Woman Arrested For Vandalizing Washington Landmark With Green Paint
Huffington Post - over 3 years
WASHINGTON -- A woman was arrested Monday after green paint was found splattered inside two chapels at the Washington National Cathedral, and police were investigating her in connection with two similar incidents on the National Mall, authorities said. Jiamei Tian, 58, was arrested inside the cathedral shortly after the paint was found and charged with defacing property, police and cathedral officials said. Investigators were hoping to question her about the vandalism on the Mall, including at the Lincoln Memorial, but a language barrier was complicating those efforts, Assistant D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said soon after the arrest. It was not immediately clear if Tian had an attorney. Police believed she was homeless. No motive was given. Green paint was found early Friday morning on the Lincoln Memorial, and symbols were found painted in green later Friday on another statue on the Mall. The Lincoln Memorial was closed temporarily but reopened later Frida ...

Terry Tempest Williams: A Generational Stance on Behalf of the Arctic Ocean
Huffington Post - over 4 years
In less than a week, the Obama administration may well approve Shell Oil's plans to do exploratory drilling in America's Arctic Ocean. It would be an unmitigated disaster because there is no proven way to clean up an oil spill in the harshness of Arctic conditions. It should be stopped. We must resist and insist that President Obama and Secretary Salazar deny this drilling permit to Shell Oil on two points: The Department of Interior has refused to issue an environmental impact statement to access the risks, impacts, and potential damages that Shell Oil's drilling plan might have on the fragile and complex ocean environment and its inhabitants. Instead, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement has issued what is called a "Finding of No Significant Impact. This is a lie. 2) Shell Oil has not been able to produce a comprehensive strategy or plan of action, by their own admission, outlining their what they would do should an oil spill occur in Arctic w ...

Despite the heat, visitors turn out for Independence Day celebrations in DC
Fox News - over 4 years
One word could describe visitors to the Capitol Fourth Concert Wednesday night: sweaty. Despite high temperatures and the threat of thunderstorms, thousands of visitors from across the continent took part in Independence Day celebrations in the nation's capital. The Carter family from El Paso, Texas, set up lawn chairs facing the Washington Monument at 8:30 a.m. By 1 p.m., they still were stretched out in the shade of a tall tree, armed with umbrellas and water for the anticipated grueling sun that would steal their shade in the midafternoon. At 4 p.m. a youth group from a church in New Brunswick, Canada, sang and played guitar in Franklin Square with a sign on their guitar case reading, "Need a dollar, take a dollar." They planned to go to the fireworks on the National Mall as a break from a week of service work visiting Washington's elderly and homeless. The National Park Service urged attendees to use public transportation to avoid traffic during the holiday. Unlike i ...

Shrouded In Mystery: Investigators Work to Identify Skeletal Remains
Ballston-Virgina Square Patch - over 4 years
His body was found in a wooded area in Fairfax in 2006—the only clues about his past life were the clothes on his back, some writings from a makeshift camp and a broken rosary. The case of this still-unidentified man is one of three cold cases highlighted Thursday in Manassas at a press conference hosted by the office of Virginia’s Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Leah Bush. Also present were three gray "facial approximation" busts of the unidentified remains, made in hopes that someone, somewhere will recognize the faces and provide answers. Cold Case #1: Older White Male in Fairfax The skeletal remains found in Fairfax on April 6, 2006 are thought to be that of an older white man, between 5 feet 5 inches and 5 feet 11 inches tall. The remains were discovered near Interstate 66 eastbound, close to Route 7100 (now Route 286) in Fairfax by a man looking for deer bones, said Lucy Caldwell, public information officer for the Fairfax County Police Department. “We want families ...
