Gas tanker attacked near key shipping lane off Yemen
Yahoo News - 4 months
By Jonathan Saul LONDON (Reuters) - Unknown assailants attacked a gas tanker off the coast of Yemen close to the Bab al-Mandab waterway in the latest flare up in an area through which much of the world's oil passes, shipping and security officials said on Wednesday. The incident, the first attack on a commercial ship since July, followed missile attacks in recent weeks on military craft, including U.S. navy vessels, which were launched from Yemen that had already raised risks for merchant shipping. Shipping group Teekay said its LNG (liquefied natural gas) tanker Galicia Spirit "experienced a suspected piracy attack whilst off the coast of Yemen" on Oct. 25.

Building peaceful, just and inclusive societies in an increasingly urbanised world
Huffington Post - 4 months
On the left is Karial slum, one of the urban slums in Dhaka. One billion people-one out of three urban dwellers-are living in slum conditions (UN Photo/Kibae Park) This month, decision-makers from all over the world will gather in Quito, Ecuador, at the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) to galvanise global commitment to the sustainable development of towns and cities and agree on a new global strategy around urbanization. Global attention to development challenges in urban areas is not new; yet, with the exception of a target to improve the lives of some 100 million slum dwellers (under Goal 7 on environmental sustainability), the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were mute on the role of cities in our sustainable future. Despite the growing nature of urban conflict and violence, urbanization was also not addressed in the 2015 reviews of the UN Peacebuilding Architecture and Peace Operations. Exclusive: Maersk Oil eyes Shell's North Sea assets ahead of spin-off
Yahoo News - 5 months
By Ron Bousso and Jonathan Saul LONDON (Reuters) - A.P. Moller-Maersk is in talks to buy a portfolio of North Sea assets from Royal Dutch Shell as the Danish group considers adding scale to its oil and gas business ahead of a planned spin off, banking sources said. Maersk announced on Thursday a major overhaul that will see it focus on its core transport and logistics businesses, while looking at options for its energy division within 24 months that could include a joint venture, merger or listing. Maersk has said over the past year that it planned to invest several billions of dollars to expand its oil operations, although it is now likely to face bigger financial pressures given a rout in earnings from shipping, weak oil prices and the loss of a major oil contract in Qatar.

Exclusive: Iran set to be hooked up to global banks in weeks
Yahoo News - about 1 year
By Jonathan Saul LONDON (Reuters) - Iran is set to re-engage with the banking world within weeks as international lenders link up with their Iranian counterparts using global transaction network SWIFT, Iran's Middle East Bank and a senior central bank official told Reuters on Friday. A nuclear deal between world powers and Iran led to the removal of the curbs on Tehran's banking, insurance and shipping sectors last weekend, as well as restrictions on oil exports. "We have sent almost 40 SWIFTs to different banks around the world and we have requested that now that the sanctions are lifted, we would like to exchange documents and whether they will consider a correspondent banking relationship," said Parviz Aghili, chief executive and managing director of Tehran-based Middle East Bank.

Yemen war clouds raise dangers for top oil shipping route
Yahoo News - almost 2 years
By Jonathan Saul LONDON (Reuters) - Conflict in Yemen risks spilling out into the busy sea lanes that pass it and potentially disrupt the narrow Bab el-Mandeb passage through which nearly 4 million barrels of oil are shipped daily to Europe, the United States and Asia. Oil prices rose as much as 6 percent on Thursday after neighboring Saudi Arabia and its allies launched air strikes on Yemen that targeted Iran-backed Houthi rebels fighting to oust Yemen's president. "The collapse of Yemen as a political reality and the power of the Houthis will enable Iran to expand its presence on both sides of the Bab el-Mandeb, in the Gulf of Aden and in the Red Sea. Already discrete numbers of Iranian naval vessels regularly sail these waters," J. Peter Pham of U.S. think tank the Atlantic Council said.

Arctic ship route may be safer with Anglo-Russian radio waves
Yahoo News - over 3 years
By Jonathan Saul LONDON (Reuters) - The perils of the new Arctic shipping route, warmed by climate change, may diminish with a British-Russian radio navigation initiative, under development to shore up vulnerable satellite-based alternatives. The British system, being trialed in the hectic shipping lanes past Dover and drawing interest from South Korea - after its northern neighbor jammed satellite systems - may tie up with parallel work underway in Russia, its developers say. In September, a small Russian oil tanker was holed when it passed through the Kara Sea, off Russia's Arctic coastline. Vessels increasingly rely on systems that employ satellite signals to find a location or keep exact time, including the Global Positioning System (GPS).

MATCH #1: Two out of Three Falls Match – Bryan Danielson vs. Paul London, The Epic Encounter, 4.12.03 Danielson beat London at All Star Extravaganza and London got a win back at Night of the Butcher so this is the ultimate rubber match. They start with some back and forth chain wrestling. Both guys try to psyche each other out and the crowd is into it. This match is going to have big ramifications on the Top 5 Ranking System. I miss that. London continually uses a headlock and Danielson responds with strikes to work his way out of it. Danielson targets the midsection and uses the abdominal stretch in a variety of ways to wear London down. He gets the first near-fall of the match with a small package. Danielson also uses headbutts to great effect, and continues working over the midsection. The crowd is chanting for both men, alternating. Danielson knocks London to the floor and then suplexes him back in for ...

Not for subsidy to industry, give it to poor: Swraj Paul
My Digital FC - almost 5 years
London-based industrialist and founder of the Caparo Group Lord Swraj Paul today said he is against the industry receiving any government subsidy, which should instead be given to the poor and farmers. "I don't like subsidy of any kind to any industry. If you want to help the poor farmers, then (give) subsidy to only them. Most of them have been badly treated," Lord Paul said here. He was talking to reporters after the Euro 1.5 billion Caparo Group announced its diversification into the high-end mattresses business in a joint venture with UK-based Harrison Spinks and Wade Group. Lord Paul was responding to a query whether rising subsidies in India would be detrimental to the economic growth, putting additional burden on the exchequer. He said instead of talking only about "5 per cent, 1 per cent or 10 per cent of the society", the level of the poor-man should be raised.
