Maureen Ryan: Anna Gunn's 'Breaking Bad' Essay Didn't Go Far Enough
Huffington Post - over 3 years
I am glad Anna Gunn wrote this eloquent editorial about the hatred her "Breaking Bad" character has induced among some fans of the show. And I absolutely and unequivocally condemn the vitriol the actress has endured during the past few years. In my opinion, however, Gunn's piece doesn't go far enough. It would be inaccurate if the narrative surrounding Skyler implied that Walter White's wife was extremely interesting and nuanced from the start, and that she was every bit as compelling as the male characters on the show, but was rejected by a subset of fans simply because they couldn't handle a complex female character. That narrative would ignore the fact that the writers for "Breaking Bad" didn't write the character particularly well for a couple of seasons, at least. It's only in the last season or two that Skyler has truly become more than a home-front foil and a hindrance to her husband's ambitions. It's only in the last dozen or so episodes that I've start ...

The Hunger Games Gets Spoof The Starving Games
Movies Web - almost 5 years
Cinematic terrorists Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg, known for such classic film deconstruction visual essays as Meet the Spartans, Disaster Movie, Vampires Suck, and the upcoming The Biggest Movie of All Time 3D, are reuniting for yet another spoof of pop culture, this time taking aim at The Hunger Games. Called The Starving Games, the film will follow the same basic plot of this year's blockbuster while weaving in jokes about Marvel's The Avengers, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2. The main plot will revolve around a group of obese teenagers forced to eat to the death at a Las Vegas buffet by a government who feels fat kids are out of control. Of course, we will be greeted by characters like Fatniss Evereat and Pita Limon Meringue. Maybe Meat Loaf will make an appearance as himself. The film is set to go before cameras later this year, with rights being sold at the Cannes International Film Festival. The Hunger Ga ...

"Lionsgate, the cast, and filmmakers are all thrilled to have Francis Lawrence come on board as director of Catching Fire. Suzanne's brilliant book is the intense story of the birth of the rebellion and Katniss' emotionally charged journey as she takes on the mantle of the Mockingjay, and we all think F ...

The Hunger Games Gets Katniss Everdeen Barbie from Mattel
Movies Web - almost 5 years
With the success of The Hunger Games, it should comes as no surprise that this franchise is being spun off into the toy world, with Mattel creating the first doll from the series. That's right, Katniss Everdeen has been turned into a Barbie, complete with Jennifer Lawrence's likeness (sort of) and a bow and arrow accessory. Check out the first images of this doll, which find the literary character-turned-big screen action heroine as she appears in her Games survival gear. Bill Greening designed the doll, and had this to say about its creation. "I chose to dress her in the outfit she wears during the games, since this is where all the non-stop action takes place and is instantly recognizable by fans. Of course, she wears her mockingjay pin proudly on her lapel. Hopefully Hunger Games fans can appreciate the attention to detail. The doll's minimalistic style and details - such as her loosely braided hair and makeup-free look - also really embody the heroic character ...

Gary Ross Not Officially Out as Director of The Hunger Games Sequel Catching Fire
Movies Web - almost 5 years
A lot of drama has been stirred up in the past few days regarding both The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire and the X-Men: First Class Sequel. Yesterday, it was reported that Gary Ross had dropped out of directing Catching Fire, the sequel to the extremely popular The Hunger Games. First, in part due to the fact that Lionsgate wasn't going to give him the raise he asked for, and second, because he just isn't interested in the material. Anyone who read about The Hunger Games leading up to it's release may have been surprised to hear this news, as in interviews, Gary Ross has expressed his excitement about returning so quickly for a follow-up, especially in working once again with Jennifer Lawrence, whom he formed a unique bond with on set. According to Deadline, reports of Gary Ross dropping out of the sequel are premature. The director has not formally or officially withdrawn from participating in Catching Fire, and has been on vacation with his family, unable to speak f ...

The Hunger Games: Stimulate your mind
The Express Tribune Blogs - almost 5 years
If the best games stimulate the mind and the body, then The Hunger Games belongs near the top of the pile. Adapted from a novel bearing the same name by Suzanne Collins, this first installment in a trilogy is a superb dramatic action film, which engages the grey matter on various levels, thanks to its rich depth in characterisation, as well as a subtle multi-layered narrative. Set in a dystopian future in North America, things start with 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who feeds her little sister Primrose (Willow Shields), and her widowed mother (Paula Malcomson), ...
