Aspects of Minimalism at Guild Hall: Dan Flavin's Neons and More
The Huffington Post - 6 months
For Guild Hall curator Christina Strassfield, a show on minimalism was a no brainer. Currently on view in two large galleries, stark works in sand colors, geometrics, in brown felt material, in bright neon, the exhibition displays art from the collection of Bridgehampton resident Leonard Ruggio, whose passion is minimalism, a midcentury movement that challenges our notions of the types of materials can be used in art, and in fact our traditional notions of beauty. Minimalism contrasts with the extravagant collages of the previous show featuring the photography of Peter Beard, and was historically a contrast to Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art, begging the question, is less more? The Guild Hall show coincides with the current trend toward minimalism as a life choice, that is, in the parlance of the latest trends in austerity, a term for stripping away of possessions, freeing one self of objects. In a way, in art, you notice the lack of subjectivity, decoration, the absence of the huma ...

A Friendship Between Two 1960s Photographers Highlights Art's Power To Spark Change
Huffington Post - about 1 year
In the early 1960s, Gordon Parks was working as an editorial magazine photographer for Life magazine. By this point, the influential artist from Kansas had already captured his iconic "American Gothic" portrait -- a recreation of the well-known Grant Wood painting -- which he produced during his tenure with the Farm Security Administration. He'd published his powerful "Harlem Gang Leader" photo essay for Life and snapped images of beloved figures like Eartha Kitt, Sidney Poitier and Duke Ellington. He was on his way to working with the likes of Muhammed Ali, even directing that unforgettable film "Shaft." Peter Beard, a native New Yorker younger than Parks, was an art student at Yale in 1960, learning from Josef Albers and dabbling in projects for Diana Vreeland at Vogue. He'd made trips to the African continent already, but was a few years away from documenting the tragic demise of 35,000 elephants and other animals in Kenya, the subjects of his first book, The End of the Game. Jonas Mekas: the man who inspired Andy Warhol to make films
Guardian (UK) - about 4 years
Jonas Mekas, 'the godfather of avant-garde cinema', talks to Sean O'Hagan about working with Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali and Jackie Kennedy Jonas Mekas, who will be 90 on Christmas Eve, has an intense memory of sitting on his father's bed, aged six, singing a strange little song about daily life in the village in which he grew up in Lithuania. "It was late in the evening and suddenly I was recounting everything I had seen on the farm that day. It was a very simple, very realistic recitation of small, everyday events. Nothing was invented. I remember the reception from my mother and father, which was very good. But I also remember the feeling of intensity I experienced just from describing the actual details of what my father did every day. I have been trying to find that intensity in my work ever since." We are sitting at a table in the small kitchen area of Mekas's expansive studio in Brooklyn beneath a fading photograph of Arthur Rimbaud, one of his abiding inspirations. Around us ...

Kirsten Chilstrom: Rebuttal: Montauk's Hipster Fatigue
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Montauk's Surf Lodge, photographed by Kirsten Chilstrom The New York Times declared it: "Montauk Feels the Effects of Too Many Hipsters." It was a bold statement, in Jim Rutenberg's Style Section article, titled "Montauk's Hipster Fatigue," which went live on August 3. In his piece, Rutenberg begins by discussing a sign, seen throughout Montauk, of a fedora with a slash through it. Below it, the observer finds the ominous caption, "Save Montauk." The hat, Rutenberg says, "represents your basic hipster." He goes on to describe a hipster as someone with "artisanal tattoos; a bespoke, frontiersman beard; and, yes, a fedora perched atop the head." These superficial qualities are accompanied, he continues, by an attitude of "I'm richer than you, I'm hipper than you and, gosh darn it, some things are going to change around here." This past Saturday, I hopped into a friend's car and headed east to see for myself if East Hampton's rural eastern neighbor really had been invaded ...

Beard attended Yale University where he enrolled as a pre-medical student but quickly changed his major to art history. His first exhibition was at the Blum Helman Gallery in 1975.
More Details Hide Details This switch to Art is not surprising considering the interest in art his family has had, for generations, both as artists and patrons of the arts. Later, after meeting Blixen in Denmark http://www.peterbeard.com/bio.htm), he purchased a farm in Africa. This piece of land was adjacent to her Karen farm in Kenya, and to Giraffe Manor at the foot of the Ngong Hills — a property which he named "Hog Ranch".

  • 1955
    Age 17
Beard read Karen Blixen's Out of Africa, which inspired him to travel to Africa in 1955.
More Details Hide Details He took many pictures of the wildlife there and began putting them into collages and using animal blood and remains along with clippings to create his work. In these works, he documents the history of his relationships with (among other things): Africa, Karen Blixen, the New York art scene, the fashion world, Hollywood, and the Kennedy administration. Page after page is covered with photographs of women, transcribed telephone messages, marginalia in India ink, clippings from the daily newspapers, dried leaves and insects, old sepia-toned photographs, drawings of animals and people by Kikuyu artists, quotes by Joseph Conrad, found objects, images of decaying elephant carcasses, and sometimes, Beard’s own blood.
