No. 3 Louisville opens title defense with easy win
Seattle Pi - over 3 years
(AP) — The emotion of raising a national championship banner combined with replacing two key players from the team that won the title had No. 3 Louisville in a close game for 33 minutes against the College of Charleston on Saturday. The Cardinals outscored Charleston 22-3 over the final 6:41 to pull away to a 70-48 victory in the first game of its national championship defense. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski saw it when Louisville shook off the grief of losing teammate Kevin Ware to a broken leg and ripped off a 13-2 second-half run that pushed the Cardinals to the Final Four. Freshman Mangok Mathiang added seven points and 10 rebounds in his collegiate debut. Smith's new backcourtmate Chris Jones, last season's national junior college player of the year, charged with replacing four-year starter Peyton Siva, added 12 points and five assists. Ware, whose poise last season after his gruesome compound leg fracture turned him into Louisville's rallying point and the NCAA tournament's m ...

2013 College Basketball Preview: Top 11 Seniors
Huffington Post Sports - over 3 years
The college basketball senior is a rare breed these days; last season alone, 47 underclassmen defected for the NBA. Yet despite the monstrous attention and expectations surrounding super-freshmen like Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker, there remains -- and always will remain -- a need for the senior. Call it leadership, call it experience, call it whatever you want, seniors bring toughness and they know how to win. Last year's list of top seniors included Peyton Siva, C.J. McCollum and Mason Plumlee. With the college hoops season upon us, let's take a look this year's 11 best. For more college hoops 2013, check out my top mid-majors and best batch of returning players. 2013 College Basketball Preview: Andrew Wiggins, Freshmen Galore And The Big Least
Huffington Post Sports - over 3 years
Kansas' rising freshman Andrew Wiggins is among college basketball's all-time most hyped players. But the 18-year-old Canadian is hardly the only freshman to watch for this season. Kentucky boasts a splendid quartet of baby-faced assassins, Duke has the consensus best U.S. player in Chicago product Jabari Parker, and the list goes on: Fantastic Freshmen Wiggins, Parker, Aaron Gordon, Julius Randle, the Harrison brothers -- 2013 has an overabundance of talented freshmen. Wiggins is the consensus top pick for the 2014 draft and has gotten most of the hype, billed as the next LeBron James. Gordon is headed to Arizona, where he should be a matchup nightmare with his ability to score from anywhere. Parker has a basketball acumen that most pros don't have, as well as sound fundamentals that will allow him to fit in perfectly at Duke. Randle is a 6-foot-9 inside-outside forward who can overpower smaller players and outpace other bigs. He is sensational in transition and could wind up being ...

Derrick Rose Says He's 'More Explosive' After Chicago Return And Peyton Siva Won't Argue (VIDEOS)
Huffington Post - over 3 years
For the first time since April 28, 2012, Derrick Rose was back in action at the United Center in Chicago. He surprised himself -- and perhaps Detroit Pistons rookie Peyton Siva -- with his performance. "I surprised myself some, going to the lane, getting guys on their heels and really playing through contact," Rose said after the Bulls' 96-81 preseason win over the Pistons, via the Chicago Tribune. "Even though I'm getting hit, I'm finding ways to get through it." The Chicago Bulls have been without Rose since he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee late in a win over the Philadelphia 76ers in the opener of their first round series in the 2012 NBA Playoffs. At long last, he made his long-awaited return in the Bulls' preseason game against the visiting Pistons on Wednesday night. This was just his third 2013 preseason performance and his first home appearance. In 22 minutes, Rose shot 6 for 9 from the field for 22 points while grabbing two rebounds and dishing out a pair of assis ...

Paying NCAA Athletes: Stop Ignoring The 99%
Huffington Post Sports - over 3 years
This week, I walked 25 minutes from the center of Northeastern University's campus in Boston to the school's multi-purpose field in Brookline to watch the men's soccer team take on the Fordham Rams. I'm tag-teaming the soccer beat with another college kid for the school's independent student newspaper, The Huntington News. After I climbed up the flight of aluminum bleacher stairs to the field's press box, settled into my seat and plugged the tangled yellow Ethernet cord into my laptop, I took a moment to breath in the beautiful autumn afternoon. Then a sharp glare struck me out of the brief moment of reflection, a blaze that was bouncing off the vacant bleachers from the sun and directly into my eyes. According to the school's athletics website, the attendance at the match was a whopping 187. Bullshit. Aside from a few of the Huskies players' families and a few students who schlepped to the field -- spectators who all viewed the game free of charge -- nobody was attending th ...

Chasing the Ten Day Contract: Myck Kabongo and the NBA Dream
Burnt Orange Nation - over 3 years
On the final night of the 2012-2013 NBA season the New York Knicks, beset with injuries, were playing with a short bench. Mike Woodson's team was hobbling out of the season, hoping to make it to the playoffs alive. But Chris Copeland was not hobbling; Chris Copeland was living the dream. With six and a half minutes remaining, Copeland put the ball on the deck, drove the basket, and put the cap on a remarkable week. With that layup Copeland scored his 32nd and 33rd points of the night, surpassing his NBA career high score of 32 points, established two days earlier. Copeland was a 29-year-old NBA rookie, finally putting up numbers in the league after spending five seasons playing all over Europe. (You can read more about Chris Copeland's journey in this excellent SBNation piece.) The NBA draft divides the haves and have nots With the 56th pick in the 2013 NBA draft, the Detroit Pistons selected Peyton Siva of the University of Louisville. Not Myck Kabongo of The Un ...

NBA Draft Grades: Anthony Bennett Chosen First, Nerlens Noel Slides And Trades Galore
Huffington Post - over 3 years
The NBA Draft has come and gone ... just not necessarily the way we had envisioned it taking place. It was a shock to many that Anthony Bennett was drawn first by Cleveland -- the first-Canadian born player ever to be taken in that slot. While Bennett is certainly an intriguing prospect, the selection was the byproduct of a draft sorely lacking star power. Ironically, Thursday's pick was David Stern's last draft as commissioner. Stern -- who will step down Feb. 1 after three decades on the job -- has built this league up with electric stars, starting with Michael Jordan in the mid-80s and ending with LeBron James today. Nerlens Noel, whom many had tabbed as the likely top selection, fell to the sixth pick, while Boston Celtics' stalwarts Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett were dealt to Brooklyn. Making matters even stranger was the fact that rising star Jrue Holiday was traded from Philadelphia to New Orleans and will now team up with Anthony Davis on that team. Still, this part ...

Louisville Coach Eyes Kentucky Derby Victory
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Rick Pitino became a Hall of Famer and an NCAA champion on the same day. Now the Louisville basketball coach is positioned to become a Kentucky Derby-winning owner if Goldencents wins on Saturday. Talk about the greatest four weeks ever. Despite attempts to downplay his hot streak, Pitino's appearance for Wednesday's workout at Churchill Downs showed how much people like being around a winner. He looked every bit the rock star wearing sunglasses as he walked through a throng of Cardinals and race fans who had waited patiently outside the barn. And to think, Pitino owns just 5 percent of the horse that is a 5-1 choice to win the Derby from the No. 8 post. But given his current roll, it's hard to bet against him. "Obviously, we're rooting for Goldencents, but the Derby is something that you never know" how it will evolve, Pitino said. "If we don't win it, I'd like to see someone like (trainer) ...

Huffington Post Sports - almost 4 years
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Russ Smith is staying at Louisville to chase another NCAA championship and a degree. The 6-foot-1 guard is passing on the NBA draft to return for his senior season, aiming to become his family's first college graduate and also win another title. Smith's decision contradicts father Russ Sr.'s declaration after the Cardinals' NCAA championship win over Michigan that his son would enter the draft. Smith led Louisville (35-5) with 18.7 points per game this season, including 22.3 in the NCAA tournament. After talking with coach Rick Pitino about his pro prospects, Smith decided Wednesday that his game needed more development. He was an all-Big East Conference first team selection along with 6-10 teammate Gorgui Dieng, who has entered his name in the draft pool. "I'm happy I finally got it off my chest," Smith said of his decision. "What was crazy after doing all the pros and cons of staying or going, the pros of staying were so much better than ...

Peyton Siva Gets Twitter Shamed By Escort
Huffington Post Sports - almost 4 years
Peyton Siva may have led the Louisville Cardinals to victory in the NCAA championship this week, but the college basketball star recently took a bit of a beating in his personal life -- at the hands of Jenna Shea, a notorious showgirl and escort with a sizable Twitter following. Shea, who has previously been linked to James Harden, Lil Wayne and other famous names, took to Twitter after Louisville's victory on Monday to reveal a steamy "sexting" exchange she and Siva allegedly had engaged in over the past few days. Shea's big reveal came in the wake of Siva's public declaration of gratitude to his girlfriend and Jesus during a post-game interview. Screenshots Shea uploaded to Instagram and shared on Twitter show what appear to be flirtatious (and, at times, NSFW) text messages sent to her by the Big East Tournament MVP. In some of the messages, Siva even asks Shea to visit him. (Story continues below.) (Credit: Instagram/jennasheapix) Shea received some backlash ...

Is Trey Burke Heading To The NBA?
Huffington Post Sports - almost 4 years
ATLANTA (AP) — With a national championship slipping away in the final minutes, Trey Burke raced back on defense and gave Michigan fans one more spectacular play to remember. The 6-foot point guard hustled to the basket and leaped high in the air to block Peyton Siva on a Louisville fast break. There was only one problem: Burke was called for a foul. No matter what the Wolverines and their best player did on this night, it wasn't quite enough. Burke scored 24 points in what may have been his final college game, and backup Spike Albrecht added 17 in the first half Monday night, but Michigan couldn't hold off the Cardinals, who wore the Wolverines down in the second half and took the national championship with an 82-76 victory. "I've had a lot of really good teams over the years, and some emotional locker rooms, and that was the most emotional we've ever had," Michigan coach John Beilein said. "We feel bad about it. ...
