‘Mad Men’: A belated appreciation
Democrat Herald - almost 5 years
SHE GOES WITH ME TO A BLOSSOM WORLD: Jane (Peyton List) and Roger Sterling (John Slattery) prepare for mind-expansion. (Jordin Althaus/AMC) “They say I’ve got brains, but they ain’t doin’ me no good.” The Beach Boys’ “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times” was probably too on the button as an anthem for Roger Sterling’s (John Slattery) first acid trip, as “Mad Men’s” senior account man took stock of his place in a decade that mystified him, but damn, it hit the spot. It was an odd proclamation for the man who cowrote, produced and sang the song. In 1966, Brian Wilson stood at the pinnacle of his creative powers (if not entirely his faculties), so far ahead of the curve that he forced The Beatles into “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” just to stay apace. Even if that were his sole achievement, provoking the likes of “A Day in the Life” from the Lennon/McCartney machine, his maker would greet him in grateful embrace. Would Roger Sterling have heard the “Pet Sounds” LP on his ...

'Mad Men' recap: Straight trippin'
LATimes - almost 5 years
A correction has been added to this post. See below for details. “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner is not, as a rule, the kind of guy who caters to the desires of his audience; if anything, he aggressively flouts their expectations. But in “Far Away Places,” he delivers a moment millions of “Mad Men” fans have been waiting for: The show’s first acid trip. Part of the distinct pleasure of “Mad Men” is watching the age of Camelot give way to the age of Aquarius, and the question of when, or indeed whether, anyone from the show would dabble in LSD has intrigued fans for a while now. Those of you who predicted that Roger Sterling would be the first to “turn on, tune in, drop out” now have official bragging rights. Roger’s mind-expanding (and marriage-ending) experience arrives in the middle of the most unsettling episode yet this season – which is saying a lot, given just how sinister “Mad Men” has gotten this time around. The episode begins with Peggy, who, rattled after a fight with ...
