Ball Ground Elementary Forms Chess Club
Canton- Sixes Patch - almost 5 years
The Ball Ground Elementary School Chess Club was founded this year by a diverse group of fourth- and fifth-graders under the leadership of Ball Ground ES teacher Joe McDonough.  While some of the members previously had played chess, the club was the first exposure to the game for many of the students.  Club members have achieved nearly 100-percent attendance for their events, and playing the game has improved their confidence in math class, according to some members.  The club recently played a game of human chess on the playground.  Thirty-two members and their supporters acted as chess pieces while fourth-grader Abbie Smith and fifth-grader Perry Rocafort “moved” them across the board.  After a long and competitive battle, Abby’s team was able to checkmate Perry’s king.
