A Quintessential Springsteen Guide
The Caldewells Patch - over 4 years
Westfield resident John D. Luerssen grew up listening to the music of Bruce Springsteen, getting his initial introduction on Tremont Avenue courtesy of a friend's older brother. Today, Luerssen, a PSE&G supervisor in Cranford by day, music critic and author by night, releases the paperback Bruce Springsteen FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the Boss, his second foray into the FAQ series. With a list price of $22.99, the book, at 400 pages, takes readers on the journey of a Jersey boy with a guitar and a dream who rose to stardom, gracing the covers of Time and Newsweek simultaneously, yet never forgot his roots. Luerseen, who played in a band during his years at Westfield High School, explained that after having written several cover stories for American Songwriter, including an interview with The Killers, he was contacted by Robert Rodriguez, author of the first in the FAQ series, about writing for a book. "I had written a book about Weezer several years before that a ...

Spaulding Roundup: Utah Week News and Notes
Bruins Nation - over 4 years
News and notes from UCLA football practice for the Utah game week as the Bruins attempt to recover from the debacle at Cal. That was an ugly game last Saturday in Berkeley. N has already written on the in-person experience that we shared at Memorial Stadium, and others have written their post-mortems. While the team and coaches cannot downplay or forget what happened last week, they now must shift focus to this week's game against Utah. Coach Mora met with the media as usual after this morning's practice, talking about having the defense work more on 'swarming' the football. We kinda changed the way we practiced a little bit in terms of reps. Just trying to get an emphasis on swarming the football defensively. It was a little more physical today but it wasn't by design. I think it showed they're serious and focus about rebounding from a loss. He also talked about the offensive line - particularly Jake Brendel as freshman in the middle plus the communication a ...

UCLA Football Players Sign Petition
Bruins Nation - almost 5 years
UCLA Football Players Sign Petition The timing of this is interesting. From the LA Times blog post: "More than 70 players with the UCLA Bruins football team have signed a petition supporting a [...] measure that would require universities that don’t renew a student’s athletic scholarship to provide equivalent financial assistance so the student can stay in school and get a degree" Juxtapose this story with ESPN’s Peter Yoon’s story a few hours later: UCLA must cut seven scholarships This interests me because you can imagine State Senator Padilla or Andy Staples from SI.com finding our situation as a convenient target.

Peter Yoon on Shabazz
Bruins Nation - almost 5 years
Peter Yoon on Shabazz With Muhammad, Anderson and Adams joining that group and Parker potentially also coming, UCLA fans will be looking for a Pac-12 title and a run to the Sweet 16 or deeper come NCAA tournament time. That kind of pressure is just fine with Howland, who suffered an entirely different kind of pressure this past season. "It’s exciting to have these kind of expectations," Howland said. "They are real, but we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. You have to earn everything that you get. There is nothing that is going to substitute for hard work, discipline, sacrifice for one another and most importantly, playing as a team."

In 2008, Pete Yorn recorded and released a new song, entitled "American Blues Vol. 1."
More Details Hide Details A music video was shot for the single, and the song itself was released for free on Yorn's official website for a short period of time. Concerning the song, Yorn has said "I wrote American Blues Vol. 1. on the 4th of July after reading the morning paper. It's unlike any song I've ever written. I was moved by how much negativity I was reading about and how even groups were boycotting Independence Day because they were so disgusted with the state of our Nation. I was hoping things would improve they obviously haven't yet but I know they will in time."
  • 2006
    Age 31
In September 2006, in an interview with silentuproar.com, Yorn elaborated on his true intentions behind the trilogy, remarking that it was at least partially a conscious trilogy but wasn't meant to be taken too seriously: "I didn't mean like a Star Wars trilogy where it's one story at all."
More Details Hide Details Yorn expressed that the "trilogy" was more of a diary of sorts; a person gaining new life experiences and simply commenting on them in linear order. "So it's a sort of continuing analysis of those topics, and the Nightcrawler LP would represent a later phase," Yorn said.
In 2006, Yorn released his third album, Nightcrawler and toured extensively in support of it.
More Details Hide Details He preceded every show with an instore acoustic appearance at an indie record shop in the town he was passing through. Nightcrawler was named one of the top 20 records of 2006 by Paste magazine. Guitarist Peter Buck of the band R.E.M. has made appearances on several Pete Yorn recordings, including instrumentation on the single version of "Strange Condition" and a number of songs from the Day I Forgot LP.
