Jamaica to use EU funds for PROMAC project
Antigua Observer - over 3 years
KINGSTON, Jamaica– Jamaica says a grant of Euros 22 million (One Euro = US$1.29 cents) from the European Union will help it achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) relating to the reduction of maternal and child mortality.  The EU funds will be used to implement the Programme for the Reduction of Maternal and Child Mortality (PROMAC) that the government said represents the introduction of a new critical care service for mothers and newborn babies in the public health sector in Jamaica.  “This fits within the general pattern of support from the European Union… (These funds) will assist us in meeting our MDGs in respect of maternal and child mortality,” Finance Minister Dr. Peter Phillips said at the signing ceremony. Director for Latin America and the Caribbean in the EU’s Development Co-operation Office, Jolita Butkeviciene, said while major strides had been made in fighting HIV, tuberculosis and malaria, “we still haven’t arrived where we would like to be in tackling mot ...

Jamaica accepting proposals to develop casinos
Fox News - over 3 years
Jamaica is accepting proposals to develop casinos on the island for the first time as it looks to boost its tourism industry. The finance ministry announced Tuesday that investors have until Sept. 30 to deliver their plans. The review period for applications is expected to last four months after that. Under an act passed by Jamaica's legislature last year, developers can build casinos that offer traditional table games and slot machines. Currently, Jamaica has just a few facilities in the capital of Kingston and popular tourist areas where people can play gaming machines. Finance Minister Peter Phillips believes offering casinos under the new regulations is how Jamaica will expand its hotel sector. Religious groups on the island have long worried that casinos will lead to more social problems.

Jamaica prepares for Tropical Storm Sandy
Fox News - over 4 years
Jamaicans stocked up on supplies and reinforced roofs on Tuesday ahead of the arrival of Tropical Storm Sandy, which is expected to hit the Caribbean island of posh resorts and sprawling shantytowns as a hurricane with lashing rain and wind. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the strengthening storm was churning over warm Caribbean waters and should reach Jamaica on Wednesday, most likely as a Category 1 hurricane. The late-season storm is expected to travel from south to north over the island, which local meteorologists say hasn't sustained a direct hit from a hurricane's eye since powerful Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. Acting Prime Minister Peter Phillips said "all Jamaicans must take the threat of this storm seriously" and asked people to look out for their neighbors, especially children, the elderly and the disabled. Hurricane conditions were possible in eastern Cuba by Wednesday night. The storm is forecast to pass near th ...

Government to deliver ‘late’ budget as Parliament opens
Antigua Observer - almost 5 years
KINGSTON, May 10, CMC – Two months behind schedule, the Portia Simpson administration is to deliver its first budget and outline a legislative agenda on Thursday during the State Opening of Parliament at Gordon House, the seat of the national legislature in the heart of the capital.   Governor General Sir Patrick Allen is to deliver the Throne Speech in which he will outline the government’s programmes and policies for the 2012-2013 fiscal year, which began on April 1. The parliamentary set piece was delayed this year to make way for the government’s on-going negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In its fifth month in office after winning the December 29 elections, the administration is also expected to unveil the 2012-2013 Budget. Observers say the government is expected to call on Jamaicans to brace for further spending cuts. A slash in capital spending is being forecast as the administration tightens its grip on the country’s coffers after failing to mee ...

Shame on Sonoma State
Counter Punch - almost 5 years
Retired Citigroup CEO Sanford Weill will receive an honorary doctorate, as will his wife Joan, from Sonoma State University in Northern California on May 12. Some SSU students, faculty, staff, and alumni are upset by this degree, describing it as “dishonorable.” As someone who has taught at SSU for the last four years, this reporter has been interviewing members of our academic community about this matter. They have a website to express their complaints: http://ShameOnSSU.org. Three articles on this matter appear in this week’s campus newspaper (www.sonomastatestar.com). Weill was CEO of Citigroup, the largest of the “too-big-to-fail” banks bailed out by taxpayers. Last year he gave $12 million for SSU’s new Green Music Center (GMC). At issue are how Weill got that money and what strings were attached to his passing it on to SSU. A major purveyor of toxic mortgages, Citigroup required $45 billion in government investment and a $300 billion guarantee of its bad assets to avoid ban ...

Day of Shame on Sonoma State University
Dissident Voice - almost 5 years
A recently organized coalition of Sonoma State faculty, students and local Occupy activists is calling for a public demonstration of outrage in response to the announcement that former Citigroup CEO Sanford Weill will receive an honorary degree at SSU’s graduation ceremony this year. People all over the country are invited to the Sonoma State campus for a Day of Shame on Sonoma State University. The protest begins at noon on Saturday, May 12, and does not intend in any way to disrupt graduation proceedings. On the contrary, this is an urgent call to defend the integrity of the ceremony and denounce the unacceptable insult that Mr. Weill’s dishonorable doctorate degree represents. Sanford (Sandy) Weill was the driving force in shattering the Glass-Steagall Act, which for decades had prohibited Wall Street investment firms from gambling with their depositors’ money. Its reversal opened the gates for the housing crisis in 2008, the plague of foreclosures devastating our communities and ...
