Nina Kotick: Geena Davis On The Film That Changed Her Life's Work
The Huffington Post - over 4 years
If you think Hollywood stereotypes women in film, you're right -- and Geena Davis has the numbers to prove it. Six years ago the Oscar-winning actress and Mensa member founded The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. Her non-profit commissioned the largest research project on gender in film and television ever undertaken, conducted by the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. In family films, there is only one female character for every three male characters; and in group scenes, only 17 percent of the characters are female, researchers found. Davis noticed the disparity when watching movies and television with her young daughter. Today her foundation challenges film and television creators to reduce gender stereotyping and create a wide variety of female characters for entertainment targeting young children. Davis also currently serves on the Board of the White House Project, is the Chair of the California Commission on the Status of Women, and is ...

Chris Colfer Debuts New Film At Tribeca Film Festival
The Guestlist - almost 5 years
"I'm a masochist." So said Chris Colfer to laughs following the world premiere of "Struck by Lightning" at the Tribeca Film Festival. He must be. Colfer makes both his screenwriting and feature-film acting debut in the coming-of-age film, which begins with his character getting killed by a lightning strike. Best known for his Golden Globe-winning performance on "Glee," Colfer was on the receiving end of numerous cheers and yelps from the excited audience at Tribeca on Saturday night. One young girl asked him for an autograph during the Q&A ("Follow-up question: Do you think you can sign this?") and "Glee" co-stars Amber Riley and Ashley Fink were in also attendance. (Emma Watson was too, and she asked a question of one of the producers, to which Colfer replied, "You look so familiar!") Directed by Brian Dannelly ("Saved!"), "Lightning" flashes back after its shocking start to the life of Carson (Colfer), a high school outcast who dreams of getting into Northweste ...
