trying to summon the spirit of Ian Curtis with a ouija board and make him say that Banks owed him. But Banks protests that the comparison merely forces influences onto the band in an effort to describe their music style. He has also stated that he does not try to emulate his greatest influences because he thinks he cannot live up to them ("I would never try to sing like Frank Black or Kurt Cobain because you just can't do it").
